Throughout history there have been dictators who have corrupted their countries, brainwashed their people, and have been responsible for the deaths of many. In Animal Farm, George Orwell wrote about animals on a farm who were able to speak and suffer through very similar things that humans have suffered through within their country, and under the rule of a modern day dictator. The animals in the novel were fighting for their freedom from the rule of Mr. Jones, a poor leader who often forgot to feed the animals and take care of them daily. Napoleon, a pig, ran out his competition and took power during a time of instability. And suddenly Animal Farm was turned into an allegorical novel. The allegory was for Stalin, the dictator that was responsible …show more content…
He used his cunning, manipulative, secret ways, just as Napoleon did, to control those who were under his rule. His rise to power started as a dark past, with him being a poor child, growing up in a small village, along with the death of his father as he finished fourth grade. He moved from village to village, and after being expelled from his catholic school, his punishment was for him to be sent away to the colonial army. During his later years, Mobutu took up careers such as bring a newspaper journalist, and a clerk, but eventually he turned back to the army, gaining higher ranks and eventually becoming a Sergeant Major. Soon after, the country of Congo began to dive into a tunnel of instability and chaos. Poverty came at a higher rate. War began to break out in neighboring countries. And Mobutu took this opportunity as his moment to shine and overthrow the nations leaders, Prime Minister Lumumba and President Kasavubu. Mobutu used his intelligence to organize a military coup and displace the nation’s front runners. Lumumba was chased out of the country by military forces under Mobutu’s rule and he was delivered into his enemies to be slaughtered. And this was the start of Mobutu's rise to power as the dictator of the soon to be country known as
Also Wood describes, “This Aladdin’s cave of treasure is Congo’s great fortune, but is also her greatest blight” (49). Many country want part of all this treasured but taking of advantage of its undeveloped stage. Many countries come to Congo to obtain its valuable resource but not only take its resource but influence the country government. In 1960 after the Belgian regime Patrice Lumumba wanted to be president. This man had different ideas that many did not like as the Americans.
played a key role in Lumumba's assassination, which had significant consequences for the Congo and the African continent. The U.S. government expected his death, and that was the result. Lumumba's death paved the way for Mobutu's rise to power and his brutal dictatorship, which lasted for over 30 years and led to widespread human rights abuses and the plundering of the country's natural resources. During and directly after the assassination took place, Americans had no idea and would have never thought the U.S. government had anything to do with Lumumba’s death. Sometime after though, documents were released that contained information about trying to poison Lumumba.
Melba faced many problems. Racism, and threats of physical and mental villance.
Lumumba was arrested, then assassinated. On the other hand, Joseph Mobutu, the chief of staff of the Congolese army organized two coup d’états; the second one was a success. Once in power, Mobutu formed an authoritarian Regime, attempting to purge the country from any colonial influence by starting a pro-African and Congolese cultural
When the colonial power arrives in Umuofia, we see a dramatic shift in power. Once, the elders of the town were in power. Those with the most titles or most yams in their farms are the most powerful. After the Christian missionaries appear, they are the ones taking control of the Igbo people. The British Empire takes over the society and forces change and religious conversion onto the people.
But this could be argued in various forms that it was not necessarily true, because Mbeki began implementing this separation program that caused obvious tension, which made his rule more difficult. However, it is argued that Mbeki is not narrow minded, nor a corrupt leader, but that he lacked strategic adaptability (Gerrit 2). Which is debatable, but comprehensive because he did have issues regarding the application of strategies in a way that could benefit the population while being “modern”, but what ended up making him unpopular. So, Thabo Mbeki was the one expected to be responsible for the politics post Mandela and De Klerk in South Africa, yet he is also criticized for being “a self-proclaimed modernizer in a government laced with incompetent, corrupt cronies; a critic of world capitalism for the widening patterns of inequality while he embraced conservative macroeconomic policy at home” (Foster 13). This established that Mbeki was not coming with positive changes, which he claimed were, but in fact did not aid South Africa or it’s population.
As a result, the chief of Wimbe begged for aid from President Muluzi and received it. Soon every farmer received a bag of NPK fertilizer to make up for the loss, but even that did not make up for the tragedy. Before Wiliams grandpa past away he said to him that “the country was once covered in forest with so many trees that the trial grew dark at noon” (pg 82). William was smart enough to realize the result of deforestation. “Cutting down trees is one of the things that keep us Malawians poor.
In the book ”Things fall apart”, Chinua Achebe takes us on a thrilling, but sad adventure. We get to follow Okonkwo’s strife to gain more power over his people, and how colonization affected the Igbo society, located in modern day Nigeria. Achebe gives us the feeling that the fall was all the white mans fault, but was this really the only factor? Was the Igbo society doomed to fail even at it’s start? Power is a dangerous thing, and one of the main reasons for the Ibgo society’s disintegration.
One of the most significant was social and economic issues. The increasing wealth gap created tension and unrest, leading to the rise of populist leaders who promised to address these issues (Bobertz, 2022). The inability of the government to address these concerns undermined its legitimacy and led to a loss of support among the populace. Another significant factor was military failure.

Previously Joseph Mobutu, he now calls himself Mobutu Sese Seko. In 1977 and 78 there are major invasions of Katanga, now renamed Shaba, by the opposition group FLNC, operating from Angola. Imagine a community with no hate, no war, and no famine. A place where everyone is accepted and everything is better than imaginable. This idea of perfection is known as a utopia, an ideal society. A utopia is known as a successful, perfect society. A place where everything goes right for everyone that lives there.
Animal Farm by George Orwell is somewhat of a cautionary tale outlining the dangers that accompany having one leader with superior knowledge and absolute power. The story begins with the secret meeting among the farm animals of Manor Farm, a farm run by the drunk and irresponsible Mr. Jones. Speaking at this meeting is the venerable Old Major, an old boar with great sagacity and who is revered among his peers. Old Major tells the animals of a dream that he has had, in which animals live long and happy lives, emancipated from human tyranny. Old Major continues to encourage his fellow animals to overthrow their human rulers, and live in camaraderie with each other, all as equals.
