Imagine a person being wrongfully convicted of a crime they did not commit. There are multiple cases of people that have been wrongfully convicted. These people may receive exoneration due to the Innocence Project, an organization that dedicated its career to those wrongfully convicted. Phillip Bivens, Larry Ruffin, and Bobby Ray Dixon start the process of exoneration due to the crime committed, their involvement along with others, and what led to their wrongful conviction.
Phillip Bivens and two other men were convicted of the murder of Eva Gail Patterson on May 4, 1979. Eva was killed on a warm night by a man that broke into her house. In addition, reports found that Eva was raped and killed from a cut throat in front of her four-year-old

Eva’s four-year-old son had witnessed that the man had broke into their house. The son consistently described that there was only one man that had raped and killed his mother (The National). The son was the only witness and testified that one man had committed the crime and yet there were three that were convicted. Also, Eva’s son was traumatized from the event he had witnessed. He told the police that a bad boy convicted the crime, which was a single man rape and killing (Robertson). The police had created a storyline about the man acting alone, but there were other suspects connected to the crime. The four-year-old son was not considered a reliable source because of his young age, hence, the three men convicted of the crime. There wasn’t much evidence to convict the men, so they were wrongfully …show more content…
Mr. Dixon’s stay at the prison was cut short due to medical conditions. He had been kicked in the head by a horse as a child and suffered from constant seizures (Robertson). Dixon’s lung cancer had spread to his brain and he was given medical parole, but still faced the charges for the crime. Lawyers of the Innocence Project had seen the frequency of false confessions and requested a rape kit. Semen was tested that was found on a shirt and results led to another man that has been investigated (Robertson). Just this one piece of evidence proved the innocence of the men. Dixon and Bivens ordered evidence to be presented to a grand jury. The men were officially exonerated when the Forrest County Grand Jury heard about the evidence and declined charges that were given (The National). Although, the exoneration was a success, Dixon and Ruffin didn’t live to enjoy their time out of prison. The three men were seen as people and not those that committed a crime after

How would you feel if you were falsely accused of a terrible crime? That’s right, Ozie Powell and the Scottsboro Boys were accused of rape and sent to jail for many years, a crime of which they didn't even commit. In the case of Scottsboro, Ozie Powell was clearly innocent of rape. Ozie wasn’t on the same car as the woman who accused the boys of raping them, and Ozie didn't even know the other men on the train until the day of the accusations. The woman who accused the boys of the crime were prostitutes, and had had intercourse only a little while before entering the train, explaining why the sperm found in their system was dead.
Before the sentence was finalized, witnesses from both Donaldson’s side and Huguet’ side took the stand to be questioned. During the questioning process, Hillary McLaughlin, another one of Donaldson’s victims, decided to testify. Though she didn’t want to be placed back into the situation again she knew it was the right thing to be done. As person after person was brought up and asked a numerous questions, Donaldson was shown to be nothing but a liar during the entire case. Before the hearing three different psychologists was ordered to execute a psychosexual evaluation on Donaldson.
The marriage of Don and Joan Peterson was one that might be considered a fairytale at its earliest stages. They were the all-American couple living in the picket-fenced neighborhood that everyone adored. But under the surface though, there was something wrong; something terribly, horribly wrong. Joan came from a single mother with a modest background. Through her early school years, it became quite apparent that she was brilliant.

Her face was full of concentration as she reminisced decades of memories that flooded into the interview. Her life was not easy, but she worked hard to get through tough situations in her childhood. Charlotte started off in Wagner, South Dakota, born on June 29, 1949.
First, the victim was taken to a hospital for a rape examination and her clothing and bedspread were collected as evidence. The laboratory found sperm evidence in the rape kit, on the victim’s jumpsuit, and on a blanket, which matched Good’s blood type and one-third of the caucasian male population (Haynes: Circuit judge). This shows that there was evidence but not enough evidence to say it was Donald Good. Next, Good was convicted on the spot. Good spent more than seven years in jail for rape and murder has been exonerated because of a tainted testimony from a former State Police chemist.

What You Do In the Dark Shall Come to Light “Nobody’s ever been arrested for a murder; they have only ever been arrested for not planning it properly”(Hayes) There has always been murders out there but it is the unintelligent ones who get caught. Rather it is a baby farmer who is rumored to have killed over 400 children, a man who decided to control women and bending them to his own sadistic desires, or a woman who rapes, mutilates, and kills girls with her husband. Not all the skeletons in Britain’s closet are as well known as Jack the Ripper but they are just as cruel and unusual serial killers, such as Amelia Dyer, and the couple Fred and Rosemary West .
Because the parents had seven other children, authorities had to be involved so early on. The state police were there to investigate what actually happened to the baby. Children and Youth were there to make sure the other seven boys were safe and protected, as they should be. The court was involved because they needed to decide if the children were able to remain home with their parents. Lastly, the coroner was involved because he was needed to tell what he believed
Mitochondrial DNA testing showed that none of the 15 hairs matched Courtney” (Innocence Project). If the Tulsa Department approved of the Innocence Project instead of rejecting there offer in 2001, Courtney would’ve been innocent long time ago. After Innocence Project help out Sedrick Courtney’s case and proved him innocent, he decides to settle a lawsuit with the city of Tulsa but he also received a state compensation of $175,000. “On July 19, 2012, a Tulsa County District judge granted the Innocence Project’s motion to exonerate Courtney” (Innocence Project).

The police officers arrived at the house and arrested Charlie that night. Charlie claimed that he had to kill his father because his father was going to kill his mom. No one was convicted at the trial because the judge was not able to come to a conclusion. I believe Charlie killed his father.
Confessions are irresistibly persuasive, and the effects cannot be reversed. Once a confession is given, it corrupts everything else, trumping DNA evidence and even changing witness testimonies. With the prosecutor’s argument of “just because we didn’t get all of them doesn’t mean we didn’t get all of them,” the public was completely convinced that the boys had committed the crime, and once a strong belief that somebody is guilty of a crime is formed, the contradictory details do not matter. The evidence may not fit the accusation, but they do not fundamentally change the belief in their guilt. To ensure that instances of excessive use of force are either discredited or framed within the “one bad apple” theory, the authorities fabricated a story to the press and labeled the boys as the “rotten” individuals who conspired with a sixth person (Beckett and
