Genesis by Buonarroti Michelangelo and Fountain by Marcel Duchamp are both considered one of the most important and valuable artworks in human history. However, one might take a look at these two works and say that they have nothing in common. Indeed, Genesis is a result of a four-year-effort of not only Michelangelo but his numerous assistants, with massive support of the Vatican. On the other hand, Fountain is no more than a piece of urinal, almost rejected from the salon. The reason they both are precious artworks to mankind despite this difference is that each of the works represent spirits of different times. It shows the sequence of how the meaning of art to mankind has changed over history, mostly reflecting the process of acquiring …show more content…
Artists’ personal expressions in their works were restricted. In this era, most of the remaining artworks were ordered by the Pope, royal family, or nobles. Genesis by Buonarroti Michelangelo and The last supper by Leonardo da Vinci are typical examples of the works ordered by the Vatican, in the purpose of intensifying the authority of the Catholic Church. Likewise, Coronation of Napoleon by Jacques Louis David shows the glory of the emperor’s accession. Even though the Renaissance is known as a period of humanism, respectively gaining some liberty in artistic format, the contents of the art were still limited to religion or legends. When it comes to the modern times, artists started considering art as self-expression. Freed from restriction of contents, art has gained its meaning of expressing human thoughts and feelings, which evoked various kinds of new trends flourish. Post-impressionists such as Vincent van Gogh expressed their personal feelings in art pieces. Cubists like Pablo Picasso found out brilliant ways to put multiple viewpoints on one canvas, in the purpose of searching for the nature of objects. German expressionists like Georg Grosz and Otto Dix considered art as a means of social
These numerous manifestations and functions of the arts acted as a premonition and were necessary for the reader to understand that art is important for both writers. Once we were acquainted with it, we were able to dig deeper and explore what I considered to be the
The artists of the abstract expressionist movement insisted that art should look like the inward expression of the artist and also emphasize emotional expression and freedom. Abstract expressionists place importance on the gestural application of paint. The abstract expressionist style is vulnerable to viewer interpretation as it is non representational art. This is essentially what made the abstract expressionist art distinct from the traditional art of the 1940s and 1950s. "Spontaneity, gestural brushstrokes, non objective imagery, and fields of intense color characterize Abstract Expropssonism.
Unlike traditional art where a painter expressed his vision by
What is the significance of a work of art? Some may ask this question, well the answer is simple. Art, in simplest terms, is communication of the common story, art is a tool used to bring us all together as humans so we can interpret ideas or concepts that seems abstract. Art is important because it allows us to understand each other. Perhaps one of the most influential artist of the 20th century was Salvador Dali.
Artists have used these aesthetics on canvases to portray inner emotions, ideas, expressions. They portray not just what the naked eye can see, rather what the soul can feel and perceive. Each of these art works portrays a different story of the Artists. Each is like a page from the artists Autobiography.
Artwork could be defined as a universal language that can carry ideas and emotions of an artist toward audiences via a particular narrative. Presently, there are many memorable art pieces from various artists. Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso as well have become prominent from their unique styles of artwork, which conveys a profound feeling through basic elements of art, such as use of color and a narrative. Although two of them are highly notable for art, there are four differences between Monet’s garden and Picasso’s garden, which are artist’s background information, technique, inspiration and meaning.
All artists use different styles to help convey their message through paintings like Expressionism and Cubism which are ways to communicate with the world emotionally or physically, similar to Surrealism that is both spontaneous and strange in visual qualities. Each painting has a specific style that is used throughout the composition to describe the subject matter in a way that distinguishes from other works of art. It’s up the artist to incorporate his particular style into subjects to create a transformation from reality onto the canvas using multiple ways of integrating certain elements to establish a new piece. Throughout the years artists have been generating numerous art collections that were uniquely design and thought out to demonstrate various procedures that will somebody influence others into finding new ideas for styling art.
The word Visual Arts in itself is a larger concept. Visual art is a modern but imprecise term for a broad category of art which includes a number of artistic disciplines from various subcategories of art like painting, photography, moving camera, sculptors etc, so it is impossible to define the meaning of the visual art in a simple context. This paper will deal with influence of Dante’s writing on the paintings of renaissance and the artist during that time. As Bryson mention that ‘Paintings is once again thought as a rivalry between technicians for the production of a replica so perfect that art will take the palm from the nature’.
The Definition and Connotation of Art All humans require ways to channel their inner feelings; usually through expression. As humans changed over time, so did their means of communication. Thus, art became a primary channel of expression because of its effectiveness and versatility. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, art is defined as “skill; display, application, or expression.”
The first piece of art that I believe to be important is The Last Judgment, which I believe to be Weyden greatest piece of art. The piece is oil on an oak panel(Rogier Van Der Weyden). It is about the day that God will pass his final judgment over the all of souls humanity, and assigning them to either eternal excruciation or eternal bliss(Rogier Van Der Weyden). These picece of art goes with the Bible, in Matthew 13: 40-43, to all of evil-doers will be thrown "into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth," and the righteous ones "will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. "
To the contemporary audience the whole enterprise seemed like youthful antagonism, hardly worthy of the name “art”. Art up until this point had always had subject matter but now the process, revealed by the artists brush strokes, is the subject matter. Abstract Expressionism was very new and extremely different visually but it relied heavily on past movements mainly: the Dadaist's reliance on chance, and the Surrealist's endorsement of Freudian theory that embraces the relevance of dreams, sexual drives and the authenticity of ego (unfiltered self-centeredness, i.e. narcissism), which this art expresses through "action." The key to understanding Abstract Expressionism is to understand the concept of "deep" from a 1950s dictionary. "Deep" meant not decorative, not facile and not insincere.
Abstract expressionist work remains widely put down by various parts of the public for lacking much of the fundamental roots and base features that other, more realism-focused styles present in a way that is more understandable at first glance. Unfortunately, many only view art as a pretty scene to gaze at or something to always be pleasant to the viewer’s eyes, without regard to intentions and processes that add so much more to any given piece. As times moves forward, there will always be a number of individuals who just don’t care for non objective work due to a lack of willingness to understanding it, even if they really do contain all of these deeper components, and sometimes even a significant degree more when one really takes time to analyze and take in all that each piece has to offer. Among many who stretch the boundaries and basic ideas of art, Jackson Pollock was one of the few who really acted as a leading force behind the abstract expressionist movement.
Art has changed drastically through the years. From century to century there have been many changes that occurred in the history of art between the feelings, the religious background, the styles, and the characteristics, there has been such a drastic change in art history. One of the main purposes of art is to understand the subject matter at hand. Subject matter does not change all that much over time. Although new subject matter has grown, the human form, nature, and events still continue to capture the attention of artists.
In this essay i will be defining the art historical perspectives of the methods formalism, iconography and social history of art and their aims. I will be discussing if art can just be aesthetically pleasing or must there always be a political and social meaning/inspiration behind it. I will be doing a detailed analysis of The Large Blue Horse(1911) by Franz Marc using the method formalism to show that not all artwork needs to be observed using various methods since not all art works have social/political meaning/inspiration. I will be detailing how The Large Blue Horses(1911) is just aesthetically pleasing and only needs the method formalism to understand it. I selected The Large Blue Horses(1911) by Franz Marc because the the way he used bright colours, curved line and his subject matter is horses not humans, it has no reference to world war 1 which was a few years away from when he finished his painting and tension was already being felt and other artists were reacting to it through their art.
Art makes people see beyond and enriches people’s lives in several ways. In arts, there are two points of view; objective view of art, subjective view of art. Objective view of art depends on only the observer, but subjective art of view is based on personal preference. People’s idea of beauty and a aesthetics change over time and people’s perception of art depends on shared and personal knowledge. Shared knowledge affects personal knowledge in art since it creates commonly accepted paradigm that society evaluates it as ‘art’.
