Seizures occur due to an abnormal electrical charge in the brain. There are two different types of seizures: generalized and partial seizures. They are classified as two different groups because of where and how they begin. Generalized seizures begin with an electrical charge that affects both sides of the brain at one time. Partial seizures begin with one electrical impulse that only affects a small part of the brain. Unusually low blood sugar levels, brain injuries, strokes, brain tumors, cancer, the used of drugs such as cocaine, medications and flashing lights can be the cause of a seizure. Epilepsy is a disorder in which nerve cell activity is disturbed and causes seizures. However, doctors can use several tests to determine if a person …show more content…
Bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites cause meningitis and encephalitis. Although, meningitis can be caused by any of those four infectious causes, it is most often caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Pneumococcal meningitis is the most common form of meningitis and is a bacterial infection. The disease is caused by the bacteria called Streptococcus Pneumoniae. It can also lead to pneumonia, sinus infections and blood poisoning. Children under the age of two and older adults who have weak immune systems are at the most risk. Pneumococcal meningitis is harmful and can cause severe brain damage or ca even cause someone to go deaf. Meningococcal meningitis is the second most common form of meningitis and it is caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitides. People at risk for this disease include infants under the age of one, people who travel to foreign countries, freshmen in college who live in the dorms and people with suppressed immune systems. Between 10 and 15 percent of the cases are fatal and 10 to 15 percent up end with brain …show more content…
These enterovirus are present in many things such as mucus, feces and saliva and are transmitted through direct contact with someone or something that is infected. The virus then enters the mouth and travels to the brain so that it can multiply there. Encephalitis can also caused by the same infections, but more than half of the cases remain undiagnosed. Most cases of encephalitis are caused by enteroviruses, herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, West Nile virus or rabies. Herpes simplex encephalitis can affect anyone at any age but is usually seen with people under the age of twenty or people over the age of forty. Symptoms of HSE include: fever and headaches that can last up to a week, changes in behavior, seizures and hallucinations. Genital herpes (type 2 herpes), is caused by sexual interaction. Many people do not know they have the virus because there may be no symptoms or sores. For newborns, symptoms include: lethargy, seizures, irritability and poor feeding. Both meningitis and encephalitis are contagious and can be spread through contact of saliva, mucus and feces. The disease can also be spread y kissing, sharing drinks, toothbrushes, lipsticks and
As of 2013, the number of people with MS was estimated to be over 2.3 million worldwide. ( atlas 2013) Most of the non-traumatic disabilities in young adults are caused by MS [1]. It is considered that an interaction of genetic factors, environmental predisposition, and abnormal immune responses can be the chief causes of MS, But the exact etiology of MS is still in question [2]. MS has been greatly studied within the recent years, but a great number of clinical challenges still remain in regard to diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.[6]
When James was younger, he suffered from psychosomatic, or stress-induced seizures, similar to epileptic
A lot of the children are born with the disabilities but rarely can occur later on in life. For example a seizure, seizures occur when abnormal signals from the brain change the way the body functions. It also occurs when a large number of the cells send out an electrical charge at the same time. There are three types of seizures, Non-epileptic Seizures, Partial Seizures, and Generalized Seizures. Non-epileptic Seizures occurs with an injury to the head or an illness.
Task 2 C228 V2 Breanna Bras Western Governors University An example of a communicable disease outbreak that crossed international borders is the H1N1 influenza virus, also known as “swine flu”. The H1N1 flu outbreak was originally discovered in April 2009. The first known occurrence originated in Mexico and then was detected in the United States soon after. By May 2009, the H1N1 flu virus was confirmed to have spread to a total of 39 countries including: Spain, United Kingdom, Panama, Colombia, Brazil, Italy, China, France, Korea, New Zealand, Japan, Ireland, Germany, Argentina, El Salvador, Belgium, Denmark, Australia, Peru, Norway, India, Austria, Thailand Cuba, Sweden, Portugal, Ecuador, Finland, Guatemala, Israel, Malaysia, Netherlands, Turkey and Poland ("Latest news on swine flu", 2009).
A concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury caused by a forceful movement of the head, for example, a blow or jolt causing the brain to rapidly move inside the skull, resulting in chemical changes in the brain, which may cause stretching or damage to brain cells. Concussions may cause symptoms to interfere with school work, social, family relationships, and participation in sports. Each year it is reported that there are
Social influences were also a big factor in my episode of seizing. My best friend went to find help, the teachers helped carry me into a different room, and everyone that was near stopped what they were doing to crowd over me. Once I was in the different room an upperclassman, which had been diagnosed with epilepsy, explained that after she seizes she would always throw up too. She told me that it was all going to be fine, and that really helped me. Developmental influences also have occurred.
There are also signs of microglia activation resulting in Babes nodules and neuronophagia. This surprising lack of major histopathological changes and neuronal death or apoptosis raised the hypothesis that the clinical outcomes following RABV infection resulted from major neuronal dysfunction, the basis of which remained so far unknown. Further, the contribution of glial cells and their crosstalk with neurons remained
1. Introduction Absence Seizures have been a medical concern for a long time, and were first described in medical literature back in 1705 by Poupart (Temkin, 1971). According to The World Health Organization (WHO) at least 40 forms of epilepsy have been identified, and they are characterized by an abrupt and transitory synchronization of neuron activities, whose causes are not always well known. 2.
Several common viruses can cause encephalitis: Measles, Polio, Rubella, Varicella, Rabies, and Mumps (Encephalitis, 2012). The emotional changes of Encephalitis are changes in self concept, anxiety, frustration and anger, emotional lability, perception of emotions, and depression, commonly found in the afflicted girls (Dewar B, 2014). Therefore, making the parallels between the afflicted girls and the victims of Encephalitis clearly
Lil' Wayne, a Grammy-winning rapper, has been open about his struggle with epilepsy. The neurological disorder, which causes recurrent seizures, has had a significant impact on his life physically, mentally, and emotionally. Physically, seizures are the hallmark symptom of epilepsy. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, seizures can cause a wide range of physical symptoms, including muscle spasms, loss of consciousness, and falls.
Seizures are becoming more common within classrooms. There are six different types of seizures that have their own effects on a person. Some seizures involve short periods of the student being unresponsive, and others are more intense and involve compulsion. The type of seizure that may occur one day is unknown to the person. Students with epilepsy or any other disability that causes seizures are unaware the seizure may occur, or when it will occur.
Polio, or Poliomyelitis, is a contagious viral disease that in most severe cases can cause forms of paralysis, difficulty breathing and sometimes death. Polio occurs in children but those under the age of 5 years old are more likely to contract this virus than others. 1 in 200 polio infections will result in permanent paralysis. Poliomyelitis comes from the Greek word polió meaning “grey” and Latin word myelitis meaning inflammation of the spinal cord.
Poliomyelitis mainly affects children under 5 years of age. Q How is it transmitted to others? The virus enters the body through the mouth and multiplies in the intestine.
