The area of gender inequality has been widespread in our society since the inception of humanity. Gender inequality is a socially constructed issue which stems from the hierarchy men have had over women for centuries. The similar problem is still is dominant in the field of law enforcement where women are far underrepresented compared to men, and this paper will examine the history, statistics, gender roles and philosophical perspectives behind the underrepresentation of women in law enforcement. However many police departments across the country have gradually begun to intergrade more diversity, inclusivity and gender equality programs to balance the issue of gender inequality better. As children grow up, gender roles are enforced upon them by different agents of socialization such as teachers, parents and other authority figures in the attempts to define an ideal women whom is easy to please and not assertive resulting girls to develop a lower self-esteem compared to boys (Robert Brym, 2018, p. 53). Which can make women in the workplace dominated by men more vulnerable to verbal or sexual harassment (Robert Brym, 2018, p. 174). Further supporting male superiority in policing encourages the rate of sexual harassment against women. A study published in the journal of occupational health psychology found about 64% of policewomen have experienced sexual harassment at least once in their career from their peers, the women reported most common types of harassments were offensive remarks and comments about their bodies or appearance (Stans de Haas, 2009, p. 7). A recent survey of 4000 police officers in Canada found the stress of work-life balance is more substantial on policewomen than it is on male police officers. While i dont think that women and men will ever be equal in the police force, I wish the author mentioned the practices and regulations that can be put into place to minimize that gap. Increasing the percentage of women in the police force will aid to reduce the level of discrimination. To increase the amount of females in the field, Canadian police departments can create campaigns specifically made to recruit women. The campaigns can focus on sharing the benefits of working in law enforcement. Minimizing discrimination towards women can also be done by requiring each staff member to take part in bias training.
Police corruption is a hot topic displayed everyday through media and everyday life. Conversely, police is not as corrupt as what is presented through media today. But definitely there are always rotten apples, rotten barrels and even rotten orchards in police that ruin it for everyone else. Canadian policing mostly seems to have rotten apples rather than the barrels or orchards idea. This topic of police corruption became a hot topic specify in the U.S due to the LAPD Rampart scandal, as all three of these ideas of the rotten apples, rotten barrels and even rotten orchards were present.
Masculinity is idolized by the male sex and is crucial to their survival amongst the rest of their male counterparts. It comes with prestige, power, privilege, and in some cases an egotistical persona. When this masculinity is inflated by the existence of legitimate power, there is room for misuse of power. When looking at law enforcement, their misuse of power can be seen in not only their sexual misconduct, but their policing of sex, gender lines, and the policing of women in general, especially in the terms of women of color: black, native, Asian, etc. Women of all races have always been seen as a target to be sexually objectified and used as a prize to boast about to other men.

When it comes to racial profiling by the police in the criminal justice system, African Americans are more often racially profiled than any other race in America today. This has become a problem because not ever black individual is a criminal and not every criminal is black. Male officers have also stated negative remarks about female officers who work in Law Enforcement. These barriers have caused female police officers to resign from their positions to avoid any issues and because gender discrimination and the other complaints aren’t taken seriously in Law enforcement. By the females constantly compared to the male police officers has caused stress on them. It’s much harder for woman to advance in Law enforcement than men and when interviewers make their decisions they are more than likely choose men over women. It is important to think critically when dealing with the barriers discussed above because it can be challenging and cause someone to give up and quit.
There are many indicators of the huge impact in disparities in sentencing women as compared to men and more so when it revolves around minorities ( race and class). Though there are lower crime rates among women as compared to men, there are significant disparities which tend to show favouritism to women. Research has shown that men get 63 per cent longer custodial sentences than women. In addition, it is twice more likely to have women get non custodial sentences even after conviction. However, as mentioned the disparities are more profound when issues of race and class are intertwined in the sentencing.
