Through these considerations it was possible to identify four styles of project management leadership based on parameters four to six (Table 1) (Turner & Muller, 2005:51). Table 1: Four styles of project manager (Keegan & Den Hartog, 2004:612)
The contingency School
These theories adapt that what makes an effective leader depends on the situation. The pattern it follows consists of: first assessing characteristics of the leader, second assessing the situation concerning key variables and lastly seeking a match between leader and situation. Path-goal theory has deemed popular in contingency school and was created by Fiedler, according to Vlok (2012). This entails the leader assisting the team to discover the course to their goals while helping them in the process. It represents four leadership styles:
• Directive leaders
• Supportive leaders
• Participative leaders
• Achievement-orientated leaders
These are then further matched to either environmental

These leaders are aware of how they think and act and are true to themselves, and they are conscious of how they are perceived by others. Self-awareness and awareness of others are the recurring theme within authentic leadership. Authentic leaders are clear about their own values and moral perspectives, knowledge and strengths and are equally aware of these attributes within others. They are confident, hold a positive view of the future, are resilient and are perceived by others to be of high moral character and place a high importance on the development of employees as leaders. According to Waite etc (2013:486), Wrong and Cummings, have highlighted four underlying components of authentic leadership: (a) self-awareness, (b) unbiased balanced information processing, (c) authentic behaviour or action, and (d) relational
This leadership style is effective because it allows the members to have a say in how the group is conducted. The leader and the members select the activity, share in leadership, and give feedback to each other through their successes and needs (Cole,
Authentic leadership is a reciprocal process because leaders affect members and members influence leaders. Transactional Leadership Theory. This approach emphasizes equitable exchange between the leader and the follower based on honesty and trust.

The leadership theory I would like to reflect on is servant leadership theory. Northhouse (2013) servant leadership theory reflects on similar characteristics as authentic leadership. Northhouse (2013) discussed how empowering and ethical servant leaders are with their associates. The characteristics of servant leadership that is similar to authentic leadership would be conceptualization, building community, healing and empathy. As for the characteristics of the authentic leadership approach, it is listed as establishing trusting relationships with others, understanding the purpose, having strong values in doing the right thing (ethically) and being enthusiastic about their assignment (Northhouse, 2013).
A Project Leader, as opposed to a manager that manages the team by bending it to fit the project, guides from the front and mainly aims to realise the potential of the team by using skills and resources at his/her disposal to achieve the best from the team (Curlee & Gordon, 2011). The complexity theory is furthermore about accepting chaos in some stages of the project life cycle, but in such a manner that allows the project manager a level of individuality to move a project forward. Hence, complexity is about learning to accept certain unknowns with flexibility and grace. (Curlee & Gordon, 2011). A leader who motivates individuals can assist in creating a controlled hurricane that can conquer complex tasks.
Authentic Leadership is a complex process that is tough to describe, there are three main definitions along with two approaches to this leadership style. The first definition describes a focus on the leader and their internal processes, the second is relational and created by leaders and followers together, and the last describes the unfixed nurturing of a leader or the constant development of a leader (Northouse, 2016, p.196). The two approaches concerned with this approach are practical and theoretical, in this philosophy, a theoretical approach is emphasized in this philosophy. The practical approach discusses essential qualities and characteristics whereas the theoretical approach is based on the behavior of leaders; which can be more validly
I would describe Sally’s authenticity of leadership as being very understanding and knowing. Sally was very much guided she knew right from wrong, she let that help her behavior, and she never let any other behaviors control her. Sally used her knowledge and her life experiences to become even more authentic than she even wrote a book. 3. I think it was important for Sally’s leadership to take on the
According to Allio (2012) good leaders require both competence and integrity. Leadership is defined as the accomplishment of a goal through the direction of human assistants (Prentice, 1961). Similarly, leadership is defined as an interaction between two or more members of a group that often involves a structuring or restructuring of the situation and the perceptions and expectations of members (Bass B., 1990). Leaders play important role as they are the one who develop an organizational culture of trust. In a way, they build a foundation of integrity and ethical standards in the organization (Waxler and Higginson, 1990).
Authentic leaders have a positive impact on followers, groups, and organization (Yaacoub, 2016). These leaders can be motivating on one hand and change to another style depending on the condition. Both leadership styles look for ways to partner with people, groups or organization. Servant uses measures to a leaders effectiveness (Reed, Vidaver-Cohet & Colwell, 2011).
In the situation, self-awareness helped Sally develop into the writer and leader she desired to be. “Sally’s leadership began with her own journey of finding herself and accepting her personal authenticity. Through this self-awareness, she grew to trust her personal authenticity.” (pg. 211) 2. How would you describe the authenticity of Sally Helgesen’s Leadership?
The principle reason that motivated me to pursue the MSc Project Management course is the appeal and challenge Project Managers experience in delivering assignments they undertake in their career. The qualification, indeed, lead to very smart and modern careers for graduates who love challenges, creativity, leadership and success. As a graduate of Mathematics, I have cultivated these features in my student life. Now, for my master level of study, I would like to take my chance of attaining formal skills in the area of project management. From my research, I see that Project Management is the application of skills, knowledge and techniques to meet the objectives of a project and stake holder’s expectations.
Self-understanding and Leadership Part 1 Talking about an effective leader, there is no doubt that quite a large numbers of related attributes can be listed. According to the theory which is first propounded by Lussier, R. N. and Achua, C. F. (2010), the five key elements of leadership are about reaction of changes, relation between leaders and followers, influence to others, relationship with people as well as organizational objectives. For instance, an effective leader should have high cognitive competence, great resilience, good trustworthiness and interpersonal communication competence and so on. Besides all these characteristics listed above, self-understanding is also one of the key competence of leadership considering that an authentic
