Introduction:
Shakespeare is famous for the way he produces plays that he makes and how he shows emotion throughout them. In the play "Romeo and Juliet" there are two characters Tybalt and Benvolio. Shakespeare brings Tybalt and Benvolio to life with emotions being expressed in almost every scene, Tybalt is a very loud and easily angered man, but Benvolio doesn’t like to fight and tries to settle things down almost instantly. Throughout the play Shakespeare expresses these emotions, giving them feelings and different looks on the stage.
Tybalts anger:
Shakespeare uses Tybalt’s emotions to highlight the consequences from his uncontrolled hate. In the end of the play, this gets him killed. Tybalt was yelling at Romeo while he was angry, telling him “Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries that thou hast done me, therefore turn and draw” this line is telling the audience about the sadness that comes from unresolved problems.

His words and actions show his strong dedication to finding a peaceful conclusion. Benvolio begs Mercutio “Good Mercutio, let's retire," benvolio and Mercutio get into an argument. “The Capulets are away, the day is hot, and if we run into each other, we won't be able to avoid a fight” .This passage exemplifies Benvolio's attempts to foster peace and stop future
In this extract Benvolio is presented as loyal, a peacemaker and mature. Benvolio is a foil character for Tybalt therefore he is known to be ‘benevolent’ as Shakespeare suggests in his name. Furthermore in this extract Benvolio is shown to give his recount of an earlier fight and the audience is shown his mature approach and his loyalty to his friends and family. Shakespeare shows Benvolio as loyal in this extract as only two lines Into his recount Benvolio establishes that his cousin is not to blame for the fight . He says “ Romeo that spoke him fair” highlighting to the prince and others who hadn’t witnessed the fight that Romeo too way vying for peace and hadn’t instigated the fight.
The text states “ Therefore turn and draw (Shakespeare 846)”. This evidence from the text shows tybalt is a violent person that causes feuds. Tybalt murdering of Mercutio Alienates Romeo when Romeo kills Tybalt to avenge Mercutio. His killing of Mercutio (a kinsman of The Prince) causes The Prince to
Furthermore, Tybalt's deep loathe towards Romeo leads to a street fight, which resulted in Mercutio and Tybalt's tragic deaths. Tybalt says, "Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries that thou hast done me./ Therefore turn and draw.” (3.1.67-68). Tybalt's actions subsequently led to Romeo's banishment from Verona which led to the long distance from Juliet therefore, ending the young lover’s relationship. In summary, Tybalt's pugnacious behavior ultimately led to events that resulted in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, making him crucial in causing the tragic
Benvolio is fully aware of how close the two families are to breaking out into a full out war with one another, and knows that this skirmish could easily be the start of it if he allowed the fight to continue. Him intervening shows how he has to act as the peacekeeper in order to keep things from escalating any further between the families. Another example is when him and Mercutio are talking in the streets at the end of Act 2. Here, Benvolio brings up that Tybalt has sent Romeo a letter challenging him to a duel. Mercutio remarks, “Alas poor Romeo!
Tybalt is a fiery, arrogant character, he is always fighting and trying to prove some sort of dominance. He instigated many fights with the Montagues. He first recognizes Romeo at the Capulet’s party and immediately challenges him to a fight. Tybalt’s offensive and intolerant attitude towards Romeo’s presence shows the level of his temperament and the later influence he will have. Driving a deeper wedge between the Capulet and Montague families.
Tybalt is hot headed and rash. In the first act of Romeo and Juliet he is already starting fights as stated by him “What, drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word / As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee.”(1.1.63-64). Tybalt’s hate of peace is the most blatant example of his hot headed and rash actions. He is trying to get the Montagues riled up so that he can have a fight.
His hatred for the Montagues is shown in the quote, Jones 3 TYBALT: “It fits when such a villain is a guest. I’ll not endure him.” ( 1.5.73-74). Tybalt’s hatred for Romeo is eventually the death of him. Tybalt’s temper and rage is shown in the quote, TYBALT: “Patience perforce with willful choler meeting Makes my flesh tremble in their different greeting.
Benvolio was talking about going to the Capulet’s party because he wanted Romeo to get over Rosaline and to not mourn over her. If Benvolio never convinced Romeo into going to the party, Romeo and Juliet would have never
Because Tybalt holds a grudge against Romeo, he is to blame for his death. This can be seen when he says, “Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries that thou hast done me. Therefore turn and draw” (3.1.37-38). Tybalt is protesting Romeo’s invitation of leaving the
While only being “role” characters they find themselves being a huge part of the success of the story’s plot. Benvolio is a unsuccessful peace maker that relentlessly tries to inflict his moralistic diplomacy on the other characters, just to be ignored. While his counterpart, Tybalt is the complete opposite of him and tends to be the problem starter, and tries to manipulate the other character in to doing what he thinks is correct. I believe they are in this story to show the internal conflict that every man/woman is dealt with on a regular day basis. As a majority, we tend to go with our irrational side (Tybalt) then to go to our rational side (Benvolio) when put in a circumstance.
Tybalt is a very feisty and demanding character in Romeo and Juliet. As a result many people are hurt by his actions. Tybalt demonstrates this behavior when he says, “Boy this will not excuse the injuries that thou hast done me; therefore turn and draw.” (3.1.62-63). What Tybalt is saying in this quote is that he does not forgive Romeo, and just wants to challenge him in a fight so he can basically kill Romeo.
The first time we see this side of Benvolio is in the first act, when him and some other Montagues encounter the Capulets and a duel commences, he proclaims “I do but keep the peace”(1.1.69) further explaining that he does not condone violence and wants their families to live in peace. Another instance in which Benvolio is portrayed as a peacemaker is in Act 3, because Romeo and Juliet are getting married he proposes that him and Mercutio leave to make sure not to encounter any Capulets saying, “I pray thee, good Mercutio, let’s
Tybalt is an aggressor who seeks to start fights, he always worsens the situations. This is shown during the fight in the public when Tybalt says to Benvolio “As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee, coward!...” Benvolio is shown as a peace maker; Benvolio stops the fights between the two families by saying “…I do but keep the peace. Put up thy sword, or manage it to part these men with me…”
Benvolio tells Tybalt that he doesn’t want to fight, and that they should put an end to it. Instead of heading Benvolio’s words, Tybalt responds saying,“What, drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word/As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee,”(1.1.71-72). From
