There are many motifs that can be analyzed in ghost literature and folklore, though one that is ever present throughout the beginning of the telling of ghost stories is the motif of the suicide ghost. This ghost manifests after the untimely demise of an individual who takes their own life. This motif is intriguing, because of its complex nature and the fact that this motif persists through time, as it is seen in early ghost stories to the most recent accounts of ghosts. The suicide victim is often seen as returning as a ghost, because of the idea that these victims have unfinished business and internal turmoil. The suicide ghost motif persists because of the fascination of the premature death, along with the idea of understanding the internal …show more content…
Tucker retells popular and common recounts of ghost stories in college. She describes the use of ghost stories to help students understand the “new stage of life” and “offer explanations about what happened to murder, suicide, and accident victims” (4). Tucker directly analyzes several suicide ghost motifs in her work and defines them as a way to teach students about things like coping with school pressures and how bullying can be emotionally damaging. One story recalls the suicide of Edith, who was an RA at the University of Northern Colorado. The story goes that the students in the dorm would play tricks of Edith to pick on her that lead to her ultimately committing suicide in her room. Tucker writes that this story teaches a lesson to students “to think twice about doing something that will hurt someone’s feelings” (57). This ghost story is a way for students to understand the emotional feelings of others. Also how everyone has feelings and emotional struggles, such as in the story Edith’s emotional struggles caused by bullying that leads to her
A superintendent, Gus Sayer, from South Hadley High School informed the staff and students about the fifteen year old Phoebe Prince's death. However, the small town of South Hadley already knew Phoebe Prince was dead. The message about Phoebe Prince’s death was sent out on Thursday and by Friday there was a student-run candlelight vigil on the school's softball field. Local papers began to say students knew Phoebe Prince was miserable at school. These local papers had horrible headlines such as “Teenager Bullied to Death” and “...Phoebe Prince 15, Suspected of Committing Suicide Because of Bullying”.

The horror story is a uniquely interactive genre. Its main objective is to make the reader feel something, whether that be fear, anxiety, suspense, or any combination thereof. These feelings are evoked with the use of a monster, depending on the story it can be an external source, like a vampire or werewolf, or it could be something inside one of the characters, something in their psyche. In her story, “The Grave”, P.D.Cacek utilizes the literary elements of symbolism, imagery, and point of view.
In the literary works of Kendare Blake’s Anna Dressed in Blood, a malevolent ghost who was murdered in 1958 falls in love with a young, ghost killing, boy named Cas Lowood. This fictional novel portrays ghosts as decayed and very much like walking corpses, only more transparent. “An earthbound spirit is a human spirit that has not properly passed over” and the reasons for not passing over can go from fear to suicide and on (Juliano 1). Anna’s death has given her the power to brutally murder any unlucky soul who wanders into her home, but there is one thing: Anna does not like to kill. She is conflicted and scared of her own black power.
Thoughts in regards to suicide often include empathy for the dead, and wonder as to what drove the person to end their life. All too often, people ignore a rather important consideration: the thoughts and feelings of those left behind. The loved ones are left with the remorse, despondence, and grieving, while the dead are absolved of their worldly anguish. In “The Grieving Never Ends”, Roxanne Roberts employs a variety of rhetorical tactics including metaphors, imagery, tone, and syntax to illustrate the indelible effects of suicide on the surviving loved ones. Roberts effectively uses metaphors to express the complex, abstract concepts around suicide and human emotion in general.

Do you believe in ghosts? In Washington Irving’s short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow we follow Ichabod Crane. He is a superstitious school teacher who is in Sleepy Hollow which is supposedly haunted by the Headless Horseman. But, inferences that we get from the story as well as a lack of evidence in real life tell us that ghosts are not real. Death can never be escaped no matter what. In “The Masque of the Red Death” Edgar Allan Poe shows the theme of death, a suspenseful mood, and an ominous tone. In her novel, "Sula," Toni Morrison addresses a wide range of topics. In any case, one of the subjects that truly snatched my consideration was the topic of death. The demeanor of the characters and the group toward death is extremely surprising and existential. Passing imprints the end of the life of a man. In, "Sula," this can happen through disorder or mischances.
Hamlet is one of the most memorable Shakespearean plays due to the focus on a young prince`s struggle with obeying the ghostly figure that we witness briefly on stage. The ghost is certainly an important figure in shaping the outcome of this revenge tragedy. Thus, we must ponder what is the ghost and how it can be interpreted in a plethora of ways.
