In the Sixties sexism was a widely accepted part of society but not in modern times. Commercials still stereotype women today but not nearly as much as in the Sixties. In the 1960’s Folgers Coffee commercial, the husband’s attitude towards the wife, Papa Eddie’s interaction with the woman, and the woman’s reaction to the men reveal the sexist attitudes of the time period. The husband’s attitude towards the wife gives an example of how women were perceived at the time. In the Folgers commercial the husband gets angry at the wife for making bad coffee as if the wife’s sole reason for existence revolves around her doing things that would please the husband. The wife’s reaction to the men in the commercial showcases how women were expected to act back in the 1960s. When the husband got upset with the wife for making terrible coffee, insinuating that her only purpose in life is to please him, and that if he is not happy she should feel guilty because it is all her fault. The wife running off immediately to the market to fix the problem so that she can mend the relationship with her husband. The wife’s life is portrayed in a way that suggest that women are supposed to live only to serve their husbands. The commercial also portrays the mentality that the only concerns women have are related to household chores, and that a woman’s whole existence revolves around housework and family. This paints a picture for society of how women are expected to be and portrays a sexist ideal of how women should act in a society that enforces the idea that women only exist for the convenience of others in a heavily male dominated society. The commercial enforces the idea that the man is always right based off of the wife’s interactions with her husband and Papa Eddie. He comes home and does nothing but relax, while the wife handles all the business in the house such as cooking dinner, cleaning the house, and taking care of the kid. In Dave Barry’s, “Lost in the Kitchen”, Barry analyzes his recent Thanksgiving experience and realizes that the stereotypes about men and women in the kitchen are indeed true. Some dogs may end up waiting forever for their owners to come back, but thankfully this pup only had to wait through the night. His owner made the responsible decision to stay at a friend’s house rather than drive under the influence.
Watching the commercial, the intended audience for an adult man with a son. I say that because the main character’s are an old man and his son. This commercial instills values like the past meaning reliving what you loved and also family. It’s not effective because it doesn’t use the Rhetorical Appeals like Ethos and Logos but, it does include Pathos which makes it somewhat good. Pathos is a Rhetorical Appeal that the commercial does portray in many forms.

The first scene in the ad “You make me feel” shows real life women in many different roles they play in their professions, families, communities and the world. Some of the women are shown in their everyday professions such as a musician, waitress, teacher, farmer, doctor, artist, valet parking attendant, baker, marathon runner, Miss America pageant winner, and military women. Other women are shown in the ad with their families spending quality time together, posting yard sales signs, picking pumpkins, farming and caring for their families. They are shown as single mothers, married women and in a relationship with a partner.
No one would think to do a rhetorical analysis on such a humorous popular super bowl commercial. I discussed the author by giving a breakdown on the company and providing statements of how long they've been around and how they have continuously been one of the most popular laundry detergent brands. When talking about the audience I provided some insight in who the primary audience is and how tide switched up from making generally feminine aimed ads. Finally within the text I broke down the main components of Ethos and Pathos in the paper and how it strengthened the ad. At first it took me awhile to understand what to write the paper on, but while watching the Super Bowl I had the idea to select an advertisement from there.
The majority of modern society’s advertising conveys an oppressive message to American women. In advertisement campaigns, women are typically only considered and marketed as beautiful if they fit a very specific mold that society has created. Women who don’t fit this mold of being feminine, thin, and pretty are shamed and encouraged to change. However, it isn’t just the “ugly” women who are shamed in the media. There is a consistent message that runs throughout advertisements that suggests that women are lesser than men, and that they exist solely for the benefit of men.
