Ghosts In A Christmas Carol

Ebenezer Scrooge’s character greatly varies from the beginning to the end of “A Christmas Carol”. When readers first meet the main character, Scrooge, they get the impression that he solely has a heart of coal. By the middle of the story, he was summoned by the spirits of Christmas past, present and future to show him how the rest of the towns’ people view him. Finally, in the end, Scrooge came to the realization that there needs to be a powerful change in his pitiful Christmas spirit creating a whole new man within him. Throughout the play, Ebenezer’s character flourished, but he began as a cruel, irascible old man.

In Charles Dickens's famous novel, A. Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is visited be three spirits, to show him his life then, now, and later. At the end of the story, he is visited from the ghost of Christmas Yet To Come, and the ghost has took Ebenezer into the future to a view of his own gravestone. When Ebenezer has gotten to his gravestone he says, "Men's courses will foreshadow certain ends, to which, if persevered in, they must lead. But if the courses be departed from, the ends will change. Say it is thus with what you show me."

After being so frank with Scrooge, the ghost took him where the miners live. An old man was singing a christmas song from when Scrooge was a boy, putting Scrooge in a good mood. “So surely as they raised their voices, the old man got quite blithe and loud, and so surely as they stopped, his vigour sank again. ”(St.3, 14). After showing Scrooge the miners, The Ghost Of Christmas Present introduced Scrooge to two children.

The ghosts show him things from his past, present, and future that help him become a kind and generous person at the end of the story.

In the novel A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is a grump, grouchy, old man who didn’t accept Christmas to be celebrated. According to Scrooge, Christmas was a Humbug. He is visited by three ghosts from his past, present, and Christmas yet to come. They will show Scrooge the things that happened, were happening, and were to come, so maybe he will change his ways. If Scrooge doesn’t hurry and do something now he will be haunted , and eventually turn into one of the ghosts.

In the play A Christmas Carol Mr scrooge is visited by jacob marley, his old but dead partner. He tells scrooge to get his act up or he will turn out to be like him. He marley told he would be visited by three ghost.(Dickens 8) When the clock strikes he is visited by the ghost of christmas past he shows scrooge his past from when he was a little boy to when he was an apprentice at a warehouse. The ghost of Christmas past influenced Scrooge because it showed him that money doesn’t matter. The ghost showed Scrooge with Belle and Scrooge realized what he missed out on. Scrooge and Belle were not together anymore because he cared more about his wealth than her. The ghost of Christmas past showed Scrooge a time when Belle broke off their engagement and Scrooge said, “Spirit! Show me no more!

When the Ghost of Christmas Past visits him, he is worried and very confused. Ebenezer Scrooge thinks that the entire thing is a joke. “There’s more gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are.” His actions illustrate how simple his life was, by catching him completely off guard, and showing that all of his joy is gone. He becomes terribly frightened by reliving his past.

How is Marley’s Ghost presented and what Messages does he present to Scrooge Marley’s ghost is the first supernatural character to visit scrooge and probably has one of the biggest effects on scrooge in the first place. Dickens presents Marley as a much more frightening ghost compared to the other ghost that visits scrooge. I think Dickens does this to show how Scrooge is frightened of what Marley has become physically and believes him. Also as Marley was Scrooges only friend I think thus definitely would have made him trust Marley’s ghost as they ran the business together and were the only people that understood each other.

When Scrooge sees the Ghost, he is scared by its frightening appearance, but he knows that the Spirit’s lessons are important. He says, “ ‘But as I know your purpose is to do me good, and as I hope to live to be another man from what I was, I am prepared to bear you company, and do it with a thankful heart’ ” (Dickens 2). In this point of the story, Scrooge wants to change and is ready learn how to change his ways. He realizes that the Ghosts’ lessons are vital if he wants to change.

Scrooge has started to really understand what he has done wrong in his life and how selfish and mean he really is . The ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows Scrooge his future and how the people don’t care that Scrooge dies “If there is any person in the town, who feels emotion caused by this man’s death,” said Scrooge quite agonised, “show that person to me, Spirit, I beseech you” ( Dickens 11 ). Scrooge is seeing how people treat him when he is dead but Scrooge has no clue they are talking about him. Scrooge is showed the future but Scrooge thinks he has already changed completely because he has no idea that the person the men are talking about is him. Scrooge is changing fast but he has not seen the shadows that have not happened but will happen soon "You are about to show me shadows of the things that have not happened, but will happen in the time before us," Scrooge pursued.
