Eugene Williams: The Chicago Race Riots Of 1919

The Tulsa Race Riot was the destruction of Black Wall Street in 1921, which was caused by an allegation of a white woman accusing a black man of rape. It lasted from May 31st to June 1st. The Tulsa Race Riot caused plenty of damage from “dozens of deaths [and] hundreds of injuries” to the destruction of Black Wall Street leading to unemployment of the black community (Hoberock n. pag.). An estimated property loss was over $2.3 million. This was an important event in our Nation’s history because “it teaches how far hatred [and violence] can go” (Hoberock n. pag.).

In 1908, a violent 2-day race riot in Springfield, Illinois drove thousands of African-Americans from the city. There was news in Springfield, Illinois about a white woman being assaulted by a black man. Soon after, a similar incident happened. These incidents happened one after another with just hours in between. An angry mob of whites soon formed in response.

The population in western regions grew exponentially after the construction of railroads. For example, Chicago’s population tripled from 1850 to 1860, and railroads were the main reason for the city’s population growth. By 1852, a large percentage of Chicago’s wheat was arriving by trains. The railroads passing through Chicago made the city commercially important to the economy.

The “Black Great Migration” represents one of the greatest social, political, and economic alterations in American history.

The deadliest race riot in the United States occurred between May 30 and June 1, 1921. The city of Tulsa grew from 10,000 to 100,000 in just 11 years (3.) Down town Tulsa offered all white residents anything from furniture stores to speakeasies (3.) Segregation forced African Americans to create their own community. This community was known as Greenwood or "The Black Wall Street" (2.)

For an African-American during the New York City Draft Riots of 1863 the events that took place would be described as nothing less than horrific. This was caused when the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863. This stated all slaves within any State, or designated part of a State still in rebellion shall be granted freedom. If any southern state returned to the Union between September and January, whites in that state suppositionally would not lose ownership of their slaves. Despite its limits, free blacks, slaves, and abolitionists across the country considered it as one of the most important actions on behalf of freedom in our nation's history.

“Colored” and “White” displayed all over the town, low wages, horrible treatment, and the constant belittlement of African-Americans were reoccurring issues colored people went through in the South. In the South people always had to stay light on their feet, and could never really just think for himself or just plainly be themself. In the South people were in constant worry about how they had to talk to whites, how they acted around whites, and worried about even coming into contact with someone who’s white. In contrast , in Chicago no one was worried about anyone or any type of business, but their own.

Major race riots have occurred in the United States at least since the Harlem Riots of 1948. Although the race riots that took place in the United States during the 1960’s were the direct result of the serious grievances of a minority racial group. An already frustrated and angry black population in America's cities violently took that sense of unfairness to the streets in the form of demonstrations, looting, and the destruction of property. Under the Declaration Independence, it says that everyone has the right to life. In America that does not apply to black people. In the early 1920s, there was a large race riot in Tulsa around 300 innocent black people were killed. It started when black shoe shiner Dick Rowland was arrested after being accused of assaulting a white woman in elevator published by a paper eager to win the local circulation war with the title “To Lynch Negro Tonight”. Whites gathered outside the courthouse of where Rowland was being held to lynch him, blacks came from Greenwood to protect Rowland.

The safety of blacks was slowly lowering as the southerners, or democrats, were once again dehumanizing them. With this progress, came violence. Blacks finally had a platform that they could utilize to the best of their abilities and finally make a change not only for them, but for everyone else that opposed them. The Chicago Race Riots of 1919 was a major conflict that began in Chicago Illinois because of racial tension between black and whites because of cultural differences. The Chicago race riots is also referred to as the “Red Summer” because of all the bloodshed that took place the summer after World war 1. The race riots began on July 27th, 1919 and ended August 3rd, 1919. On the first day of the riots thirty eight people died, 23 were black, 15 were white and 537 people. The race riots are a part of Chicago’s history that had a major affect on racial, political and social problems.

Cincinnati had race riots going on since the 1800’s. A riot is a public outbreak of fights and violence between two racial groups in a community. One outbreak started in 1829 between Irish immigrants and African Americans for jobs in Cincinnati. Their goal was to get rid of the Black African Americans. They were wanting the African Americans to move to Canada or get out of Cincinnati period.

The Impact of the Detroit Race Riot on Society Just imagine you are in the streets of Detroit in 1967. There are fires blazing all around you, people are being shot ruthlessly and police are using heavy force to stop the rioters. That is how the people of Detroit felt during one of the most deadly events in Detroit history. Some people even thought it was the start of a second revolution, This is a quote from Jeffrey Eugenides. “ In Detroit, in July of 1967,what happened was no less than a guerrilla uprising.

The defeat caused major rioting due to Jack Johnson being African American beating a white top heavyweight champion. The riots caused by the win of Jack Jefferies had hundreds of African Americans to be brutally mistreated and seriously injured. There are records shown that there were only 11-26 people killed during this riot. And so this influenced racial tension already believed to be existing in society. Before 1919, when World War 1, ending in the late 1918s the African Americans who had risked their lives fighting for freedom, and equal rights as the whites received the rights they deserved under the law.

The Jim Crow Laws put in place were absolutely ridiculous and inhumane not to mention unbelievable that in the 20th century these things were still taking place. Blacks were segregated from schools, hospitals, transportation, bathrooms, and even something as simple as playing any type of cards or dice with anyone who wasn’t part of the black race. For these reasons the civil rights era was spiraling out of control so severely that the president of the United States had to intervene and send in the National Guard. Thankfully the country had leaders like Malcolm, King, and President Kennedy to name a few to offer their strength and commitment to the cause of helping people of color through those difficult
