Lies and Deceit Arthur Miller’s The Crucible reveals to the reader about lies and deceit in the small town of Salem. Abigail Williams, a 17 year old girl who lets her jealousy of Elizabeth Proctor turn her into this evil person and affect the lives of many. Several lies unfold from the actions of the two characters as the court questions them. The development of characters, setting, and plot are revealed through John Proctor’s growth. Miller reveals the central idea of lies and deceit in Abigail's actions throughout the play.

Act Ⅲ of Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible illustrates that lies can quickly spiral out of control and hurt people even if that wasn’t the initial intention. Lying is generally the response of someone is looking for self protection or to protect someone else. Children often lie to their parents because they feel the need to protect themselves and telling the truth could be detrimental to their protection (Smiley 1). More often than not, lies spiral out of control because they become too complex, as the lie typically needs to be covered up from another lie, which needs to be covered up by an additional lie and so on. Already challenged with tough decisions, the characters continue to test each other throughout the play by the ways that they lie, the ways that they make false accusations, and the ways that they ultimately die for a cause. In Act III of the Crucible many of the characters feel compelled through desperation to lie because they feel like that is the only way to get the people they care about out of trouble. Since this whole thing started from a lie, whether it was a lie to God about adultery or a lie to get out of trouble when doing witchcraft. All the problems seem to be coming from Abigail. Mary warren had to lie because Abigail threatened her in Act I, Abigail said if you tell anyone what we were really doing ill hurt you. So Mary lied about it how she isn’t hurting Abigail through the bird at first and whenever she realized if she didn’t do anything then she was going to be killed.

A courtroom full of innocent people waiting to discover if they will be put to death. Everyone is tense and many are frightened. Who was the cause of all of this? The girls had to act fast in order to save themselves from getting into trouble because, in their community, their actions were considered sinful and immoral.

Fear is strong and manipulative, it can cause individuals to do the wrong things for their own safety and protection. In other words; souls lie for their own well being and secureness. The Crucible has an exceeding amount of lies throughout the entire book followed by characters. However most of the lies are a result from conflicts with one of the main characters who is the reason for the whole chaos; Abigail. A popular saying, “One lie leads to another”, this saying describes The Crucible sufficiently, the book consists of lies, that lead another and another, eventually by the end of the book families and relationships are torn apart.

The Crucible Trials Many people were gruesomely hung in front of whole communities because of a few selfish little girls who were at most to blame for the unfair trials. It Wasn’t Me In The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, there were many different themes and lessons that the reader could relate to or compare to today's society. A major theme that stuck out in this story was many people will tell lies to get what they want. This theme shows throughout the entire story and is very relevant in today's society.

During The Crucible, there are constant and recurring themes that show within the characters and their actions. One of these major and important themes is deceit. It is by far the most obvious and constant theme throughout the entirety of the play. Arthur Miller has incorporated this theme into his characters as well as his reasoning for creating the play itself. The entire storyline is based off of mass hysteria from lies in the village of Salem.

In “The Crucible,” many things happen to innocent people because of a group of girls. The play starts with this same group of girls, who are in the forest practicing witchcraft. During the time in which the play takes place, anyone who practiced witchcraft was sentenced and had to await trial to see whether or not they were innocent or guilty. This group of girls claimed they saw the Devil, and that some of the people were ‘seen’ with the Devil. They accused two innocent people named Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne.

One lie started a moment in history people today call crazy, unacceptable, and unrepeatable. “The Crucible” is a play that explains, through a crazy but remarkable story, why lying is a sin. In the present, lying could occur more frequently that truth is told.
