In the journal article titled “The Effect of Facial Makeup on the Frequency of Drivers Stopping for Hitchhikers”, (Psychological Reports) the main researchers Nicolas Gueguen and Lubomir Lamy (2013) further examine the physical implications makeup has on indiviuals. Specifically, their article focuses on a study they conducted to assess whether a woman wearing make-up is more likely to get picked up when hitchhiking as opposed to a woman wearing no make-up based on the fact that cosmetic use increases physical attractiveness. The hypotheses posed by the researchers states that “female hitchhikers” wearing full “facial makeup” will have a “positive medium effect on male motorists’ behavior” as well as “no statistically significant effect on …show more content…
The purpose of this textual analysis is to further examine the experiment and its results in order to assess the project’s validity. I will summarize, analyze, and evaluate the project carried out by Gueguen and Lamy in order to critique the overall results.
Influenced by the research gathered from various published sources, Gueguen and Lamy (2013) came to believe that a “pretty face”, or a women with a face of full make-up can have more impact on people’s behavior than a women with a “bare face” who wears no make-up. To test if this was true, Gueguen and Lamy decided to see what kind of attention a female hitchhiker with a full face of make-up would receive compared to a female hitchhiker with a no make-up on her face. First, the researchers gathered the confederates for this experiment (Gueguen &Lamy, 2013). “Four Caucasian women” between the ages of 20 and 22 volunteered and were selected due to the fact that they were rated as having “average physical attractiveness” in a previous study by “24 male students” (Gueguen &Lamy, 2013, p. 99). The selected women volunteers, or confederates, were also brunettes

The total number of motorists that stopped for the hitchhikers was 1,600. Out of that total, 959 were men and 641 were women (Gueguen &Lamy, 2013). The results in this study stated 24% of men and 10% of women stopped for a confederate with a full face of make-up (Gueguen &Lamy, 2013). Only 15% of men and seven percent of women motorists stopped for a confederate with no make-up on their face (Gueguen &Lamy, 2013). These results were enough to conclude the hypothesis of Gueguen and Lamy (2013) to be accurate. The purpose of this entire study, according to the main researchers, was to “measure the behavioral effects women’s facial make-up” can have on other individuals in a setting other than a laboratory (Gueguen &Lamy, 2013, p.97). The introduction of this article mentions how a plethora of research has been accumulated throughout several studies that support the idea that facial cosmetics have the ability to increase a women’s attractiveness. It has been noted both men and women will perceive a lady’s appearance to be improved, and her motifs positive when wearing make-up. This notion has only been tested in controlled laboratory environments, and it is this precise quality that influenced Gueguen and Lamy
After reading “Why Looks Are the Last Bastion of Discrimination” by Deborah L. Rhode and “The Makeup Tax” by Olga Khazan, both readings focus on the concerns of appearance discrimination. Appearance discrimination can be validated, yet it cannot. For instance, it is valid to appearance discriminate an individual when an employer is interviewing him or her because it is the first quality employers examine. An employer is often likely to not hire an individual if he or she comes into the interview wearing informal attire, in contrast to an individual showing up to the interview with formal clothing. Nonetheless, it is not okay to validate appearance discrimination when it comes to an individual’s weight.

In my novel, “Uglies” the protagonist is Tally. Near the beginning of the story she shares her desperate wants of being a pretty, and even more so because she feels all alone without her best friend. She even breaks one of the most important rules, which is to stay inside Uglyville, but she can’t help her desire to see Peris again. Fortunately she didn’t get caught The antagonists in my novel, is a group called Special Circumstances.
In the year 2105, the American culture is a society that thrives off of the obsession of materialism and gaining the approval of others. Culture tells us to worry about how many “likes” we get on a picture of ourselves or the number of comments that tell us how beautiful or handsome we are. Beauty will fade, but people are willing to do anything that they can to preserve it forever. From plastic surgeries for a thiner nose, to silly home remedies for a wrinkly face, we won’t stop until perfection is achieved. The writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne in the nineteenth century did not differ much from the American culture that we see today.
It is never too late to fall in love for the first time in your life. Saving Face is a 2004 movie directed by, Alice Wu, is about an American theatrical release featuring an Asian American lesbian couple. One character that stands out in the story is, Vivian Shing, (Lynn Chen). This character known as Vivian Shing can be described as: careerist, romantic, sex-maniac. Vivian Shing, can be described as a careerist for two reasons. One example of, Vivian Shing, being characterized as a careerist is during the drama climax when, Vivian Shing, is offering a four year contract with the Paris Opera Ballet.
In the essay What Meets the Eye, Daniel Akst argues that look or beauty does matter in the daily life, that is, people’s life can be largely influenced or even controlled by look. Through reading Akst’s essay, I completely understand how people have different perspectives of others, as many people pay attention to and worry about how they look in the daily life. And people tend to judge others by their beauty or looks to a large extent. Akst’s ideas quite conform to and reinforce Paglia’s points that pursuing and maximizing one’s attractiveness and beauty is a justifiable aim in any society, and that good surgery discovers reveals personality. Both of them hold the idea that beauty plays an important role in people’s life and it is significant to enhance one’s beauty and attractiveness.

Prof. Brand 1 November of 2015 The Beauty Side Effects on Society Many people can be hypocrites and say that there is nothing wrong with society, but that would be such an untruthful statement to make. In fact, one of the most outrageous ideas that people tend to live by is what the human being like to call beauty.
Emotions and insecurities of women are played with in cosmetic commercials. By the end of the commercial, many women’s only hope is to look as perfect as the beautiful women in the
What is the most pressing issue facing society today? In The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison argues that it is beauty standards, even calling physical beauty “the most destructive idea[] in the history of human thought” (122). While this may seem outrageous in a world of terrorism, global warming, homelessness, and hunger, beauty standards and the feelings of inferiority that stem from them affect everybody. In severe cases, these feelings can even manifest themselves deeply inside of a person and lead to eating disorders, depression, anxiety, self-hatred, and even suicide. In The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison uses the insecurities of the female characters to demonstrate that beauty standards are a danger to society, as they perpetuate racism and self-hatred.
In a society that is heavily influenced by mass media, women are repeatedly compartmentalized into unrealistic, and often degrading standards of appearance and sexuality. Doris Bazzini’s research on magazines and Caroline Heldman’s blog explores themes related to a woman’s appearance, while Jessica Valenti elaborates on the concept of virginity in her essay titled, “The Purity Myth”. Despite the diversity in scope when it comes to womanhood, there is a numerous set of expectations that a female must fit in order to be “ideal”. However, this checklist is so specific and debasing that it renders the criteria useless. The three main pre-requisites in being the ideal woman include physical attractiveness, sexual accessibility, and purity.
Your decisions to comply with society’s view of “beauty” are no longer subconscious, but rather are more conscious-driven decisions. Barbie’s slender figure remains idolized; however, it has evolved from a plastic doll to a self-starving model that is photo-shopped on the pages of glossy magazines. You spend hours in front of a mirror adjusting and perfecting your robotic look while demanding your parents to spend an endless amount of money on cosmetics and harmful skin products to acquire a temporary version of beauty. Consider companies such as Maybelline, which have throughout the ages created problematic and infantilizing campaigns and products for women. More specifically consider the “Baby Lips” product as well as the company slogan, “maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s Maybelline,” that reiterates the male notions of beauty to which women are subjected.
The results found that the women deemed thee most attractive went on a second date. This indicates that the men were more attracted to the most attractive women, without taking their own appearance into
33 percent of the women studied were concerned with appearance associated with aging such as sagging, wrinkles, and weight changes. However, only 21 percent of the men were concerned with how age affected their appearance (Olson, 2015). The double standard is also seen when observing the fact of women wearing make-up on a daily basis. The idea of appearance and growing old puts pressure on girls at a young age to wear make-up to enhance their physical appearance at all ages. Men do not wear make-up, but women will use makeup to disguise physical features associated with age.
When interested in someone, people tend to rate that person highly not only on their appearance, but on other traits as well due to one observable trait (Norman, 2013). According to the halo effect, “a person’s favorability of personality attributions increases monotonically with physical attractiveness” (Lucker, 1981). Many other aspects of personality are rated based upon physical attractiveness and according to a study, a woman’s femininity, sexiness, and happiness is strongly related to her physical attractiveness (Lucker, 1981). If you find someone attractive, you are most likely going to hope that they have a personality that matches their appearance. Therefore, we contribute
Abstract—Facial Sketches are most widely used in law enforcement agencies for identification and apprehension of suspect which may involve in several criminal activities. If the photographs of the suspect is store in the mug shot data base then the identity of the suspect is possible but in most of the cases that it is a possibility that the photographs of the suspect is not available then two methods are used first is forensic sketch and second is composite sketch software. The sketch used in investigations are either drawn by expert artist (forensic sketch) or created with the help of computer software (composite software sketches), the forensic sketch is drawn by expert artist by following the verbal description provided by an eyewitness
