Hysteria spread throughout colonial Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials. This was a time where people were being condemned to death after being accused of witchcraft. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible about these times. Miller developed personalities for the people who were in Salem during the Witch Trials throughout this play. Arthur Miller created many personalities one of these were individuals who felt a strong sense of duty often make unpopular choices because they felt that the choice they made was their responsibility.

The novel was written during the time of the Red Scare, when people believed that there were communists inside the United States’ government. The fear of communism grew when Joseph McCarthy accused 205 people of being communist within the government, this is why many people refer to this hysteria as McCarthyism. In the novel, parallels are drawn between Joseph McCarthy’s accusations and the acts of a group of girls in a small puritan town called Salem. The girls throw false accusations of witchcraft towards people causing a mass hysteria within their town.

Throughout The Crucible, fear and hysteria destroy all of Salem’s good judgement. The people who live in Salem do not know how to handle the madness that is taking place. They believe that the only way to attempt to handle it is to give in to it. This is where it is shown that fear can be so much more than fear. It can be used for political benefit, personal gain, and even as ammunition for revenge.

Miller’s use of rhetorical strategies is used to describe the audience's viewpoint during real-life time events through the fictionalized story of the Salem in which it demonstrates witch trials in Massachusetts Bay Colony during the 1692-3 in which were the same situation. Fear can lead to many things. It may lead to you making harsh decision and be very closed minded. But overall, our fear can blind society from the truth and keep them from getting justice. Although 1692 the Salem witch trials and the Red Scare were over 200 years apart, The similarities are striking. both trials used intimidation, fear, hatred, and false accusations to ruin innocent lives. Both trials resulted in terrible outcomes, with both ending with innocent people being put to death and shunned from society.

The Crucible Fear has effected much of history. Many of these events in history are very similar. One of the biggest examples in history would be The Holocaust. An example would be the Salem witch trails which were depicted in the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The Crucible and The Holocaust are related because one person was to blame for the mass hysteria, there was one person in power, fear was used to control the people and many people were wrongly punished.

The Crucible is riddled with irony, and Arthur Miller utilizes situational and dramatic irony to show the difference between followers and leaders.
