Every day humans encounter rhetorical situations, yet hardly ever is a heated conversation or debate though of this way. Rhetoric, which is the art of conversation has been used for thousands of years across the world. Rhetorical situations constitute of four elements, the exigence, rhetor, audience, and constraints. All of these are equally the most important elements, because without each other the conversation would make no sense. The action or statement that sparks a discourse, or the exigence is one of the four constituents of a rhetorical analysis. The exigence is usually an event or topic that comes up to start an argument. These may be things such as a bombing, this may possibly create a discussion about the war on terrorism. The audience is anyone who is listening to the discourse or who a writer seems to have in mind (Rhetorical situations and their constituents). This may affect what you say or how you say it. If you are having a discourse with your buddies you may be loud and use vulgar language; however, if you are in a room with professionals you will speak in a polite manner and with a professional tone. Constraints are another complicated aspect of a discourse just as the exigence. Constraints are “limitations on the rhetor” these can be either positive or negative (Rhetorical situations and their constituents). The author can use constraints to gain the upper hand in an argument though sympathy. Such as if I wanted to get a car and my mom said no, I could say “buuuuut mom I have been doing all my chores and haven’t asked for anything recently”. Although this would most likely not work it may sway her opinion. If you choose to bring up constraints that benefit you have a good chance at winning an argument. All four elements of a rhetorical situation are equally as important as each other, although some are more complicated. Without just one of these constituents the discourse would make little to no sense or would completely not happen at all. Rhetorical discourses are a great opportunity to hear others opinions on controversial topics as well as speak your own
The exigence is an obstacle waiting to be done and is the only thing can be modified. Second, you have the audience. The rhetorical audience consists of only the persons who can be influenced by the exchange or discourse.
Every writer has a goal in mind when writing. For some that goal is to entertain, for others, it’s to educate. When writing, authors have many tools or tricks they use. One of the more common tools is rhetoric. There are three main components of a good rhetoric argument, ethos, pathos, and logos.

To make writing less of an endeavor but rather a medium for people who want to express themselves, a writer must be in accordance with the proper rhetorical situation in writing. Rhetorical Situation in Writing are the specific situations a writer must think about for them to appropriately send a message in which the circumstance necessitates. In President Bush’s address to the nation, he uses many rhetorical devices. A rhetorical device is a literary device that is used to persuade the audience to support the argument made. Bush’s address uses Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. They were invented and studied by the famous greek philosopher Aristotle. Ethos appeals to credibility, Logos appeals to logic or reason, and Pathos appeals to the audience’s feelings.

In chapter 1 Jay Heinrichs, the author of the book, to uses examples from his family life to help introduce the central theme. He starts with an example of arguing with his son about toothpaste, Heinrichs’s argument with George reaches a clear resolution unlike some of the other examples given in the text. Heinrichs does this to show readers a way to argue while showing intelligence. Having established the importance of controversy and rhetoric in an everyday setting, Heinrichs states that rhetoric is an “unavoidable a part of life”. This is where he introduces the central idea of the book which is that rhetoric is necessary and unavoidable part of life he goes on to state that
Grant-Davie describes thoroughly the term rhetorical situation and how the development of the definition and its constituents has contributed to the discovery of the motives and responses behind any discourse. The analysis of rhetorical situations could determine the outer or inner influences of the rhetors, the audience, and their particular constraints. Grant Davie supports his claims by using the earlier definitions of scholars and teachers as his foundation. He also addresses his own analysis drawn by life experienced discourses which it also helps the reader understand the causes of rhetorical situations. My definition of rhetoric before the readings was simply: successful written or oral communication with a clear purpose & audience in mind. After completing the readings, I have decided that is not specific enough and does not encompass what rhetoric really is. The readings by Crusus, Channell, and Drucker helped establish a clear relationship between argument, “mature reasoning”, and communication as a mode used to communicate. Both of the readings provided a clearer understanding of argument and communication, key components to rhetoric, but did not change my definition until I read “The Rhetorical Situation” by Bitzer. The idea of a rhetorical situation, provided a clear application of the question: “What is rhetoric?”

Kennedy not only wanted to inform the audience, he wanted to get them on his side of the argument. He wanted to show the audience that the rising steel prices were going to have a negative impact on the nation. To do this Kennedy used some of the rhetoric strategies and tools. He used periodic sentences, anaphora, and diction.
For example, when we write an essay, we need to show how the text convinces us of its position. As a citizen, it is important to use rhetorical analysis in our daily life. It is a great tool to sort out questions about politics and relationship. For example, during the election period, we should use rhetorical analysis to analyze the candidate’s message to critical thinking skill to determine whether or not their words are true.
Rhetoric is a way of speaking in a persuasive way to create an impact on the audience or have them think the same way as the speaker. The three main strategies of rhetoric speech is ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos meaning the speaker is dwelling upon themselves, pathos meaning the speaker is using imagination to create emotion, and logos meaning facts and logic is used by the speaker to persuade the audience. Socrates used logos in a way that helped him exhibit an effective speech to prove which type of knowledge is worth knowing. In spite of this claim, Socrates was truly only showing the court that he really did not know much more than his name.
The structure of media messages is deliberately crafted and packaged to persuade, inform, entertain, and to educate a target audience. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher that created the five canons of rhetoric which includes Arrangement, delivery, memory, style and invention. All media messages have a structure using the five canons of rhetoric analysis of content. Invention Invention is the first principle of rhetoric.
