All authors, at varying levels, write with purpose. Ever written work has a purpose, varying from artistic creativity to academic and professional curiosity. Although the purpose is evident to the author, the reader may find difficulty determining what that purpose is. In the case of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) public release on Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), the document’s purpose, as well as its intended audience, can be determined through an introspective analysis. One can use the three rhetorical appeals of logos, pathos, and ethos to determine the purpose of the CDC’s document, and give one’s self insight into the audience for which it is intended. The CDC is a government organization, which …show more content…
Logos can apply to the choice of information provided, as well as the format of information. When Aristotle first postulated his philosophy of rhetoric, in contrast to Plato’s, he included the appeal of logos to conform to the rationality of Greece in his day, a greatly underplayed concept during the mythological era before his time (Meyer, 2012). In the example of the CDC’s public release on AHDH, the CDC clearly represents logos by the format in which they present the document, as well as the fact that a need for the document exists. If one considers logos as the sole appeal of the document, one could assume that the intended audience is a collection of academics and persons with a professional interest in the subject. There are, however, additional rhetorical aspects to …show more content…
When one contemplates the credibility of the CDC, it is important to know who they are and where they come from. The CDC operates under the oversight of the HSS, as stated earlier. Guttman, Boccher-Lattimore, & Salmon (1998) found that the CDC, along with the Surgeon General, maintains a higher credibility rating than state-run and funded entities. It is also stated that, “Source credibility is a cornerstone of any successful information campaign” (Guttman et al., 1998, para. 4). When one accounts for these statements, the importance of credibility, as well as the credibility that the CDC has, one can view the CDC’s document as supporting the presence of ethos. Because of the importance of credibility, as well as the credibility of federal government agencies, the public release on ADHD appeals to caretakers, as well as those with an educational and professional
Alejandra Gomez Campaign Conclusion In every presidential campaign, candidates and their PR team work hard to grab the attention of their audience. As of today, Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump all used similar techniques to appeal to the people. Using the different elements; Ethos, Pathos and Logos the people were able to decide which side they want to support. Using Ethos, Pathos and Logos helped my team and I create an interesting yet informative campaign.
The author’s use of logos is flawed at best, with numerous unfounded premises, poor evidence, and several logical fallacies; however, due to the non-critical nature of the audience, they are likely to find the article persuasive due to the other non-logos rhetorical methods employed.
When a topic is under discussion, there are many strategies that can be implemented in order to communicate and transmit a point of view. First of all I analyze the audience, a correct study of the audience can give us the chance to choose the right approach. Then, I try to be specific and confident when I present my opinion, and use pathos, logos and ethos. Pathos are required to connect with the audience and give them the possibility to relate with the theme. Logos are a strong resource that supports the ideas that are under discussion, always a serious source is a perfect reference.
Although Jane E. Brody did create an interesting tone within her piece and cited examples from a chiropractor, a San Diego State University study, and a report in The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Amy Cuddy's use of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos aided in her editorial's ability to not only inform, but compel the reader, thus creating the more credible argument. Her editorial established the best reasoning around the topic of how posture affects you due to not only being able to engage the reader with a personal tone throughout her work, but connect through the topic of technology along with true facts. Cuddy uses ethos by creating a personal tone throughout her editorial, acting as if she is truly speaking to the reader. In doing this, she sets a friendly mood and establishes a trust
Ethos is the ethical appeal in communication. Katy Perry demonstrates this on her Twitter page when she made a post saying, “Happy #PRIDE month. I see you and I love you.” This is her way of showing her support of an ethical standpoint. Katy is showing an intended sign of respect for the LGBT community.
I will assess an argument with ethos, logos, and pathos which are important to present the points in my essay and these can help me make my argument appeal to audience. Ethos is thinking ethical appeal which involves convincing my audience that I have enough knowledge and can be trusted. I have to prove myself that I understand what I am arguing. Next is logos which is thinking logical appeal. I use it when I credible evidence to support my argument.

In 1965 the Federal government became the major purchaser of Healthcare in the form of Medicaid and Medicare, and in 1965 the CDC came into existence (Turnock, P 99). Under the constitutional laws the state handed over some power to the Federal government but it did not turn over the power of health to them. The State has primary
Ethos, Pathos and Logos, are all ways of persuading someone, playing on different tactics. Several years after the Cold War started, in 1961, President John F. Kennedy, who had only been inaugurated a couple months before, gave a speech in Houston Texas, at the Rice University, in front of a big audience, about the “Race to Space”. In this speech the president whether intentionally or not included all three forms of persuasion. The president wanted to convince the people that being the first country in space, would mean a great deal for them, that if they were the first ones out in space, the peace would be kept, and that space would not be used as a weapon, but for scientific knowledge only.
For my poster, I established logos by addressing the benefits of taking a break when feeling overwhelmed with schoolwork, reminders, and notifications. By addressing the benefits and importance of taking a short break in college, I appealed to logical reasoning by stating specific examples of how taking a break during schoolwork and studying can be beneficial and even help students perform better when they are more rested. Moreover, by addressing the importance of taking a break, I supported my main point of view on the issue of feeling stressed and overwhelmed in college by addressing specific reasons the spring semester or the beginning of any semester can cause many students to stress, including syllabus week, adjusting to new classes, and viewing deadlines for various assignments. Furthermore, I appealed to logical reasoning in my poster by stating how all college students experience some form of stress and that the beginning of the spring semester can be stressful, so that the audience may understand why the benefits of taking our break are significant to my main point. By using logical reasoning to support my point, I desired to develop pathos and logos through the same information by explaining the benefits of taking a break, which appeals to logos by providing important information and pathos by creating empathy in a student audience who can understand the
Logos uses research-biased evidence in order to help prove the main purpose of the article. Heath uses logos to assist her in displaying the evidence that there are prominent benefits of watching silly videos. For instance, an example of logos utilized by Heath represented in the article is “Research psychologist Acacia Parks, chief scientist at Happify Health, a digital mental health company, explains that to complete a task, we need both positive and negative emotions.” (Heath, 590). This shows the reader that in-depth research was conducted in order to produce a more persuasive article.

Ethos, Pathos and Logos Bernard Roth author of The Achievement Habit: Stop Wishing, Start Doing and Take Command of Your Life and professor at Stanford University taught a class in design thinking that helped students realize their potential to be the best they can be. In writing his book he makes effective use of the rhetorical triangle in appealing to the readers’ emotions, logical thinking and sense of value. In chapter one he uses each of these argumentative strategies especially effectively when he describes what it means to be successful. He begins chapter one by beginning a conversation with the reader saying, “Your Life has no meaning”.
“Laziness may appear attractive, but work gives satisfaction” (Frank). Companies attempt to take advantage of individuals by presenting convincing images and text, so consumers do not have to do their research. The first part of the rhetorical triangle is pathos, which permits consumers to reflect on their personal lives and emotions. Additionally, companies pass on vital statistics about the product through logos. However, the accurate statistics often lie in the fine print, and the consumers usually discern only the fascinating facts.
