A trophy is a tangible object, durable reminder of a specific achievement, and serves as a recognition or evidence of merit. In the epic poem Beowulf, Beowulf battle three monsters he uses different techniques, strategies, weapons and methods to defeat them, and in the end of the battle he obtains different trophies each time. The trophies Beowulf attains were assurance to king Hrothgar and his people that Beowulf would and could keep the people safe and that they could trust him with their safety. The trophies that Beowulf acquire were boosts of confidence for Beowulf himself as well, with each battle he became more confident in himself and his strategies. Given that trophies shows, you are probably the best and that you have the ability to be great at something and that is why Beowulf collected trophies from his victims to show the people he is the best and a reminder for himself to never give up even when things don’t seem that they will change. In Beowulf’s first battle he battles a half man half beast, he was a little naïve with the strength of Grendel, because he uses his bare hands but in the end he ends up defeating the beast with his bare hands by ripping off his arm …show more content…

In the battle with Beowulf readers only see the perspective from Grendel and how hard Beowulf was to fight and Beowulf ends up with the arm of the heinous creature. In the battle with Grendel’s mother, he brings a sword in which kills and break the spell she has upon her and he collects her head. In his last battle dragon he wears armor and brings a sword to kill the dragon and obtains treasure. Each trophy more significant than the last and more respect from the people in the land of the Danes. These trophies were important because with each one gained the more respect and admiration Beowulf received, and it proved that Beowulf was dependable and he wouldn’t back away when things were going
