How The Values of The 1920's was Described in The Great Gatsby The novel, The Great Gatsby, shows the values that people had during the 1920's. It showed that people are greedy and are in it for just the money. The Great Gatsby also shows people trying to win over someone they love.

Money. Greed. Desire. Power. Sacrifice.

In The Great Gatsby, F Scott Fitzgerald shows how society gets corrupted trying to achieve the American Dream through the characterization of many characters like Gatsby. Jay Gatsby was a man who rose from nothing to being extremely wealthy, many would consider him as someone who has reached the American Dream. However after so much work he never really got the one thing that made him happy. Many critiques like Fussel argues that Gatsby is corrupted by the values and attitudes he holds in common with the society that destroys him. Others like Callahan and Gunn believe that the Great Gatsby tries to convince people that money and success is everything but they failed in the end by showing how miserable Gatsby is without Daisy.

Gatsby longs after Daisy since day one of meeting. Daisy is greedy and materialistic, however Gatsby places this core in his mind that she is perfection. Despite the hard evidence, he is fixated on the idea of her even when at war overseas. “...Gatsby was overwhelmingly aware of the youth and mystery that wealth imprisons and preserves, of the freshness of many clothes, and of Daisy, gleaming like silver, safe and proud above the hot struggles of the poor.” (150) Gatsby is aware of Daisy’s wealth and how it takes her out of touch with the ‘real world’ however he puts aside her lesser than side and pursues her anyways.

Ambition is the path to success and persistence of a person. The person has a desire to achieve something; this could include, money, wealth, fame, love, etc. In the novel “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, we are shown different ways ambition impacts not only Gatsby himself but the other characters. Gatsby finds himself wanting to please everyone else but changing his whole world to do so.

Considered an American classic, F. Fitzgerald’s tale of The Great Gatsby can be summarised by the creation, the attainment and the loss of a man’s dream. But it also delves into the roaring twenties and falls into an era that has an almost dreamlike quality. Where the parties are loud, the people fickle and the falls from grace are brutal. The Great Gatsby contains characters that are masked, masks which are all the source or object of the fatal flaws: lust or greed.

In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald talks about the differences between East Egg and West Egg in Rhode Island how each side comes from new money and old money. Nick tells the story about Jay Gatsby, Tom Buchanan, Daisy Buchanan and how they are materialistic and only care about money and fame. F. Scott Fitzgerald suggests that the American Dream is unattainable through his use of corrupt characters. The American Dream is unattainable due to misuse of wealth and dishonesty.

We see the characters of this book go slowly wander from their path of finding wealth and love and enter a new journey of immoral actions. By examining Gatsby, Daisy, and Tom, one can see that the journey to obtain the American Dream results in fake materialistic behaviour, unhappiness, and death. By examining Gatsby, one can see that he did anything to get Daisy’s attention and make her love him. This leads him to be extremely careless about his money and himself.

The novel The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and published the 10th of may 1925, revolves around the main character Jay Gatsby as well as Nick Caraway. All of Nick’s supposed friends are very self-centered and greedy. I believe that the characters in the novel personify greed. The novel is told through narration from the character Nick Caraway.

Daisy shows this by the fact that she knows that tom is cheating on her but still stays with him under the false fact that she is catholic purely for the reason that he has money. She also shows this when she talks about her daughter and her hopes for her. Before the war daisy was in love with Gatsby but he was poor and when he left for the war she moved on and got married to tom who was rich. But when the two are reunited after nick sets up a meeting and when she sees Gatsby’s house she learns that she is rich and becomes attracted to him again simply for the fact that he has money.

When describing his character, Fitzgerald touches upon the three deadly sins: greed, envy and gluttony. James Gatz, having grown up in a small town to farmers, wished to make more of himself. Disowning his parents at a young age, he went off in search for money, and a new identity. “And when the TUOLOMEE left for the West Indies and the Barbary Coast Gatsby left too” (Fitzgerald 107).

Scott Fitzgerald shows this in his classic novel, The Great Gatsby, a sad love story about the rich title character, Jay Gatsby, and his obsession to win back the love of the now married Daisy Buchanan, his former girlfriend. The extravagant lifestyles of Gatsby and the wealthy socialites who attend his parties lead to lost dreams and wasted lives. These men and women are absorbed by material pursuits. In Jay Gatsby’s case, all the money in the world could not replace what he truly desires, Daisy.

In Tom and Daisy’s relationship, it shows that money can ruin relationships but if you see past that barrier of money there are little pieces of love that stand out more than money. However, at the end of the day Tom and Daisy have money, are united, but they are not happy with each other. Gatsby’s relationship with Daisy includes both money and love. By this Fitzgerald is suggesting that it is possible to have love, however, it leads to difficulties because you can either have the dedication of Gatsby trying to get what he wants and never give up, or you can accept reality and realize how you will not be able to achieve your

The Great Gatsby presents its characters as having living the American Dream. However, it is only a belief; the behaviors they have and decisions they take only leave them with a false perception of life and lifestyle. The Great Gatsby relates to the corruption of the American Dream for those materialistic people who were after money. Fitzgerald reveals the idea of corruption in the American Dream through conditions such as wealth and materialism, power and social status, and relationships involving family and affairs. He uses examples of this corruption to show the reader that people are willing to lie, betray others, and commit crime to be able to live a ‘better and fuller’ life.
