There are many traits possessed by those called heroes. Whether it is in real life or in fiction, in the past, present, and future every hero desires these character: traits intelligence, bravery, and honesty. “Montag picked a single small volume from the floor. The novel Legend by Mari Lu stands out from others. Mari Lu uses a protagonist and antagonist to add a conflict in her novel. Doing this shows that “narratives contain a primary protagonist, who is the focus of the narration. In contrast, antagonists are usually portrayed in a negative fashion, and thus, viewers may feel a sense of counter empathy toward them”(Magliano 1). The antagonist should be at least the equal in strength of the protagonist, and preferably stronger.

A hero is typically defined as a character that exhibits distinguishing courage or bravery, one that is admired for their noble qualities. In principle, a hero’s role is to fulfill a gallant journey, which will continuously test their noble qualities. Interests in heroes extend across dividing lines of age, gender, and ethnicity.

A broad range of literature depicts the lead protagonist as an honorable, selfless and courageous character, despite difficulties, bound to succeed in what they pursue. These common traits define the archetypeyl hero. However these characters contain no flaws and nothing representing the 'human condition' therefore appearing alien like towards their audience . The Anti-hero contains heroic morals, but is plagued with flaws that often lead to the characters downfall. They are considered highly relate-able and appealing towards their audience due to the features of the ‘human condition’.

Everyday people all over are dealing with conflicts and their so called enemies. An instance where I dealt with a conflict is when the swimmers at prospect high school were judging me based on my speed. They created their opinions with out meeting me or finding out who I was. This was a conflict I had to deal with and many of the girl who were judgmental became my enemies. This is a topic that affects many, not only fictional characters in a book.

In almost every book and movie there is a protagonist and an antagonist. Without these two characters doing their part, there would be no conflict and fun in the movie or story. In the movie Despicable Me the protagonist would be Gru, the antagonist would be Vector. In a book like Harry Potter the protagonist would be Harry and the antagonist would be Voldemort. There are many other books and movies that include a protagonist and an antagonist.

The role of antagonists in preceding and contemporary literature has always been illustrated as a negative and opposing force in a story. Hence the term “antagonist,” which was derived from the Greek word “antagonistēs” meaning rival or competitor (LiteraryDevices Editors). However, the role of an antagonist is just as essential as the role of the protagonist. The antagonist, who can also be called a “villain,” plays a driving force in a story to persuade the protagonist, also known as the “hero,” to reach the ultimate ending. An ultimate ending can be the “happily ever after” ending in fairytales or fulfilling a mission in tales of quests.

Preamble: In all pieces of literature, there are many different types of characters, in which there are variations between these types. Characters like the hero, villain, anti-hero, and victim play an integral role in the expression of the author’s ideas within the novel. The hero, however, is deemed to be the character who is the protector and enforcer of what is good and just. Despite this, a hero is not immaculate, as his/her decisions can reveal certain flaws.
