An example of a time I did not use sociological imagination was during winter break when my best friend got married. After finding out through her boyfriend’s Instagram that they were getting married soon, I really took it to heart and thought she did it behind my back. They had been engaged for weeks and I had not the slightest clue. After talking to her, I found out that they would be getting married within the week. Her husband would be getting deployed very soon, and they wanted to seal the deal before he would be taken overseas. It took me a very long time to understand why she would marry someone who she had only known for a month. I thought she did not want me to know what was going on, but after understanding that he was being deployed, I understood where she was coming from. After realizing this, I no longer judge her harshly as I once did. Sociological imagination gives you the ability to understand the different factors that go into a situation. It helps us identify if the problem can be solved by a change in the person or if there needs to be a change in society. Over the last fifteen years, I have grown mentally and socially. I credit my growth to my ability to analyze and understand the world for what it is. Social imagination is the use of information to understand the world and ourselves for who we are. Possessing the quality of mind that can develop reason and the capacity to shift perspectives are the basis of social imagination (Mills 2000). As I mentioned in reflection one, I came to realize that my way of thinking is what helped me overcome living a poor lifestyle.
The sociological imagination allows a person to tell apart their personal problems from problems that affect society as a whole, however they can see how the two are connected. In doing this a person can discover that the current social structure and culture that surrounds them can be the root cause of their personal problems. One example is that an individual can see their personal problem of being poor as also the outcome of lack of resources in their community for obtaining higher education. Rather than seeing their problem as only something that affects him, he can see that various elements of his culture and the social structure surrounding him play into his

This theory is clearly demonstrated in The Truman Show. The movie helps to deepen my understanding of sociological imagination and helps me to see how the outside world controls my life.
