Mrs. Dubose was an angry old lady who had a nasty morphine addiction.
2. In her last weeks on earth she decided she wanted to die free and kick her addiction. This process was awful and unnecessary but it showed exemplary courage on mrs, Dubose’s part.
3. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do”(Lee 149).
4. Mrs. Dubose wanted to kick her addiction in her dying days and she accomplished that. She pushed through the agony of withdrawal and in her dying moments was free. Even Atticus, a person who is very courageous, says that Mrs. Dubose is the most courageous person he’d ever met.
5 “According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew.” (Lee 147).
6. Atticus says that Mrs. Dubose was the bravest person he ever knew, She put her mind to being free from addiction and she did it. Falling a demon like addiction takes courage but facing that demon in her dying days, Mrs. Dubose showed extreme
Dubose’s unseen patience in fighting morphine addiction and her astonishing strength in extending time between doses of morphine, Lee uses Mrs. Dubose’s true intentions to show things are not always as they seem as the theme of the novel. “‘Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict,’ said Atticus. ‘She took it as a pain-killer for years’” (Lee 147). Atticus explains to his children that Mrs. Dubose used to yell at them because she was fighting morphine addiction and needed some way to get her anger out.
Atticus’s and his courage “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway” - John Wayne. In to kill a mocking bird, courage is seen all through the book. Many characters throughout the book have shown great courage. However, we discover that Atticus is an outlier through his personality, actions, and words.
This example clearly portrays Atticus’ social courage, as even though the court is in disapproval as to Atticus’s beliefs, he speaks up knowing he can receive backlash. Another instance of social courage demonstrated by Atticus is when he explains a key concept of Maycomb to Scout. He speaks about even if people were defeated once previously, that is not a reason to keep trying and to win, stating that just because we were “licked a hundred years before” isn’t a reason for us to “not try to win…” (Lee 76) This is Atticus’ principle for defending Tom Robinson in a town of discrimination and inequality.
Dubose shows courage by fighting her morphine addiction before her death. She knew that she did not have much longer to live and had beheld nothing but she still wanted to win one last battle. Mrs. Dubose had fits of rage about Atticus defending a black man, this causes Jem to rage and destroy her property. Atticus eventually found out and punished Jem and Scout by reading to her after school every day.
To Kill a Mockingbird demonstrates that courage means standing up for what is right, no matter the cost. One of the most significant characters who demonstrates this is when Atticus tries so hard to help Tom Robinson even though he knows that they won’t win. A quote that best shows this is, “Atticus, are we going to win it”
Dubose displays bravery and courage when she is determined to die free of her addiction to morphine. When Scout and Jem are at Mrs. Dubose’s house , Scout observes, “From time to time she would open her mouth wide, and I could see her tongue undulate faintly. Cords of saliva would collect on her lips; she would draw them in, then open her mouth again. Her mouth seemed to have a private existence of its own.
Throughout the story, the reader sees that Atticus acts on his courage and teaches his children about courage and taking risks. In one of these instances, Atticus explains to Scout and Jem about Mrs. Dubose's courage during her last few weeks: “‘It’s knowing you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what’”(Lee 128). He wants his children to understand that they must try to complete the task even though it may seem achievable. They must use their courage to accomplish a task and understand that they will make mistakes. Atticus shows his children that he listens to his advice when working for Tom Robinson.
Atticus’s courage shows greatly throughout the trial and daily life, he shows Mcourage to his children to show that none of this is right so Atticus must show them how to stand up for what's right. “You never really understand a
"Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It 's knowing you 're licked before you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. " Atticus has shown courage by shooting the rabid mad dog and in doing so protected his own children and the citizens of Maycomb, but in this quote he is telling his children that real courage is knowing you might lose but do it anyways, he is referring to the events of Mrs Dubose fighting morphine addiction in the last stages of her life.
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.” (Lee, 116). Atticus is a good father who wants to teach Scout about courage. Mrs. Dubose was addicted to painkillers but was determined to overcome her addiction before dying and Atticus made Jem read to her to distract her from her pain. This was a good lesson to teach Scout because it teaches her that being courageous isn’t just having a gun but doing something that you are not familiar with like Mrs. Dubose not taking painkillers and getting clean even though she didn’t have much time left.
To Kill a Mockingbird - Courage "Courage is when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" According to Atticus Finch, an honest lawyer in Harper Lee 's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. "Real courage" is when you fight for what is right regardless of whether you win or lose. Atticus fits into this definition of what "real courage" is and demonstrates it several times throughout the novel. "The only thing we 've got is a black man 's word against the Ewells '.
Jem had the conception that courage was a “manly man”, a man that was tough and could fight. However, using Ms. Dubose as an example, she explained a new type of courage to Jem. Ms. Dubose knew that her struggle was close to impossible to win, as many people failed to break addictions, yet she still tried to fight it, and winning at the end. The courage to do so was considered, by Atticus, real courage. This was also demonstrated by Liu Xiaobo.
Seeing Mrs. Dubose fight her morphine addiction demonstrates how doing what one thinks is right is more important than doing the easy thing, which in this case would be dying on the morphine. This is the courage Atticus talks about, the courage for one to put themself through hardship to carry out what they believe in. Mrs. Dubose is there to show that when anyone, no matter how unsavory, works to carry out what they believe is right is doing the most courageous thing they can.
According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I knew’” (Lee, 149). This shows how Mrs. Dubose was valiant and determined to achieve her goal, which was overcoming her addiction to morphine. This shows how Atticus respects her so greatly, regardless of what she has said to him and his children.
She never broke her promise to herself and left a mark on the Finch family, especially Jem. Atticus had known about Mrs. Dubose’s problem, which is why he let her go with all the mean comments about him.in the book it states “I wanted to show you see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand”. Atticus wanted to show that real courage is not shown by strength but by
