At different times in U.S history the government has disputed about certain actions that limited civil liberties. Some include the Executive Order 9066 which relocated Japanese Americans in 1942 and the USA Patriot Act in 2001. These acts impacted the United States majorly. They both occurred after a tragic event took place and the government wanted to protect themselves, the people, and the country. The Executive Order 9066 was passed after the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese in 1941.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor the United States was in an uproar. Americans were now in fear of Japanese spies and they placed their suspicions on ordinary Japanese American citizens. President Roosevelt was swayed into ordering Executive Order 9066. President Roosevelt was not justified in ordering Executive Order 9066 due to violation of constitutional rights, blatant racism, and long term negative consequences caused by the internment of Japanese American citizens in 1942. Franklin Roosevelt used poor judgement when he ordered Executive Order 9066 because of the racism behind this executive order.

During Congressional committee hearings, The Department of Justice representatives raised objections to the proposal. The West Coast was first divided into military zones, and then on February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 shortly after the Pearl Harbor Bombing. President Roosevelt was not justified in his decision because many Japanese Americans had volunteered to serve in the armed forces and many lost their businesses and homes. Due to many Japanese Americans volunteering to serve in the armed forces, President Roosevelt's decision was not justified. Executive Order 9066 The attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese not only brought us into the war but also changed America's view of Japanese Americans living in the United States. Executive Order 9066 forced Japanese Americans into internment camps where camplife was degrading and was later viewed to be unjust. On December 7th, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor in the Hawaii Territory.

President Roosevelt signed off on the Executive Order 9066 in February of 1942. The Executive Order 9066 made it mandatory for all Japanese ancestry citizens to evacuate the West Coast. Civil liberties are individual privileges that are secure by law from unwarranted disturbances. Every ethnic group is obligated under this law. America has a tendency of constraining civil liberties tightly during wartime being that it ends up creating anxiety and suppression for everyone. In December 7th, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor during WWII and led to abomination toward every Japanese person or those with Japanese ancestry alike. Hence, this steered to the creation of internment camps, the case Korematsu v. United States, and The Civil Liberties Act of 1988.

During Theodore Roosevelts presidency, his interests were focused on foreign affairs. Roosevelt helped prevent Europe from controlling the rest of the western territories, like how Britain tried to control the early American colonies. The “Roosevelt Corollary” allowed the U.S to stay in control of the Western hemisphere. His addition to the Monroe Doctrine helped American imperialism rise and expand. At the turn of the 20th century, his addition helped shape the nation that it is today.

On January 11th, 1944, Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) gave the annual State of the Union Address, (SotU) which was professional and insightful, yet flawed. As most things go, FDR’s SotU Address was presented with faulty arguments; however convincing the arguments may have been. These are called fallacies. In a fallacy, you try to persuade a person to do something by giving an argument of an ethical, emotional, and/or logical nature with false evidence.

The mindset of the feared Americans was incorrect, but they saw no other option besides internment camps.

I strongly disagree with the internment of Japanese-Americans because it was unconstitutional, the Japanese-Americans showed loyalty by volunteering to fight in the 442nd combat team, and because of the hypocrisy of the situation. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941 brought the United States into World War II. This brought worry and disgust from American citizens, towards the Japanese Americans and caused the passing of Executive Order 9066. The executive order imprisoned 110,000 of citizens in internment camps.
