What is ambition?Ambition is the thing that drives you to achieve a strong desire. You could say MacBeth has the strongest ambition throughout the book , since he kills the king with his own hands and then continues to have people killed throughout the book to reduce any risks of someone over throwing him or finding out the truth on how Duncan was actually killed. Even though MacBeth's ambition is strong , some may argue Lady MacBeths is even stronger , after all she was the one to push him into becoming king. After hearing of macbeths encounter with the witches , lady Macbeth immediately springs into action and begins a plan. Lady macbeth announces on line 39 , “unsex me hear”. She says this almost immediately after reading macbeths letter. …show more content…
Not only does she have this idea that she will be queen but she pushes and hints to Macbeth about him ‘fullfilling’ what the witches told him from the start. She says to macbeth ‘ all-hail hereafter’ , this means future kingship. This one line shows how it is now engraved into her that she must put this plan forward , however Macbeth either doesn’t bother to listen to her or brushes the line and the chances of becoming king off. Personally i belive he brushes it off because throughout the book he shows that he respects her very highly so if he did , why would he simply not care to listen top his wife after coming home from …show more content…
Most women would listen to their husband and stay on the side lines , however is appears lady macbeth refuses to follow these ideals. She commands and convinces her husband to murder the king. A woman this independent and strong willed is bound it have a even stronger ambition than her husbands. She may also be viewed as witch like as shown through her calling for spirits to ride her off ‘all feminine traits’ and ‘ come , you spirits’. The era macbeth was written in was full of witch trials and a king that was constantly giving praise to people who capture and/or kill them. That leaves the question , did Shakespeare make lady macbeth witch like to show his loyalty to the king after many conspiracy theories or did he make her witch like to show the extent she will go to to become queen. In this situation , it is most likely both. In the case that it was Shakespeares way of portraying ambition through lady macbeth , it shows , once again , that she will willingly turn to spirits and sacrifice whatever she needs
She’s more of the brains behind the plan to kill King Duncan rather than the actual murderer. In Act 1: Scene 5, she receives the letter from Macbeth and she says “Yet I do fear thy nature; It is too full o’ th’ milk of human kindness”, she knows that he will end up not wanting to go through with their plan. Although he could have said no she still pushed him to proceed. Maybe if Macbeth would’ve put his foot down instead of cowering down and doing whatever Lady Macbeth said, he wouldn’t be in the predicament of having to kill his friends that he is in now. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are much like Adam and Eve.
Macbeth knows that the King has trust in him and doesn’t believe that violence is the right way to gain power. In contrary, Lady Macbeth tells her husband to “Look like th' innocent flower, But be the serpent under ’t.” (1.5 56-57). If Lady Macbeth had not been a woman, it’s certain that she would have committed the murder
This then caused her to not let anything get in her way of accomplishing this goal of hers. Shakespeare demonstrates this idea by writing “Hie thee hither, That I may pour my spirits in thine ear And chastise with the valor of my tongue All that impedes thee from the golden round” (Act 1, Scene 7). By saying this, he makes it clear that Lady Macbeth was scared that her husband would not be able to have to gets to do what it takes to help her achieve the role of queen so she is going to try to convince him to do some extreme things to make the prophecy come true. It can be seen that the reason behind Macbeth carrying out the murder are not his reasosns but instead the reasons that Lady Macbeth tells him. Another way that Shakespeare reveals Lady Macbeth’s greed is by giving her the dialogue “Great Glamis, worthy Cawdor, Greater than both, by the all-hail hereafter, Thy letters have transported me beyond This ignorant present, and I feel now The future in the instant.”
She was fearful that Macbeth wouldn’t have the courage to kill the king to take the throne for himself. She antagonizes him by mocking his masculinity when it comes to killing Duncan. “Infirm of purpose!” Macbeth (Shakespeare 2.2.63). When Lady Macbeth was introduced, she was ambitious and cold-hearted, she wanted her femininity stripped away and be given the strength, courage, and respect of a man.
When Lady Macbeth found out about the predictions the witches had for Macbeth, she started to pressure him, even guilt tripped him about their deceased son, and made him doubt the morals he valued. As act I of Macbeth, carried on, the image and principles Macbeth had for himself began to rot away. While Macbeth desired take King Duncan’s throne, he wanted to do it the in righteous matter. Whenever Macbeth had doubts about killing King Duncan, Lady Macbeth was always there to urge him otherwise, because she cared more about power than him "Great Glamis, worthy Cawdor." (1.5 52).
As soon as she gets word of the witches prophecy, she shifts her focus to making Macbeth king and herself queen. She is a very power hungry character. It is clear that she dominates Macbeth with her words as she convinces him to murder Duncan. She questions his manhood and does absolutely anything that she can to manipulate him. “When you durst do it, then you were a man And to be more than what you were, you would Be so much more the man” (Shakespeare 1.7).
When she says this, she implies that she is going to manipulate him so he can take action to earn his title as King. The speech establishes Lady Macbeth’s dominance, which is an essential quality for a man in a normal relationship, but in this case the situation has switched. Lady Macbeth also thinks Macbeth is too loyal, and has great fear over the consequences of getting caught after killing King Duncan. Therefore, she finds
Someone with high ambition is someone who has high aspirations and determination. Ambition can be viewed as a positive or negative characteristic to have. Depending on the circumstances and the person, ambition can either be helpful in reaching a common goal, due to determination and a strive for excellence, or ambition can be devastating to the process of reaching the goal, causing one to become blindsided by the task at hand. Overall, depending on the person and or character determines how ambition affects their goal, negatively or positively. Ambition is found in everyday tasks, society, as well as in the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare.
“Come, you spirits, That tend on mortal thoughts,/unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full/ Of dire cruelty” (1.5.41-44). Lady Macbeth is the personification of male dominance, ruthlessness and violence. She hopes that she could take control of all action. She yearns to be a man and her implication is that she is more masculine than Macbeth. Her drive and violent nature is more akin to men and their masculinity.
The witches played a colossal role in Macbeth’s downfall and ultimately, his death. Since the first part of the prophecy stated Macbeth as being the new Thane of Cawdor, he believed he could continue to become king as well. In knowing his prediction, Macbeth also realized that since the king was in good health, so he would have to kill the king himself. For the rest of his prophecy to come true he would have to kill the king for himself. “All hail, Macbeth that shalt be king hereafter!”
She uses this to convince her husband to carry out the murders. In the end Macbeth decided that he was going to be a “man” and refused to let himself be influenced by his wife. He does
She is a loyal though misguided wife, not without tenderness and not without conscience. Lady Macbeth’s willingness to sacrifice her femininity exposes her loyalty towards Macbeth. After reading the letter regarding the witch’s prophecies, she decides she must do whatever it take to make Macbeth King: Come you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty.
Macbeth chose to listen and accept the prophecy as truth even though he had no proof. Although the witches influence Macbeth they did not suggest to Macbeth to kill the king, he got that idea from his selfish thoughts. After the witches visit Macbeth he goes to his wife about his thoughts of killing the king. Lady Macbeth encourages murder because that’s the only way she thinks Macbeth can become king.
throughout the play, Macbeth deals with being manipulated into committing heinous crimes that gets him and Lady Macbeth what they deeply wish for. I believe that Macbeth was a victim in this instance because because the witches had told him a prophecy that appealed to him. also, his wife Lady Macbeth manipulated him for her own greedy desires causing Macbeth to make bad decisions. Macbeth was led to believe that killing people would lead him to becoming king. keep believe this because the witches had told him a phrophecy that stated "all hail, Macbeth that shalt be king hereafter.
She wanted the title of being queen and King Duncan was in her way of that, so she got into Macbeth’s head. Macbeth was reluctant at first, which also shows that he is not wholly evil. A true wholly evil person wouldn’t be reluctant about killing someone. Throughout the play, it is evidence that Macbeth is not wholly
