It was called gilded Age for the same reason that it was only lined with gold. The age, in reality, was corrupt. Emma Goldman rightly unleashed the lack of freedom as she stated that the democracy that her people are subjected to is only enslavement in new forms. The workers are slaves who are exploited and so are the military men fighting wars for their country (qtd. Zinn, 372)

The Gilded Age, a forty-eight year period at the end of the nineteenth century, was described as a time that has a rotten core covered with gold paint by Mark Twain. During that era, after the Civil War, the nation had been filled with unscrupulous businessmen and massive corruptions. Similar to the situation in the Gilded Age, the wealth gap in today is enormous and hence causing people to call it the second Gilded Age. Although society in the U.S. is different nowadays, the economic and political situation from these two time periods share many similarities. Gilded Age is an era where economy grew astonishingly.

A changing culture from the late 1870’s through 1900 became known as the Gilded Age. The Gilded Age was first used by Mark Twain in his book known as “The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today”. The Gilded Age is known as a time where corruption and bad living conditions occurred on the inside of the area, but on the outside everything seemed strong and powerful, especially to other immigrants. A lot of people migrated from other countries to become part of what they thought was a perfect society, but when they arrived they realized how terrible everyone was treated and how bad the government ran.

The gilded age was a hot mess, but what age of reform wasn't? Gilded means ‘not as it seems’. We had progressives uncovering horrific truths left and right. The progressives were fighting hard for solutions to the problems than were caused by rapid industry growth, Political corruption and urban growth. More specifically crime, poverty, and discrimination in the workplace.

The period of time following the Civil War were a time for changes in the United States, both socially and economically. Historically, the Gilded Age refers to the events that occurred during the year 1865 until the year 1900. It is the time frame that is categorized by political corruption and mishandling of corporate finances. It is also the time frame categorized by the rapid increase in the population and economy and industrialization.

The end of the reconstruction era gave rise to the gilded age. The gilded age was a time of economic growth. It was the second industrial revolution, urbanization, immigration and political/economic corruption. The congress and the big business were more influential than the presidency. The term ‘Gilded Age’ was termed by Mark Twain who described the wealthy who were covered in a ‘layer of gold’, a superficial layer can be peeled and reveals unpleasant things.

After the Reconstruction of America, we entered into a time referred to as “The Gilded Age”. In this time period, there were a few monumental companies that tried to be the one and only of their type, a few examples would be the US Steel Co., and the Standard Oil Co. These companies were rising up and trying to completely eliminate all other companies that would compete against them, and ultimately, have a monopoly on the product or service. At the time, this wasn’t illegal, but people who were trying to rival these grandiose companies were enraged. Therefore, they started calling them “Robber Barons” referring to the old ranks of nobility, where a baron was an owner of a large segment of land.

The Gilded Age was a time where the rich continued getting richer, and the poor poorer. Along with these economic effects came the second industrial revolution. The population in cities grew, and all throughout the country, factories which had production and manufacturing capabilities that could not even be imagined decades ago sprung up. The population of America was greatly effected by this industrialization, especially farmers and the industrial workers themselves. The farmers experienced a populism movement, while industrial workers created unions to protect their rights, and reform civil service.

The Gilded Age was a time in America from around the 1870’s to about 1900. It is regarded as this due to it’s known mediocrity from a political standpoint. Known for a major economic crisis, inequality between men and women, and the awful segregation put forth by the Jim Crow Laws. Referring to this stage in the life of America as the Gilded Age, it was more disappointing than anything else. It displayed how the country seemed perfect at the surface, but deep down, the country was an atrocity full of corruption.

The period after Reconstruction, the last few years of the nineteenth century, was known as the “Gilded Age”. The “Gilded Age” was named by Mark Twain in 1873 and was a period of transformation in the economy, government, technology, and social customs of the U.S. The transformation lead to a more modern society which was once small regional communities. Congress continued to reform the west which meant redistributing land that was owned by Indians. This caused great conflict that involved many wars.

Politically, economically and socially the Gilded Age was truly a “Gilded Age”. Noteverything added to the “Gilded” effect of the time period. The Gilded Age lasted from 1870 to World War 1, “1900s.” The Gilded Age was a period of fast economic development, but also much social struggle. Mark Twain in the late nineteenth century founded the “Gilded” Age, which means covered with gold on the outside, but not really golden on the inside, for example, tin. This period of time was glittering on the surface but corrupt underneath. In other words, the outside looked beautiful, but the inside looked old and trashy.

The Gilded age was a period in the late 1800s (1865-1900) that showed tremendous increase of wealth caused by the industrial age. The lifestyle of the rich during this period hid the many problems of the time that eventually brought about the progressive era movement. This was a movement for reform between 1900-1920s. Progressives typically held that the irresponsible actions of the rich were corrupting both public and private life. Forces such as immigration, the Populist Party and industrialization that led to the progressive era also impacted the American government both in its activeness and its democracy.
