Ederic Oytas 4/9/18 Per. 5 Anthem By Ayn Rand 105 pp. Signet. $5 Anthem is a novel originally written by Ayn Rand in 1938, then revised and republished in 1946. The novel focuses on a dystopian society with no sense of individualism, but one man rebels against society. The novel doesn’t focus on promoting egotistical values, but rather to show the weaknesses of a society without individual distinction. Rand effectively uses irony to express this theme. One piece of irony is the lack of technological advances in this society. Many citizens praise the “Candle” (68) as the single most important invention. However, when Equality 7-2521 presents his “glass box” (68) which provides a better alternative, the ‘World Council’ rejects it. This

This story had some really hilarious parts. This story made me guffaw a lot. There is parts i bet that will make a baby laugh. This study is a high comedy story because, it makes you think about what Barry is saying. In Dave Barry’s anecdote “Dave Barry teaches his grandson life’s lessons..”.
Teresa Blote April 13, 2015 8B Anthem Essay In class, we recently finished reading the book Anthem by Ayn Rand. Rand was born February 2nd, 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia. In Anthem, published in 1938, Rand writes how Equality 7-2521 is treated unfairly amongst his society starting with being assigned the menial job of a Street Sweeper.
As dystopian novels, Anthem by Ayn Rand and Unwind by Neil Shusterman are bound to have similarities within their driving forces. Despite taking place in disparate societies, what links these two novels together is the concept of insubordination and resilliance. Within Anthem, the protagonist, Equality 7-2521, blindly walks through a post-modern, underlying oppressive society where individualism is bracketed off with evil or selfish ideas and commodities that led the previous world to crumble; thus leading to a civilization lacking self-awareness. A place where all citizens of the society refer to themselves as "we", are given names which lack much personality, and are indistinguishable to one another. "We are one in all and all in one.
Equality 7-2521 then goes back to show the Council what he invented but the Council did not accept mainly because of the thought that he was thinking as “I” not “we”. “‘Our brothers!’ we said. ‘We matter not, nor our transgression. It is only out brother men who matter.
Lily Haghpassand English 9 September 20, 2017 In the book, “The Anthem”, the government has found a way to maintain peace and harmony in society by instilling fear into its constituents. The members of this society are taken from their parents at birth and thrown into a world where differences are frowned upon and sameness is put above all other things, brainwashing each child with the notion that everything the government says is true. When children are born, they are denied bonding time with their parents and placed in the “Home of Infants” with other children their age and the idea of sameness is stressed. By doing this, they take away the emotion of love, among other things, and in turn, create a society of seemingly identical individuals.
Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is dystopic literature. To be dystopic literature, the protagonist feels that something is wrong with the society. The society is supposed to be a Utopia when in reality there is a problem with the society, the people are made to believe certain things that aren’t true. In Anthem, there are many characteristics of dystopian literature present. The whole society is programmed to worship the Great “We”.
Equality 7-2521 needed to find a way out. While working in a tunnel he found a glass box that held the power of electricity. He knew that he needed to show the Council of Scholars his discovery. He had confidence that they would appoint him as a scholar so he would escape from the darkness of society. “But terror struck the men of the Council” (70).
“Don’t let your special character and values, the secret that you know and no one else does, the truth – don’t let that get swallowed up by the great chewing complacency” (Aesop). The focus on individualistic characters discovering their own potentials is prevalent throughout the works Anthem and The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. In Rand’s novel Anthem, Equality 7-2521 breaks the laws of the collectivist society, a society in which the value of the group as a whole exceeds the value of an individual. He is an individualist because he thinks independently, creates inventions, and gathers knowledge. Equality leaves society behind and treks through the unknown only to discover a sense of selfishness and self-importance, which Rand calls egotism.
Why do you stand during the National Anthem, some people stand out of pure respect, other people sit because they are “oppressed”. Colin Kaepernick started a controversial protest during the preseason football game on August 14th. Many people agree that it is for a good cause, but he is not choosing the right time to protest. People believe that standing during the National Anthem is a sign of respect and gratitude for your country, but people like Kaepernick chose this time to sit or kneel to get people to look at the oppression towards minorities in the country. Kaepernick told a reporter, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people, and people of color.”
Equality Changes Overtime The book Anthem by Ayn Rand is a very interesting book. At first, it is confusing to the reader because of the use of the words we and us instead of I. The main character, Equality 7-2521 introduces himself in the plural form.
Anthem was written by Ayn Rand and published in 1938. In the beginning of the book I didn’t think much of it. It consisted of a grey city where everyone is equal and works as one, and individualism is nonexistent. This city is controlled by totalitarian leaders. The main character or protagonist, Equality 7-2521 has always been different from the rest, in terms of knowledge, height, and physical strength.
Explain the following quote: “To be free, a man must be free of his brothers.” How does this quote exemplify a theme of anthem? In the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand, Equality is learning that men had freedom and individual names. Equality 7-2521 had his brothers and the council holding him back from his freedom and self-ego, equality 7-2521 is learning the people from the unmentionable times had names and not numbers, in the novella Anthem
Imagine this, you're forced into a marriage then all of a sudden your husband dies, would you feel happy, sad, confused, how would you feel. In this story a woman named Mrs. Mallard is in this situation after her husband “dies” in a train accident. In this story there were two types of Irony, Situational Irony and Dramatic Irony. The reason I found Situational Irony in this story is because the reader was most likely thinking Mrs. Mallard would be sad after her husband, Mr. Mallard “died” in an accident that just happened an hour ago.
This lesson began with a hook to explain to students why understanding verbal, situational and dramatic irony would make them more engaging and funnier. I explained verbal irony first since it is the branch they are most familiar with. I then used table talk when I asked students to practice using verbal irony while telling how excited they were to get out of bed and come to school. I used equity squares to call on students randomly to ensure that all students were given attention and knew that participation was expected. Students were asked to show comprehension using hand signals so teaching accommodations and modifications could be implemented immediately.
