Corruption of the American Dream Many people in this decade of our lives have their own version of the american dream. When being a kid and learning about the american dream, we think of a family in a nice house with kids and pets. We don’t know to truly think of what the american dream is for people. The Great Gatsby is great at telling what it was like back in the 1920s when people were finding their american dreams. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the american dream corrupts Jay Gatsby and takes over his life. The “american dream” was invented so to say in 1931. James Truslow Adams defined the american dream as “a dream of a social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of fortuitous circumstances of birth or position” (Willis para. 3). Tom sends Gatsby and Daisy home. Daisy ends up being the one to drive and her emotion are all over the place. She ends up hitting Myrtle Wilson with Gatsby’s yellow car and drives off. She doesn’t bother to stop to see if she's dead or anything. When Tom, Jordan and Nick drive by they notice the big crowd and find out what happened. They find out that Myrtle had died and found out that a big bright car hit her. Tom was livid because he immediately knew it was Gatsby’s car, but he didn’t know it was Daisy driving. Tom talks with Wilson and tells him about Gatsby. This puts the image that it was all Gatsby’s fault in Wilsons head so he wants revenge. Wilson goes to Jay’s house and finds him then shoots him in the pool and turns the gun on himself. He truly believed it was all Gatsby’s fault and Wilson could not live without
At a luncheon later in the novel, Toms realizes the love between Daisy and Jay and becomes furious. Toms tells Daisy how Gatsby became wealthy illegally and Daisy decides that her allegiance is to Tom. Tom then allows Daisy to go back to West Egg with Gatsby to show him that he cannot be hurt by his actions. When Gatsby and Daisy are driving back through the Valley of Ashes, they accidently strike Myrtle and kill her and then drive off. Gatsby tells Tom that even though Daisy was driving the car, he intends to take the blame.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was a story chock full of deceit, corruptness, loneliness, and a myriad of facades. The wretched life of Jay Gatsby, a man so in love he would lose himself in attempt to find her, Mrs. Daisy Buchanan. As the story begins to unfold, the least unsuspected man turns out to be the most corrupt character of the whole book, Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby lived a life of poverty leading him to create a whole new identity that entailed success and wealth. The first sign that reveals his deceptive mannerism is how Jay felt it was necessary to re-write his life instead of work with the life he has been given.
The American Dream is an ideal, but it can be compared to an advertisement for a product. It appeals to society, tempting those with its colorful claims of prosperity, wealth and freedom. Through hard work, anyone can live a life of smiles and backyard barbecues. However, much like an advertisement, there is more than meets the eye. The dark side of humanity reveals that people are willing to do deplorable things in order to attain goals.

The parties at Gatsby's house ends because he doesn’t need parties to get Daisy’s attention for attraction. In Chapter seven, Daisy has Nick, Gatsby, Tom and Jordan to lunch with her. At lunch Tom steps into another room Daisy kisses Gatsby and told him she loved him. We learned that Tom and Daisy have a daughter together named Pammy. When Myrtle was hit Tom knows that Myrtle saw Gatsby’s car and thought it was Tom’s car because he was driving his car earlier in the day.
