Depending on whether the text or commercial is meant to inform, persuade, or simply entertain, there is always a purpose behind it. However, it’s up to the reader or viewer to comprehend what he or she is viewing. Also, it’s important to determine the genre, audience, purpose, and situation when one is comprehending what he or she is reading. For the first article, “The Media is Perpetuating a Dangerous Myth About Mental Illness” by Lindsay Holmes, the genre of the text is an informational article. The article was written for all people, but mostly for young adults and older adults that watch tv. This audience was chosen, because they’re in a better position to interpret the message and the effects of how mental illness is depicted in the media. The purpose of the article is to explain how media furthers the stigma on mental illness and its correlation to violence. The situation of the article is negating the research found that links mental health conditions to violence towards other people in over a third of all news stories (Holmes). Unfortunately, statistics prove that whenever mental illness makes an appearance in the media, it’s accompanied with acts of violence. His main goal was to make it to Alaska just to enjoy his life in peace but along the way, he ran into tons of issues that cost him stress and even his life. Jon effectively convinces his audience through statistics and surveys paired with emotional stories.
The way that the authors used logos was the fact that both are all about the facts. A lot of the article talks about straight facts and how things happened throughout the era of the Holocaust. They talk about how rules were written to keep the children safe and how to do so without people questioning them. An exact number of how many kids were saved is not known. Other facts that do a good job and support their claim can catch the reader’s eye.

The picture I chose, shows an image that is in the public eye of today’s society, the image of smoking and how people can be affected by it. In this picture, viewers can see how smoking can really affect one’s life and how the addiction can be harmful to not only the outside of the body, but also the inside. This photo shows a controversial side of the appeal that people become addicted to cigarettes and, even after trying to go cold turkey, some people still cannot get over the addiction. The first thing that is noticed is the noose. The noose is being wrapped around the woman’s neck comparing the cigarette to the noose in attempt to show death.
The process for this speech was as follows, first was to decide what the speech topic would be. You gave me the idea of travel insurance during a conversation about the informative speech.
