Future Trends in Nursing Practice
Nursing practice experiences constant changes due to the implementation of new trends related mainly to the demographic shifts, medical research, and technological advancements. Being the closest to patients’ caregivers, nurses are considered as major contributors to healthcare organizations. Nurses are obliged to have an evidence-based understanding of the significant influence that can be made through health promotion interventions and deliver this understanding to the community at large (Sanjiv, 2014). What are the most recent trends in the modern healthcare system; and what influence do they have on nursing?
Nursing Roles: Due to the expanding opportunities within nursing, there is the need for collaborative

Thus, those who are intending to enter the nursing profession should be prepared to use remote monitoring devices, electronic health record systems or high-tech simulators which will be widely used in hospitals. Each facility can possess different types of technology, so nurses should be ready to master the new systems or equipment. Furthermore, text apps can enable electronic communication within the facility so that nurses can respond more efficiently to the patient needs. With the increase of electronic medical records, hospitals keep track of patient information digitally. Such innovative methods are developed to improve the work routine for nurses, enhance the hospital team collaboration and access to the patient personal information. In this way, technology advancements are one of the most crucial trends nurses can already apply in their healthcare …show more content…
According to the results of the recent recession, the nurses older than 50 years of age had to reenter the healthcare workforce to mentor younger nurses (Cherry & Jacob, 2008). Currently, there is already a nursing shortage observed within the healthcare sector and this tendency starts increasing, so the policymakers need to take some measures to adjust the medical facilities to this coming trend. For now, nursing students should learn to be more responsible and initiative to master essential core competencies. The results of the study conducted by the research university in Sweden determines that the group supervision is one of the most successful methods to monitor student professional growth, as well as management and student personal development (Cherry & Jacob, 2008). However, there are new methods promoting more effective and closer to practice learning methods for nursing. Even though, medical staff is aging and retiring, but there are still a number of prospective qualified replacements severely limited. Some medical facilities expand enrollments by means of part-timers, university clinical faculty and by increasing popularity of online courses and simulations ("American Association of Colleges of Nursing | New AACN Data Confirm Enrollment Surge in Schools of Nursing", 2016).
The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act laid out the groundwork for a program designed to equip hospitals and medical practices around the country with electronic health record systems by providing financial incentives (p. 245). However, in some markets such as long-term care facilities the transition to electronic system has been slow. Professional nurses whose careers are in long-term care in our nation will play major role in getting electronic health systems into these settings. It will take nurse advocating for these systems and continuation of research showing evidence that supports widespread adaptation of these systems, but nurse united under one cause, best practice can make anything happen.
Though it seems that it was specifically made for nursing, it serves as a broader picture by ways of improving the access to healthcare, lowering the cost of it, and improving the quality of care. For this purpose the IOM report has set fundamentals changes such as the transformation of nursing education, practice, and leadership. For the remainder of this paper this paper I will elaborate on how the IOM report impacts the nursing
Using IT to reduce the number of descriptions are taking place during the same time implementation and other task occurring in the nursing unit. Challenges Experienced during an Informatics
Nursing informatics is an important aspect of nursing practice. There are various definitions of nursing informatics but it all come down to the merging of patient care (nursing) and technology (Birz, 2015). I personally have not had any experience of working in the healthcare and my knowledge is limited to my observation at clinical during my LPN program. I noticed the use of computers for dictation and the barcode scanning when giving medication and I felt that was pretty cool. The healthcare delivery system drastically continues to change and nurses and other health care providers are expected to be technological competent to keep up with the change.
Healthcare is an ever-evolving continuum consisted of many changes that occur in a day-to-day basis. The need of continuing education is necessary for us to advance our skills and knowledge as nurses caring for the general population. However, advanced knowledge that goes beyond the science of nursing is crucial to excel in the field. Excellence in nursing requires us to be politically active and informed of the constant changes that occur within the health care system. It is also important to be aware of the accessible resources and organizations to be able to seek the proper resources needed.
For this week’s discussion I chose to write scenario 12 Nurse- Nurse. I really believe that being in preceptor’s role makes all the difference in new nurses’ life and it can also be very rewarding. By precepting we can be role models in our nursing professional. “It seems natural and obvious that all nurses, given their education, would share similar values and beliefs about patient care” (Porter-O’Grady & Malloch, 2016, p211). Preparing students and new nurses to transition from being new to the field and help them to achieve competency and proficiency is still remain concern in our hospital or work area.
Now I would like to move on and facilitate further discussion on week’s other article, which is conceived by Shores. Shore provides us a different perspective of healthcare reforms as they pose challenges to nursing. Summary of Shore’s
Right now, nurses all over the country are busy taking care of sick patients. Healthcare is continually evolving and changing. It seems like patient’s needs are becoming greater by the day. We’ve been told for years now that with the aging of the baby boomers the need for nurses will grow. These patients are often complex with multiple medical problems that need to be managed.
Hi everyone, My name in Oscar E Hermosillo and I am from the NAU-Yuma nursing program. I have lived since I was 7 years old in a small town called Somerton which is roughly about 10-15 miles south of Yuma. My goals for future nursing practice are kind of up in the air right now.
Camilli (2014), asserted that educational delivery is being carried out in innovative and convenient ways, including the use of simulation, virtual classrooms, distance education, podcasts, web conferencing, and online assessments. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) can be easily recognized as standard components of the nursing process and daily nursing practice, appearing as electronic assessments. Furthermore, nursing students are gaining increasing exposure to technologies during undergraduate studies which includes increasing volumes of electronic health records (EHR), digital diagnostic tools, health monitoring, and reporting equipment, barcode scanning, as well as mobile and hand-held documentation devices. This skills can be applied to clinical setting such as using EHR to follow up patient laboratory results and relay critical lab values to the physician. Also, barcode scanning can be used to prevent medical errors by giving the correct medications to the patient and also prompts the EHR for any related allergies to the medication that is prescribed during treatment or hospitalization.
This is the changing aspect that nurses are facing, how to provide care in a technological
According to Kemppainen, Tossavainen, and Turunen (2013), “health promotion by nurses can lead to many positive health outcomes including adherence, quality of life, patients’ knowledge of their illness and self-management” (p. 490). Some strategies for health promotion included giving information to patients and providing the education and being involved
As mentioned before, an increase of technology use is a major influence on nursing, the introduction of evidence-based practice in the professional field and in the educational environment plays a role in a nurse’s everyday life. Also, there are the changes in society itself that benefit the nursing profession. For example, the breaking of stereotypical gender roles in society results in male nurses
This assignment is based on a personal experience from my clinical practice at Richmond hospital, on a general surgical unit. The situation involves my experience in caring for a 62-year-old male patient, and the lessons I have gained from this significant clinical experience. To maintain confidentiality of my client, a pseudonym Mr. Chen will be used to protect the client’s anonymity. This paper will discuss the client’s background, a professional nursing standard, a reflection on my strengths and learning needs, and evaluation of outcomes to advance my knowledge for future nursing practice. Through this critical analysis and reflection of my continuing personal and professional development needs in clinical practice, I believe this will
One of the trend that has influenced my profession as professional nurse is a shift from primitive training without standards to a modern high standards of training with regulations and licensing which promotes quality of services offered by the nurses. Secondly, the change from religious
