The 1920s, a time when money was abundant. Wealthy family's always wanted to impress others rather than living their own life. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby Jay Gatsby’s great American dream was to control the truth in which he lives his life, and keep his option open. The reason why truthfulness and options are mandatory for the happiness for Gatsby is because he could not be happy if he is addicted to something or someone. One reason Gatsby is unable to be happy is because he is not truthful. One way that Gatsby presents a lack of truthfulness is in the background stories that he tells to everybody about him. One way that Gatsby presents option in the book is at the end of the party Gatsby invites Nick over the next day to go on the hydroplane, “And don’t forget we're going up in the hydroplane tomorrow morning, at nine o’clock” (Fitzgerald 53). This shows that Gatsby is trying to impress Nick by showing him that he is rich and can do anything that he wants. Gatsby is also trying to suck in Nick so that later on he would ask Daisy to meet Gatsby at Nick’s house. For instance, when Jordan tells Nick that “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (Fitzgerald 78). Here, Gatsby’s only option and choice that he has in the book is to impress Daisy and get her to love him again. He would do anything for the happiness of others like Daisy. Next, before Gatsby became rich, he used to be in the military and he meets Daisy 5 years ago in Kentucky. There they fell in love, Gatsby took her out to give her a kiss, “He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, this mind would never romp again like the mind of god” (Fitzgerald 110).
