In John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men there are a lot of themes. The themes consist of friendship, loneliness, discrimination and dreams. All of these themes are important, and play immense role in the outcome at the end. The major theme is that friends stick together; unconditionally; this is demonstrated through Lennie and George's actions in Weed, in the bunk house, and in the aftermath of Curly's wife's death. One example of true friends sticking together is exemplified when George stays with Lennie after Lennie's actions in Weed. George said "An' you ain't gonna do no bad things like you did in Weed (7)." This suggests George really cares about Lennie, and he doesn't want him to do anything that will get him in trouble. George said "we run, they was …show more content…
An example is when George said "Oh! I ain't saying he's bright. He ain't. But I say he's a God damn good worker. He can put up a four hundred pound bale (22)." This suggests George wants Lennie to get the job and to stay with him. George knows Lennie doesn't apprehend a lot of information and ends up doing the wrong thing. Another example is when the boss said, "Well, I never seen one guy take so much trouble for another guy. I like to know what your interest is (22)." This implies George really cares about Lennie, and other people recognize the trouble he is taking. When Curly slugged Lennie in his face and Lennie doesn't do anything so, George said "Get him Lennie, Don't let him do it." When Lennie took Curly's hand away from his face and looked about for George. Curly had slashed at Lennie's eye and his face was covered with blood. George yelled at Lennie "I said get him (63)." Both of these examples suggest George doesn't want Lennie to get beat up and he rather get in trouble and lose his job. All of this examples indicate the friendship of Lennie and George is
“if George sees me talkin’ to you he’ll give me hell” (87). Lennie doesn’t understand that some of his actions are morally wrong. When George gets upset, Lennie becomes increasingly hard on himself, which causes more damage.
Because on Pg.14 it says “Course you did. Well, look. Lennie---if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always done before, I want you to come here an’ hide in the brush.” Meaning that George knew that Lennie would again get into more trouble.
For example, when Lennie talks about leaving and living in a cave, George tells him that he has to stay with him to survive. George does not like to hurt Lennie 's feeling, even though he does yell at him a lot. For example, when George is saying he would be better off without Lennie, but when he sees Lennie
This creates tension in the text because George knows that he shouldn't have said that to the other guys. He needs to protect Lennie or they will end up walking all over him. George's greatest challenge is to protect Lennie from Curley and Curley’s wife because he knows that they have so much power on the ranch. Curley's wife questions Lennie “Where’s you get them bruises on your face?” Lennie looked up guilty.
. George finds them places to live and work because he wants to be a good friend and companion to Lennie. He and Lennie are good friends because they balance each other out. They show each other different perspectives and they help each other see things differently. George shows Lennie love in weird ways.
We all may have had the feeling of loneliness and isolation, wanting companionship feeling abandonment. In John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men, there are men living on a ranch having their own reasons for loneliness or being isolated. The three characters Crooks, George, and Lennie crusade dealing with own ways of loneliness and isolation. Crooks has no one that likes him because he’s black, Lennie struggles mentally and George struggles with always having to care for him. They all can’t decide whether it is that they want to be alone or not.
George and Lennie are the main characters in this story. They are two young friends who were left with nothing except some hopes and dreams. George and Lennie have dreamt of having and owning a small farm, but they were not able to fulfill their wishes because their lives were followed by heartbreaking failure. In the text, ‘Of Mice and Men’, friendship is portrayed in a very confusing way. It is dangerous so as to say.
In ‘Of Mice and Men’, written by John Steinbeck, friendship is portrayed as one of the main themes in this novella and a very important part of people’s lives. Steinbeck also portrays friendship by highlighting the importance of friendship and showing how its presence and absence can trigger many positive and negative emotions. Its presence creates hope, feeling of companionship and a sense of responsibility. In spite of friendship’s presence creating positive feelings, its absence does the complete opposite. It generates a feeling of loneliness and isolation.
George treated Lennie like a brother, he loved Lennie very dearly from the beginning to the
In the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck friendship became so meaningful to others. George and Lennie took care of each other, supported on another, and made sacrifices for one another. George and Lennie’s relationship shows us the true meaning of friendship. George and Lennie take care of one another. “…because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why.”
Curly said “I'm gonna shoot the guts out of that big bastard myself” The book shows Lennie is not very smart or aware. He knew that Curley and his people would kill Lennie, and he would suffer or be placed in jail. George made the decision of killing Lennie because it was a better choice for Lennie’s future.
After hearing this, he expresses his pity towards Lennie and his inability to listen. Early in the novella, George lashes out in anger towards Lennie, he says, “ ‘An whatta I got,’ George went on furiously. ‘I got you! You can 't keep a job and you
(pg. 22). Since Lennie is mentally challenged and can’t think fast enough, he relies on George to tell him what to do. Curley had turned on Lennie by punching him; and protect himself, Lennie had grabbed Curley’s hand and crushed with his own hand. Lennie felt bad for what he did so George
I believe that Lennie wants to leave George, because Lennie Said “caus I can jus’ as well go away, George an live an in a cave”. So it seems like Lennie wants to leave, because he thinks he is a hassle to George. In chapter one Lennie said that “I’d find things, George” Implying that he wants to prove to George that he can be on his own, and leave him alone. So I think that Lennie truly wants George to leave him alone, so that he won’t be an hassle anymore.
Lennie and George act as a foil to each other and now this
