ABSTRACT: Orwell`s “1984” is a scathing satire on modern totalitarian states. Orwell also fears that there are some political states as well which have their own open and subtle designs to strike at the bastion of liberty and the freedom of thought and expression. Orwell’s mind was troubled by three evils- class, oppression, and poverty. Against these three evils he set the following three values- decency, liberty, and justice. Around these six terms we would shape the whole story of Orwell’s mind and heart, taking his fiction and non-fiction together as a whole.

Living through the first half of the twentieth century, George Orwell watched the rise of totalitarian regimes in Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Soviet Union. Fighting in Spain, he witnessed the brutalities of the fascists and Stalinists first hand. His experiences awakened him to the evils of a totalitarian government. In his novel 1984, Orwell paints a dark and pessimistic vision of the future where society is completely controlled by a totalitarian government. He uses symbolism and the character’s developments to show the nature of total power in a government and the extremes it will go through to retain that power by repressing individual freedom and the truth.

It is not often that people can recall the exact moment in which they determined what they desired to do with the remainder of their life. However, reading this book amongst a room filled with my peers was that moment. Orwell’s dystopian novel opened me up to the idea of reading for pleasure, which has lead to an abundance of obtained knowledge. I am a strong advocate

Orwell had to see the dirty work of the empire at close quarters. He had to look through the steel bars at their grey, cowed faces of long term convicts, which made him afraid of what was to come. While he stood there with a blank face, he examined the scarred buttocks of the men, and smelled the rotten odor of the cages. As he thought in his head what a terrible thing to do, he just had to remember that he was in charge and don’t back down. Millions of thoughts went through his head as he wondered what it would be like to be in their position.

Orwell then moved to Paris in 1928, he lived for about a year and a half in Paris, writing novels and short stories which no one would publish. He started to run out of money and he was pushed into poverty again. He saying in a quote “I had several years of fairly severe poverty during which I was, among other things, a dishwasher, a private tutor and a teacher in cheap private schools.” Later in his life, four years to be exact he wrote the essay Why I Write, he was quoted to say that ‘what I have most wanted to do is to make political writing into an art’. His political convictions, which have been described as democratic socialism, inform books such as The Road to Wigan Pier, a documentary account of poverty in Britain.

During this, Orwell and his wife adopted a son, but his wife died shortly afterwards. Also during this time, Orwell finished Animal Farm, which was published in England in 1945. Just when Orwell’s personal life was falling apart his legend began. The book was famous mostly because it was interesting. Orwell continued to write for journals while completing his second well-known novel, 1984.

George Orwell was a novelist, essayist, and critic that had a rough start, but finally made it large with his books “1984” and “Animal Farm”. George came from a rough childhood and was truly a self made man. Born June 25,1903 in Motihari, India as Eric Arthur Blair, George belonged to a British family that was stationed in India. George's father was a British civil servant that was stationed in India and was considered and very dull and conservative man.

George Orwell lived in the 20th century during WWI and the Russian Revolution. This literary movement is known as the modernism time period. This time period was considered uneasy do to the increasing pressure with social disorder. This shows straight to the wars of WWI.WWII, the Spanish Civil War, and the rise of communism. Creators such as authors and painters imitated the social distress in their works, which display devastating horrors of this period.

He coped with this through his love for writing. When Orwell was only four years old, he began writing his first poems. When he was older, he said, “I had the lonely child’s habit of making up stories and holding conversations with imaginary persons, and I think that from the very start of my literary ambitions were mixed up with the feeling of being isolated and undervalued.” (Biography.com) Once Orwell reached the age of eight, he was sent to a preparatory boarding school on the Sussex coast (Britannica) where he quickly realized that the rich were treated better than the poor (Biography.com). Orwell was quickly distinguished from the other boys by his being very poor and very bright.

George Orwell’s first major work, Down and Out in Paris and London, was influenced by his family’s situation that he experienced while growing up. The book explored the lives of a family of the working poor. This relates to Orwell’s life growing up because his father was a hard working civil servent, who was financially incapable of paying for Gerorge to go to a university. Furthermore, another one of Orwell’s major works, Animal farm which expresses the political views of an anti-soviet. This book was influenced by his time as a BBC reporter where he was promoting the country’s views of Soviets during World War II.

History of George Orwell: George Orwell adopted that name because of his patriotism towards England. George was the name of the king at the time and Orwell was the name a river, of his favorite countryside location. His legal name was Eric Arthur Blair and was born on June 25, 1903 in Motihari, a British providence at the time where his father worked. At the age of one he moved to England. After some time being there he managed to obtain enough scholarships to attend St. Cyprian.
