Fight Club Film Analysis

The Great Gatsby and Fight Club both depict similar themes in which I will be discussing throughout this essay. Both the film and the novel have many comparisons which can be made within the text. Although the novel Fight Club and the film The Great Gatsby were made several years apart they both have similar concepts and depict a variety of themes including The American Dream which I will be. Not only will I be examining the degeneration of the American Dream but also how male and female relationships work and the symbolisation of women and how they represent the American Dream in both Fight Club and The Great Gatsby. Straight Outta Compton is a 2015 drama film that was directed by Felix Gary Gary and produced by original N.W.A members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, as well as many others. In 1987, five young men put their anger and frustration about life through music in one of the most dangerous places in America, Compton, California. Straight Outta Compton tells a story of how these young men stood up to authorities who tried to keep them down. In doing so, they formed the most dangerous group called N.W.A. They use their music to expose the truth about life growing up in the projects.

Everyone knows that the “First rule of fight club: You do not talk about fight club. Second rule of Fight Club: you do not talk about Fight Club.” In the movie, Fight Club, an unnamed character plays the part of a depressed insomniac battling to find peace within himself. This unnamed character joins forces with a man, Tyler Durden, to create an underground “paramilitary” rebellion club to have something to get their minds off of the reality of their miserable lives. This “Fight Club,” later called “Project Mayhem,” causes terror to the world around them.

In the famous movie “Gangs of new York”, directed by Martin Scorsese, is a movie about multiple struggles and rivalries taking place in a New York city town, called the Five Points. This movie presents a story between a boy seeking revenge against the antagonist- Bill the butcher- and a portrayal of the various gangs living in the Five Points. Gangs of New York is historically accurate in the way it interprets the New York city riots, the characterization of the gangs in The Five Points, and the hardships of the Irish immigrants.

Ethical challenges are of universal span; many people including police officers are confronted with the opportunities for violating organizational rules and norms daily. Most of the stories about police officers in the media, including Cops and Criminal Minds, are about respectable police officers, but the intense 2001 movie Training Day is not. Alonzo Harris, a veteran police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), is training Jake Hoyt, a rookie officer on his first day with the narcotics unit. Harris’ character is an example of police officers’ potential for corruption. For instance, when Harris misuses the police authority and uses some fake arrest warrant seizing millions of dollars from a former LAPD veteran, now an informant

In this scene, lighting is used where a shot reflects on eves face to the farmer in the car on the farm showing how far they are. The scene continues where the lighting used appears too bright and somehow blinding to show the time of day the scene is taking place and the emptiness of the field and the only part left out is Thornhill thus focus is drawn to him and this launches the audience into the attack where the lighting makes it easy to know that he is alone in the barren land which makes him vulnerable and the scene captivating. The editing is utilized in the film where quick and intense scenes are made to be real fast in pace which creates suspense. Sound is also used where the music in the background moves in sync with scenes of suspense where it turns loud and fast making the audience aware of the impending danger (Pernoud, 2015).

The use of background light was an important focus in this picture, there was less attention to lighting the actors faces but in almost every frame there is well placed background light often combined with a moving light source. Repetition was also evident within the visual composition of the frame, the actors were rarely positioned within the center of the frame but always to the left or the right with a light source covering them from behind. Ridley Scott perfectly matches colorful high key light with low key lights creating impeccable contrast, this lighting used could be described as a modern Citizen Kane style. Throughout life we are told to express our individuality and swim against the stream of the general population to put emphasis on the characteristics that make us, in short, individuals. Cherishing what makes an individual special and different is what establishes roots in creativity and self expression, however there is a forced false sense of comradery in today’s society that takes the form of involvement with the masses; peer pressure forces many people to fall into the mold of an average character. The Academy award winning film, “The Incredibles” displays the themes of expressing one’s true self and special qualities, and in contrast repression by society to fit a basic mold. These themes are elaborated on through the development of the main characters and expressed further through the supporting roles and their dialogue and endeavors.

The use of contrast and the play with light and darkness is fascinating. It has a great psychological effect on the audience. The Don Corleone’s office is submerged in darkness and the characters in the scene come in and out of the light, thereby directing the focus onto them. Tim Burton 's use of this helps show the contrast of the insider and outsider world. When the viewer is watching they get a sense of suspense and start to second guess whether or not they should trust the outsider. In Edward Scissorhands Burton uses a high-key low-key light contrast when Peg is in her car and sees Edward 's house in her side mirror. When the viewers are watching they get a frightened sense and wonder whether or not Edward or whomever is in the house will

This is where brilliant editing and cinematography adds a sense of shared experiences that Henry cannot comprehensively convey alone. The time stamps throughout the series of events not only allow audiences to gain a sense of Henry’s frantic pace, but of the time constraint he is under as well. Being equipped with this knowledge helps us feel the pressure Henry does. The fast paced rock music in the background supplements well into the hectic atmosphere Scorsese impressively creates. The series of scenes of Henry’s paranoia makes excellent use of a multitude of elements, specifically when Henry is looking for the helicopter while driving.

In David Fincher’s, dramatic film “Fight Club”, Fincher develops satire to explain the masculinity of the main characters throughout the movie. Being masculine and or having masculinity, means qualities traditionally ascribed to men, as strength and boldness. Typically, men are seen to be strong, able to fight, have a large frame, and or be fearless. Men such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris are seen to society as Masculine men. However, some develop their masculinity later than others.

The first shows lighter, brighter shades like grass and leaves. During the war green color is presented by more “gloomy” hues like military uniform or a rocket in the night sky that Doss saw in his nightmare. The film often shows characters’ faces in close up; these frames constitute a majority of the movie. Camera focuses on characters’ faces and moves slightly following their heads’ motions. This approach makes viewers focus on people’s expressed emotions and interactions rather than their environment.
