At the time of this book mental institutes were horrible places where people would be abused and treated like animals. Also if George didn’t get there before Curley would have shot Lennie in the stomach. If Lennie got shot in the stomach that would cause a lot of pain and Lennie getting shot in the back of the head he didn’t feel anything. It was for the best when George shot Lennie.

This caused his future to go downhill since he would face the consequences of being killed by those who cared for her or facing jail time. George wanted Lennie to die peacefully which caused him to shoot Lennie in the back of the head before anyone else could reach him and make him suffer. George killed Lennie out of his belief that Lennie would be happier this way, which makes it acceptable.

This is true especially in the 1920’s, in which the novel Of Mice and Men takes place. Take Lennie Small for example, a large and hefty man, who has a mental disability. He, as a character, is blamed for the heinous act of murdering the antagonist’s wife, whose name is never revealed. It is true that Lennie does fracture her neck, but he does so without knowing.

In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck many hard decisions were made. In this novel two Characters George and Lennie get kicked out of their last city and travel to soledad to start their new life. Lennie causes lots of commotion at the ranch which turns people against George and Lennie. At the end of the novel George kills Lennie which raises the question if he fairly weighed all of the options and if his choice was justified or condemned. One reason why this was a justified decision is that George only wanted the best for his best friend.

On the other hand you can analyze the actions that George did and you can say that they were not very human decisions. George killed his best friend because Lennie killed a person and was going to get into more problems but nevertheless can not say that this is justified. George always told Lennie all the plans they had together, like buying a ranch, he was always keeping it with the expectation that they were going to stay together forever. This quote is an example of how Lennie and George looked happy in the future. "O.K. What is right and what must be done are two different concepts. Often times, life requires people to do what must be done in order to save themselves, or others, from negative consequences.
