Some people say love hurts but can it kill? In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet two young lovers from feuding families are willing to risk everything to be together. However, their love story ends in a tragic manner with the death of both Romeo and Juliet. In Romeo and Juliet, the adults are responsible for the deaths.
In the play Romeo and Juliet, the adults are the ones responsible for the tragic deaths of the teenagers. One person who is responsible for their deaths is Lord Monatgue. In the story, Lord Montague is feuding with the Capulets and has been for years. In the Prologue of Romeo and Juliet, it said
“Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,”
This quote reveals that Lord Montague is stubborn because instead of resolving this feud he keeps on trying to fight the Capulets. He develops the conflict in the play because he failed to put an end to this hatred, and as a result, their children suffered. This shows that the adults are mostly responsible for the deaths of Mercutio, Tybalt, Paris, Romeo, and Juliet because if the adults had resolved their differences, Romeo and Juliet would not have had to keep their love a secret, and they would not have had to take such drastic measures to be together.

The Nurse encourages the relationship between Romeo and Juliet while fully knowing that they can’t be together. In Act 2, Scene 5, it said "Then hie you hence to Friar Laurence' cell. / There stays a husband to make you a wife." This quote reveals that the Nurse is short-sighted . She doesn’t think about the long-term consequences of her actions. She allowed them to get married which caused many problems in the story. If the Nurse had acted more responsibly Romeo and Juliet wouldn’t have gotten married which would ultimately lead to their
The Nurse helped out Juliet when her Parents could not. “As I told you my young lady bade me inquire you out; what she bade me say, I will keep to myself”(Act II.II.148-149). The Nurse has offered to keep the secret of the marriage between the two young ones and she will not tell anyone about it. After the Nursze comes back from visting Romeo she finds ways to not tell Juliet the good news instead she starts talking about other things, the Nurse also knows how delighted juliet will be once when she finds out about the wedding “Your love says, like an honest gentleman, and a courteous, and a kind,...where is your mother?”(Act II.II.55-57). The day of Mercutio and Tybalt 's death she did not think Romeo would do such a thing, and now her thoughts about Romeo have changed instead she thinks Romeo would end up hurting her young lady.
This goes against what she originally thought. This causes Juliet to be alone because the relationship ended between her and the person closest to her. Without the nurse juliet made poor choices with the Friar. In conclusion, the nurse is one of the major causes of Romeo and Juliet’s
The nurse also helps send messages between Romeo and Juliet concerning their marriage while she knew the Capulets wants Juliet to marry Paris. Friar Lawrence is also at fault, because he agreed to marry the two lovers without the consent of the parents. In the time period of the play, parents usually had a part in their kids marriage. The friar didnt think about the marriage, because if he did, he would’ve known that Juliet was supposed to marry Paris and that Romeo was in love with Rosaline a few hours before. He should’ve given them time t know each other and
In particular, after Romeo’s unwanted arrival at the Capulet party, Tybalt, the cousin of Juliet, expressed his enmity towards the Montagues by commanding “This, by his voice, should be a Montague./ Fetch me my rapier, boy.” (Shakespeare 1.5.53-54). Tybalt’s initial reaction to a Montague is to draw his sword and fight, exhibiting his obvious hatred towards Romeo. Lord Capulet had expressed his want of peace between the families in the past, if that had been settled, the future events would not have arisen. On the other hand, Tybalt ruined said chances of peace by slaying Mercutio, which had produced Romeo’s want for Tybalt’s life.
Dustin Crosland The Blame for Romeo & Juliet Tragedy The tragic story of Romeo and Juliet is full of grief, sorrow, anger, and woe. We often expect our parents to help and guide us with these emotions, however this is not the case in Romeo and Juliet. This is why the families are to blame for the tragic ending of Romeo and Juliet due to the feud and the relationships between Romeo/Juliet and their parents. The feud between the Montague’s and Capulet’s probably started with their ancestors long ago, but it has kept going.
This mood of his is going to bring bad news unless someone smart and fixes this" (Romeo & Juliet 1.1 125-135). This supports the claim that the Montagues are also responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Instead of checking up on their own child, they assign it to someone else. When they told Mercutio to check up on Romeo, it was not with the right intentions, they did it so rumors would not spread about the family. The Montagues made it quite difficult for Romeo since he was not able to communicate with them on an emotional level.
This responsibility can be seen in Lord Capulet saying, "O brother Montague, give me thy hand" (page 105, line 307). This quote highlights the moment of realization that the feud has caused the tragic deaths of their children.. The two families' feud was the main cause of their children dying, the families' influence on their children's behavior and choices, mixed with arranged marriages had a big impact on how the story ended. The families' inability to reconcile and their continued feud ultimately make them partly responsible for the deaths of Romeo and
The nurse’s willingness to go along with the schemes that Romeo and Juliet were involved with was dangerous. While doing so isn’t inherently dangerous, in the long-term allowing Romeo and Juliet to advance their relationship in part got them killed. Furthermore, Nurse could have possibly talked Juliet out of having a relationship with Romeo. Juliet would trust her opinion, and the argument that a Montague and Capulet can’t mix is quite strong. Along with that, Nurse eventually tries to do exactly that, but it is too late and it just upsets Juliet without solving anything.
Two young lovers from feuding families die tragically in the play of Romeo and Juliet. While it might seem that their actions caused their deaths, a closer look shows a deeper level of responsibility with Juliet's parents. An example of this is, Lady Capulet is furious with Juliet for refusing to marry Paris, saying "I would the fool were married to her grave!" (3.5, 154). The parents' influence and decisions play a significant role in Romeo and Juliets death.
There are many characters that contributed to the tragic acts of love and suicide in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but who is the most to blame? In the famous play, we have two families, the Montagues and the Capulets, who have been feuding with each other for many years. Romeo, from the Montague family, and Juliet, from the Capulets, have fallen in love. Due to the distasteful acts from each side, their children must go to great lengths to keep their love a secret.
The Nurse and Lady Capulet with for Juliet wish for Juliet to get married so the Nurse says, “Go, girl, seek happy nights to happy days. ”(I.iii 105). Due to the nurse pushing Juliet so much to get married, Juliet immediately fell for Romeo and was a very easy catch. Thanks to the nurse’s desire for Juliet t get married, Juliet fell in love even though she was not interested in marriage and to please the nurse, she got married. If it weren’t for the nurse being so pushy, Romeo and Juliet may have never fell in love meaning that they wouldn’t have had suicidal thoughts for each
The Nurse is to Blame for Juliet's Predicament in Romeo and Juliet Everyone is faced with a difficult situation sometime in their life where the two different choices will result in totally different outcomes. A situation where once a decision is made they can’t go back. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet are from feuding families. They meet, fall in love, and get married with help from Juliet’s nurse and Friar Laurence.
Regarding Romeo and Juliet’s marriage, Friar believes it will end the family feud and the Nurse wants Juliet to marry Paris and to respect her family’s wishes after Romeo gets banished. Also, the Nurse is more honest and straight forward than the Friar. Friar usually does his herb practice
Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, the Nurse and Friar Laurence played similar roles, both acting as mentors to the young couple. The hatred and tension between the Montagues and Capulets resulted in Romeo and Juliet’s marriage being kept a secret. They had no other choice then to confide their love for one another to the Nurse and Friar Laurence. Romeo and Juliet had warring parents who were not extremely involved in their everyday lives, therefore, the Nurse and Friar Laurence acted as parental figures toward them, guiding them through complicated situations to the best of their ability. These two characters wanted the best for the newlywed couple; however, both contributed to the tragic ending of Romeo and Juliet, making some of their guidance useful and some of it useless.
Lastly, Shakespeare uses Romeo and Juliet to show true love. Nurse shows parental love to Juliet throughout the play. Despite being a servant to the Capulet household, she has a role equivalent to that of Juliet’s mothers and regards Juliet as her own. Even with the fact that Nurse is not the birth mother of Juliet, she still treats Juliet like a daughter. Nurse cares about Juliet and wants her to be happy and find success.”
