Imagine being held accountable for the deaths of two “star-struck” lovers. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, one of the many questions asked is who is most responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Personally I believe that the deaths cannot just be placed on one person. First off Mercutio can be at blame for the introduction of Juliet in to Romeo's Life. Secondly Romeo and Juliet are responsible for their own deaths because of there irrational decisions. Finally Friar Lawrence is responsible for all the secrets he kept from the families. All three place an important role in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.

When Romeo secretly attends the party, he acts irresponsibly, putting himself into a dangerous situation with his enemies, the Capulets. Juliet notices how dangerous of a feat this is by asking the nurse for his name, when given the answer Juliet says “ My only love, sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me. That I must love a loathed enemy” (1.5.138-142). This leads to Romeo and Juliet falling in love which then results in there secret marriage. They both prove the impulsiveness of their youth by quickly declaring their love for eachother, and rushing to secretly get married which then leads to numerous secrets being held from Capulet and Lady who unknowingly select Paris to marry Juliet, which causes her to ask Friar Lawrence for a sleeping potion. Romeo and Juliet can also be seen as irresponsible because of the way they executed keeping there marriage a secret. Juliet requests to Friar Lawrence for help exclaiming that she will kill herself if she cannot be with Romeo. Given the fact that Romeo and Juliet were separated, keeping there secret marriage under the radar was deemed as an impossible task. Friar failed to make sure that the letter got to Romeo, Tybalt challenged Romeo to a duel, and Mercutio took the challenge to Tybalt’s duel. Who is to blame? All three are. The one who could of prevented Romeo and Juliet’s death the most, was the Friar.

Love resembles a fire, difficult to start, easy to set off, throughout Romeo and Juliet's journey, Friar Laurence is the water, setting off their love with the worst decisions he could possibly make. In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, occurs many different scenes portraying the story of two star-crossed lovers, hence the name, to their lamentable death. But throughout this whole play, Friar Laurence was easily the magnet for the most chaos between their love, making very unintelligent decisions that lead to their death. Although Friar Laurence seems very helpful, he easily proves to cause the most disorder causing the inevitable death of Romeo and Juliet. At the time, there was a plague going on which prevented Friar John to deliver the message to Romeo.
