Shawn, who after having fought and being hurt at the battle of Antietam is chosen by Massachusetts Governor John A. Andrew to do the job. This movie based of some of the real Robert Shawn's writings, gives a realistic view of what Shawn and the members infantry went through as they became members of the army and until the battle of fort Wagner. Movies and Hollywood have captivated our ideas of history whether it being movies such as 300 or my current topic Glory. Movies have profound impact on our historical perception and even though these movies try to stay accurate they still present major inaccuracy. Now in this paper I will be reviewing and detailing the historical validity of the 1989 Civil War blockbuster Glory, the movie is centered on the Massachusetts 54th regiment that was predominately made up of African American free men and their commander Robert Gould Shaw, who was the son of a prominent Abolitionist family in Boston. Shaw was originally was apart of the 7th New York who had aided in the defense of Washington and later join and rise up the ranks in the 2nd Massachusetts.

During the 19th century American had it southern states secede thus causing a civil war between americans and there were 2 sides the Confederates from the south and the Union from the North the war was sparked by the elections of the 16th century. After the Union kind of won the battle of Antietam Lincoln decides to make The Emancipation Proclamation Which freed all the black slaves in the North. Once the Emancipation Proclamation was accepted Lincoln decided to allow African Americans to join the Union Army. This decision ultimately helped the Union in winning the Civil War. When the African Americans were accepted in the Union Army they were put to do labor for the Union and later they were given the opportunity to go fight for their country

Glory The movie Glory is a story about white and black soldiers who are in the North fighting for slavery against slavery in the South and them learning how to love one another. It tells about the different privileges that the white soldiers had as opposed to the black soldiers and what they all had to go through during the war times. There were many racial conflicts that these soldiers had to go through and many people were prejudiced against the 54th regiment because they all had different colored skin. Back then many white people were used to people with different colored skin working as slaves.

Glory tells the story of the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. This was the first military unit made up of black troops organized in the North by the Union government (“54th Regiment”). Commanded by Colonel Shaw, they led the assault against Fort Wagner on Morris Island (“The 54th”). They suffered heavy losses; almost half of their members were killed, wounded, or captured (“The 54th”).

The Emancipation Proclamation was an important act, the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln, allowing the freedom of all in the rebelling territories of the confederacy and allowing Blacks to join in the Union Army. At the beginning of the Civil War, the freed black people was ready to fight with Union, yet they were prevented from doing so. Popular racial stereotypes and discrimination against Blacks in the military contributed to the prevailing myth that Black men did not have the intelligence and bravery necessary to serve their country. By 1862, there was limited amount of White Union enlistment and confederate victories at Antietam forced the U.S. government to reconsider its racist policy.

Slowly he gains respect of the soldiers and the officers by getting them new supplies like shoes, uniforms and refused to take the payment they offered him because the soldiers were going to get paid lower than the white men. Shaw’s leadership skills have changed from the beginning, to a strong and brave leader as he lead his regiment to the final battle to the front line. Glory The movie “Glory” tells the story of the transformation of an oppressed people to proud people. The movie glory tells the history of the 54th Massachusetts infantry. It became the first black regiment to fight in the north in the civil war. Black soldiers, northern freeman, and some escaped slaves made up the Regiment. The leader was General Robert Gould Shaw, the son of Boston abolitionists.

When it comes to policing there is a huge struggle power struggle between individual rights and public order. You want to keep individual rights, but you also want to keep public order while keeping the public safe. It may seem hard to keep the balance between these two, but doing so is of utter importance. Here are some examples of why it can be hard to balance individual rights and public order when dealing with policing.

In the battle scene, the 54th is pinned down and taking massive amounts of enemy fire, and yet none of the soldiers are making any sort of move to fight back. Their comrades are dying all around them, but the men simply lie there in the sand covering their heads. Thus it falls to Colonel Robert Shaw to be the beacon of courage for his men in order to lead them to glory. While the movie is undoubtedly about the struggles of the African American men of the 54th, it cannot be overlooked that at every turn they require guidance and mercy from their benevolent white colonel. It would be unrealistic for a company of African American men to accomplish what they did in the Civil War without Shaw’s help, but it is still worth noting that in some ways this feels largely like movies where the white man comes to save the savages (e.g. Dances With Wolves, Avatar, The Last Samurai).

He uses the letters sent by contemporary Col. Robert G. Shaw to his wealthy family back in Massachusetts as the historical foundation of the movie while imagining conversations between characters. Through Col. Shaw’s eye, we are able to uncover the birth, the development, and the end of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, the first colored regiment fought in Civil War. Just like any other war movie, Glory has several battle scenes that were unpleasantly bloody, yet they managed to stay authentic.
