The world has had a lot of change over time; especially that of the last couple decades. There have been many inventions that have started the growth of new things, but have decreased the use in others. People today never use a home phone or one of those block phones when it’s a normal possession to own in the modern 21st century. With the creation of new technologies that are so easily accessible and portable, it has impacted those creations from the past such as public libraries. Even with the argument whether libraries can stay useful in the next couple years, I believe that this is the chance for libraries to overcome and adapt to this eras new technology and become more relevant in our lives. The first public lending library in the US was created by Ben Franklin way back in the 1730s (Source A). Being around for a few centuries now, libraries have gone through challenges of the changing world around them and are still a key piece to our …show more content…
People nowadays believe that libraries are there to hold books and just act as an old storage place. But they are wrong, as libraries act to be the center of academic help and knowledge, and a massive resource for more than just information for school. Now that public libraries are rapidly improving to combat or stay with the technology being released, it gives the libraries that potential that people think just aren’t there. Originally, people would go to the library to help them in school and for projects, but now they don’t need to leave their home as they have the internet accessible to their phone or laptop at the comfort of their own bed. Through the years, when Franklin sniffed the need for community improvement (which was quite often, frankly), he turned to the Junto. The first of such ideas was a lending library open to every literate person in Philadelphia. The Junto members recruited subscribers to the library who would pay to take out books. At the founding, all of the forty-five books were nonfiction, but soon, the library expanded and took in creative volumes. The motto for the library was "to pour forth benefits for the common good is divine" (qtd in Isaacson, 103).
1. If given the power, I would support and convert the US system into a direct democracy which means the winner of the presidential popular vote would win the presidency. On page 182 in the book, it states that a direct democracy enables all actors with a voice (the ability to vote) to make decisions on the matter at hand. Furthermore, a direct democracy provides voice to those affected by the issue.

The thesis of my paper is clear within the first paragraph. The key points of the essay are developed to support the thesis, with all the key points seeming to be developed thoroughly. However, I think some of the key points would benefit from more evidence from the sources. Originally, the paper was far too long and I had to take some things out to compensate for this, including a few pieces of evidence. Unfortunately, this left the paper lacking evidence in some areas.

Exploring Information Environment The Association of College and Research Libraries, also known as the ACRL, is a division of the broader American Libraries Association (ALA). This division focuses on representing primarily academic libraries and academic librarians, but also includes support staff, and even those with a vested interest in academic libraries. It is important to note that this association is not an elitist one. All academic libraries and their staffs are given due consideration: “ACRL represents librarians working with all types of academic libraries—community and junior college, college, and university —as well as comprehensive and specialized research libraries and their professional staffs” (ACRL History). The division itself
There is great controversy over whether or not libraries should have a mission statement or to let the consumer decided what they want. Although there are pros and cons to each of these theories both are quite useful. Many people view libraries as a useful resource to heighten their education. The author, who has no background in library or information sciences, suggests that it makes fiscal sense to close all libraries and buy everyone an Amazon Kindle Unlimited subscription (Worstall, 2014). What Worstall fails to understand, more than likely because he is not an authority on the subject of libraries, information science, or finance for that matter, is that libraries are not just buildings in which to warehouse books. Instead, they are, as Ranganathan states, living organisms. Moreover, libraries are an integral part of the community in which they are situated and provide that community with many services. A reference librarian provides one such service, and it remains as relevant, if not more so, as it has in previous centuries.
