FHIL, better known as Florida Hospital Innovation Lab is a center based on the ideals of human centered design through the creation of an innovation. On Tuesday March 28th, I visited FHIL for the first time and went through the design making process with the five steps consisting of: empathy, reframing, ideate, prototyping, and testing. The experience began as people were split into teams of five people, each with a different challenge they’re trying to solve. My group’s challenge was to develop ways to make Rollins more environmentally sustainable. Through experiencing the FHIL design process, my group decided upon solutions to incentivize Rollins students to be more sustainable such as free meals for students/dorms that recycle regularly. …show more content…
In order to make a business venture based on the values of entrepreneurship, one must solve a problem that people have in order to make their lives better. Furthermore, human centered design is directed related to effectuation as the entrepreneur creates ideas based on the challenges that people struggle with and these challenged are solved through these thinking processes. Using empathy gathering, co-creation, innovation, rapid prototyping and testing allow the entrepreneur to assess the challenge in a step by step process which allows the solution to be precise and clear cut due to the concentration on veracity. The ideas of open mind, open heart, and open will and YES AND were conveyed during the FHIL experience and are quite vivid as they represent the importance of being open to change and acknowledging the fact that there’s always more. I will better aspects of my life by being open to other ideas in designing something and realizing that something’s original form can be altered to be more precise and better. Shoreview VA Hospital is one of the VA facilities that solely serves the Miami-Dade County. This county is found in the lower eastern part of Florida, but the facility is found in Homestead, Florida. Nearby, is the Homestead Air Force Base, one of 21 Military bases in Florida (See Appendix A for a map). Demographics. Miami-Dade County, has an estimated population of 2.66 million people according to the U.S Census which makes it the most populous county in Florida.
Background statement: Heritage Valley Medical Center has had a wonderful reputation for providing excellent health care services to their community. Initially, their community was 80% Caucasian, 40% African American, and 5% Hispanic. However, in the last 5 years, the population has changed to more minorities and the whites have moved out to the suburbs. This caused the Center’s occupancy rate to go down 40% because many of their traditional, more affluent, private-pay patients had left the neighborhood. To bring in revenue, they campaigned to bring in more Medicaid patients.
Fact: This class action involves a multi-faceted attack against certain medication and seclusion policies allegedly followed at the May and Austin Units of the Boston State Hospital (Hospital), a state institution for the mentally ill. The named plaintiffs, all either voluntary or involuntary patients at one time or another at these facilities, seek injunctive relief for the class,[1] and award of money damages for themselves. Plaintiffs' basic grievance is that the defendants, all of whom have served on the Hospital staff, maintained policies of forced medication and involuntary seclusion in non-emergency circumstances. Plaintiffs allege that these policies infringed on the constitutional rights of Hospital patients.

1. Describe the problem as told by a health care professional For this interview project, I chose to interview Dr. Shawn Fagan, MD. He is a burn surgeon and intensivist for the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta. Dr. Fagan has is board certified in both surgery and surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery. In 2005, a family friend by the name of Randy Birdsong was a patient at Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital located in San Antonio, Texas. The Veteran Affairs (VA) medical staff was performing surgery on his abdomen. After the surgery, he was notified that there was insufficient space to accommodate his continued care. The V.A. advised him to keep his wound clean with a fresh roll of gauze, and sent him on his merry way. A few days later, Randy was back at the V.A. hospital with a noticeable infection taken place in his abdominal region.
I 've learned while conducting these interviews that both indivuials have similar issues within the healthcare system. one of the biggest issues both interviewees faces was the cost of healthcare and health insurance coverage. One of the interviewees has a chronic illness, and at times has to decide if she wants to purchase her needed medication or to buy groceries for herself and her family. The other interviewee although employed, doesn 't have health insurance coverage because its too costly every month. it seems they 're both appreciative of the fact there is a somewhat healthcare system with health care providers and professionals available to them, but feels its only available if you have health insurance coverage.

Based on this case the cost driver is to properly distribute the direct cost among the different divisions. Dr. Julian would like to control her departments costs by having them distributed fairly among the divisions without affecting the hospital’s reimbursement/revenue. Carroll University Hospital is currently using the standard costing unit, which is based on the cost of bed/day for inpatients. Currently the present cost accounting system that is being used at CUH takes the total direct cost of the departments, then allocates the indirect costs and distributes it among the departments evenly regardless of the actual resources being used in those departments, and without considering that there may be some patients in these divisions that may require more resources than others, this method does not seem to recognize the different activities,
