Self-sacrifice is the act of forsaking one's personal interests or well-being for the sake of others. When we love someone, we place the other person's interests and needs before our own as we prioritise their happiness over our own. Hence, loving someone truly requires self-sacrifice. This essay will be looking at The Great Gatsby, authored by F S Fitzgerald, and Cartagena, authored by Nam Le. There are several instances in which an individual self-sacrifices in the interests of another person they love and care for. Regardless of whether it is love for a family member, a lover or even a friend, self-sacrifice is inevitable and necessary.
Self-sacrifice out of familial love is displayed clearly in Cartagena where Ron sacrifices his childhood

Even though they were not officially lovers, from the foreshadowing of "[a]s for Claudia, we used to go together..." (Le 2008, p. 64). It is implied that they had an intimate and slightly romantic relationship that might have grown if Ron had not died. We see Claudia sacrificing her safety for Ron in Cartagena by accompanying him to look for El Padre (Le 2008, p. 64). Also, the imagery evoked from “She is small, and soft, and alone” (Le 2008, p. 95) and “She has gathered her voice with effort" (Le 2008, p. 96) gives us the sense that she is vulnerable and weak but sacrifices her safety to give Ron as much support as she can. Self-sacrifice for a lover can be seen more clearly in The Great Gatsby, most evidently from Gatsby's love for Daisy. Gatsby sacrifices his morality and identity because he finds wealth and social status crucial in winning the love and approval of Daisy. Hence, he sacrifices anything undesirable which is everything about poor James Gatz and fabricates "...a [p]latonic conception of himself..." (Fitzgerald 1925, p. 91) losing his real self and becoming morally corrupted. Unable to control his obsessive desire to have Daisy, he cares little about the means by which he acquires the money to marry her. He associates with known criminals such as Myer Wolfsheim, appears to be involved with bootlegging (Fitzgerald 1925, p. 124). Finally, he lies about himself and his family to enlist …show more content…
One such example is Ron's galado in Cartagena, where they decide what is best for Ron and P147 “...made a choice not to tell [him]” (Le, p. 147) "...did not want to tell you...if you were in hiding, and did not already know, and there was no need...” (Le, p. 160). We know that this friendship is a mutual one as Ron sacrifices himself in order to protect the people around him. This is evident from the diction 'basilica' (Le, p. 139), 'church' (Le, p. 148) and 'sacred' (Le, p. 164) which creates the image that El Padre's room resembles a church, Ron going there symbolises he is the sacrifice to protect his loved ones. “...the moon...looks like a huge yellow magnet.” (Le, p. 164) The comparison of the moon to a magnet evokes the image of Ron being pulled closer towards heaven which foreshadows his impending sacrificial death. The 'crucifixion' (Le, p. 140) most famously done to Jesus Christ, who was executed because he sacrificed his life for humanity parallels Ron's sacrifice for the people around him he loves. Furthermore, “wooden planks creak under my weight..." (Le, p. 140), implies the burden of ensuring the safety of his loved ones. It is evident from “...pull it out, hard” (Le, p. 170) that Ron was prepared and not hesitant about sacrificing his life in order to protect his loved ones. This sacrifice is greatest as Ron is sacrificing the most priceless and irreplaceable thing he owns. We can
But Manami had to let the guards take him because family is more important so she had to sacrifice Yujiin. “Wait” he shouts. Everyone freezes, Father, Grandfather, Mother, even the other people in line. “What are you hiding” he asks me. Father looks at me then Mother.
Willa Cather author of [O Pioneer!] gives us examples of self-sacrifice with love, family and yourself. This theme is based of four fortifying characters named, Alexandra, Frank, Marie, and Emil. Wonder what my reasoning is for having these four characters, set upon this subject self-sacrifice? The one I am going to point out now is Alexandra, only because Alexandra has to make a sacrifice between her brothers Oscar and Lou. The brothers is trying to take away of have the part of the land that Alexandra owns.
The denotation of loyalty is the state or quality of being loyal; faithfulness to commitments or obligations. Loyalty can be described as remaining true to a certain thing or person. To be loyal is to have a faithful, unswerving allegiance. As proven by The Great Gatsby, The Crucible, and The Grapes of Wrath, loyalty is a strong love for someone or something. Loyalty being a strong love for something is shown in The Great Gatsby.
Most of the time sacrifices are driven by some type of love, strength or necessity. It is done by giving up something good for the better, whether for yourself or, another person. In the real world, the idea of selfless sacrifice is shown through the soldiers that fight for their country. Not only does this idea appear in the real world, but also the literary world where one character’s act of courage to make a sacrifice becomes an important variable in the novel. One such novel is Veronica Roth’s Allegiant.
In our world it is hard to indicate whether it is genuine when an individual is treated in a kind matter or being deceived in order to get exploited for something in one’s possession. It is quite unfortunate that in this world, homo sapiens use a gift such as kindness in order to deceive and get whatever they desire, instead of being genuinely kind to one another. A person should not have to doubt the truthfulness behind someone’s kindness towards them. The readers of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby experience this false goodness and deception, through the false belief that Jay Gatsby is a kind hearted soul, with a pure and white soul; Contrary to that false belief, Gatsby is in truth, foolish, pathetic and a man who repeatedly sin and prove he is not
Gerard Way once said, “ Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary “. This quote says that heroes are those people who struggle in their lives, work hard and make themselves extraordinary. Published in 1925, The Great Gatsby is a classic piece of American fiction. It is a novel of luxury and tragedy, noted for the way Fitzgerald captured a cross-section of American society. F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel,The Great Gatsby, follows Jay Gatsby, a man who just wants one desire in his life: to be reunited with Daisy Buchanan, the love he lost five years earlier.
In the novel, Gatsby spent five years searching, thinking, and wondering if he would ever see Daisy come to the lavish parties he had thrown. In the earlier stages of the book, Nick Caraway, an old friend of Daisy, has Gatsby trying to befriend him to get closer to her. After many days of getting to know Nick, Gatsby is able to persuade him to invite Daisy over for tea, and instead of it being with Nick, Gatsby will be there with her. Sacrifices of time in The Great Gatsby can be related to the sacrifices that were made in Destino. In Destino, a woman makes plenty of sacrifices of her time to try to win over a man who is more focused on pursuing his dream.
The novel The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and published the 10th of may 1925, revolves around the main character Jay Gatsby as well as Nick Caraway. All of Nick’s supposed friends are very self-centered and greedy. I believe that the characters in the novel personify greed. The novel is told through narration from the character Nick Caraway.
The Roaring Lack of Morality in the 20s Morals were not thought of as a strict moral code during the roaring twenties, and many people found them rather irrelevant. Those whom threw parties, cheated, and lied, were those who were happiest during these times. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, paints a picture of the 1920s by expressing many themes: the need for wealth, the want for love, and the act of betrayal in marriage through the Modern Era.
His number one dream was to be able to reunite with Daisy so they could fall in love again and live a new life together. Since Daisy already achieved this dream with her husband Tom, there lies no hope for Gatsby no matter how much he pushed. Gatsby made many sacrifices by spending lots of money preparing parties and sending people to search for Daisy to attend. There is also the amount of time he spent waiting for her to submit to his advances that ultimately went unrecognized. Gatsby's biggest sacrifice for Daisy was taking the blame for murder when truly Daisy was to blame.
Sacrifices can come in many different forms and be made for many different reasons. The biggest sacrifice that stood out to me was from Hans when he sold his cigarettes for Liesel to get her books for Christmas. He sacrificed cigarettes to make Liesel happy and in doing so showed the deeper understanding of the theme
Gatsby is a very good example for this theme and his actions show just how far he is willing to go to get what he wants. Before the war Gatsby was in love with daisy but he was poor and she moved on by marrying tom who was wealthy. But when Gatsby gets back and learns this and he does everything he possible could to become rich in the hopes of attracting daisy and making
Characters throughout The Great Gatsby present themselves with mysterious and questionable morals. Affairs, dishonest morals, criminal professions, weak boundaries and hypocritical views are all examples of immorality portrayed in The Great Gatsby. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, lies and mischief fill the lives of many and significantly damage numerous relationships. First, Jay Gatsby's whole life is consumed into a massive lie. His personality traits set him apart from others and the attention he accumulates motivates him to falsely portray his life.
In the book The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald portrays and image of love versus infatuation. The relationships between the characters shows the struggle of an emotional connection in a world driven by societal pressures and money. Gatsby’s and Daisy’s relationship with each other is intertwined with each other’s love and lust, and is complicated with their other relationships, such as Daisy’s and Tom’s marriage. Gatsby is the “fool” in love throughout this whole endeavor and his week with Daisy, because of his constant search for love to fill the void in his life that no amount of success can. Gatsby’s complete infatuation with Daisy started out with them meeting five years back, and surfaced into a love affair.
In The Great Gatsby, Tom sacrifices the marriage he has with Daisy by pursuing an affair with Myrtle Wilson. However, it can be argued how big of a sacrifice it is that he made as in the 1930s, it was common for upper class men to have a mistress as well as a wife, and it is suggested that Daisy is aware of the affair but remains with Tom anyway. Tom’s physical power is exhibited through ‘“Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!”
