Literary Devices Strengthen Arguments Ethos can be described as “the character or emotions of a speaker that is expressed in the attempt to persuade an audience” according to the Britannica encyclopedia. Ethos provides credibility for Jeffery Selingo in his piece “Why more teenagers and college students Need to Work While in School,” he argues about college students and working while getting an education. He brings up many points and strengthens his points through the use of literary and rhetorical devices. For instance, he backs up his argument by providing logos to give factual information that readers can trust. Throughout Selingos’ argumentative piece, he uses statistics, other people's information, and words that have distinct feelings. …show more content…
Logos can back up what is being said, and strengthen what is being argued. Selingo talks about how students go into college with no experience in jobs and he backs this up with “The number of teenagers who have some sort of job while in school has dropped from nearly 40% in 1990 to just 205 today, an all-time low since the United states started keeping track in 1948,” (paragraph 2). This backs up what is being said by using real data from real sources to give the reader real insight and side with Selingo. Logos can also be used to ensure that what the reader is reading is factual. Selingo talks about how students would work full time and that “they would earn only $15,000 a year at federal minimum wage. That’s about half of the published tuition price at an average…,” (paragraph 9). Logos help strengthen the argument here and shows the reader real information so that the reader can get a grasp on the real-life effects of getting a job while pursuing an education. Logos can also be shown through graphs. In “1889-1990 Americans in school and working worked an average of 30 hours and had around $10,000 in student debt” (table 1). This is real data that can show exact numbers and give the reader a little bit more insight into Selingo’s …show more content…
Loaded words can help show the reader if there is a negative or positive tone in a paragraph or sentence. Students try and work hard but “the behaviors they found were unacceptable” (paragraph 12). In this sentence, the word unacceptable shows that the behavior is bad and that it is negative, and this can persuade the reader's feelings to side with Selingo. Loaded words can also help Selingo get his point across. Getting a job can be difficult especially “on a lackluster youth job market…” (paragraph 3). The word lackluster has a negative connotation and it helps Selingo show that the youth job market is horrible it is crazy. The one word changes the whole feeling of the sentence and that's why loaded words do so well in getting a point across. Loaded words can also persuade the reader to side with Selingo. Students do not know what it is like “learning from failures or hardships…” (paragraph 5). The word failure in this instance is a loaded word due to its very negative connotation, this word shows that college students do not have much experience and it would make the reader feel like students need to be working while getting an
This is how a you tube usually tends to look like it’s a video and you have the title of what you re trying to promote. In this case The man is advertising burger king. When it comes to making a video ad the most important thing you need to add is Pathos. If it doesn't have pathos the viewer won't get attached to video and won't find it effective or interesting.
War is an intense armed conflict between groups, generally characterized by extreme violence, destruction, and morality. Tim Collins, a British Army Officer, is best known for his role in the Iraq War in 2003. Additionally, he is known for his eve-of-battle speech. Before the battle, he spoke out to the 1st Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment in Iraq in 2003. Collins uses pathos and logos to convey the message of fighting toward a common goal of liberation, rather than maltreatment, to his troops.

This paragraph will critique the group’s ethos used throughout the essay. First, it was great to start the introduction paragraph with information for the reader to know what to expect the essay to be about. Secondly, referring to the seventh paragraph, it is the best paragraph using ethos. It uses many credible sources from the citations. It displays the knowledge the group have about the material with many examples and it was executed well with strong use of word choice.
Quintyn Brady Zaivion Cade Debra Giles Molinda Hollie Zharia Simmons Title Abe Fortas makes a better argument due to his wide variety of rhetorical devices, contributing information on the circumstances of the case properly educating the audience on what’s being presented. Fortas’ management of rhetorical devices gives a clear viewpoint of different perspectives being confronted to the audience. Abe Fortas uses superb diction throughout his argument in the Tinker v. Des Moines case. For instance, “That is the basis of our national strength and of the independence and vigor of Americans who grow up and live in the relatively permissive , often disputatious society.”
Essay 2 The Essay “Lean In: What Would You Do If You Weren’t Afraid?” written by Sheryl Sandberg persuades women to come together in the movement to make the world equal. She discusses the various life challenges she faces, and talks about the controversial topic of equal rights and women equality in the work force.
Diction played a big part in creating such an intriguing novel. The use of foul language and uneducated speech relates to the theme of wealth/ poverty. Most needy people, living in a bad neighborhood get affected in a way that eliminates their education opportunities. Speech and vocabulary have much to do with environment and the types of conversations you hear/participate in. In the book, Mike Inverso says “You want the f*cking truck or you want I should tell Thin Jimmy Eddie Passarelli says no thanks he don’t want no wiseguy’s truck?”
Effective writing is done in several different ways, one of which is through the rhetorical triangle. The rhetorical triangle comprises of ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos appeals to moral character, credibility, and tone. Logos is facts, statistics, and reason. While pathos is about emotion, impact, and personal connection.
For my poster, I established logos by addressing the benefits of taking a break when feeling overwhelmed with schoolwork, reminders, and notifications. By addressing the benefits and importance of taking a short break in college, I appealed to logical reasoning by stating specific examples of how taking a break during schoolwork and studying can be beneficial and even help students perform better when they are more rested. Moreover, by addressing the importance of taking a break, I supported my main point of view on the issue of feeling stressed and overwhelmed in college by addressing specific reasons the spring semester or the beginning of any semester can cause many students to stress, including syllabus week, adjusting to new classes, and viewing deadlines for various assignments. Furthermore, I appealed to logical reasoning in my poster by stating how all college students experience some form of stress and that the beginning of the spring semester can be stressful, so that the audience may understand why the benefits of taking our break are significant to my main point. By using logical reasoning to support my point, I desired to develop pathos and logos through the same information by explaining the benefits of taking a break, which appeals to logos by providing important information and pathos by creating empathy in a student audience who can understand the
Adding descriptive words to each sentence can make the writing less of a bore to read. In the book Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan, one way figurative language makes a sentence more interesting is, “…filled the room with a rising march” (Ryan p.g. 356) The author could have just said, the music filled the room but by adding descriptive words it can make reading that sentence more interesting than just the base sentence.
In my classical argumentation essay, I used several rhetorical strategies in order to make my essay more appealing and convincing towards my readers. In my essay, I used rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos). I used logos by providing statistics on the amount of children that are not in school and the amount of children that are employed in places like India, Nigeria and Brazil. I then used pathos by providing facts on how children are placed in hazardous environments and their lack of education. I used ethos by providing the authors of the sources that I used, who are experts in their respective fields.
Logos is a very prominent rhetorical device in Lamott's argument as she is presenting several amounts of reasoning within her writing. Lamott explains that writing a first draft is allowing “childlike” expression without judgment. (1) She argues that the first draft may serve as a platform for the drafts that follow, and in turn, this allows for the refinement of ideas to occur. As Lamott describes the writing process, she also states that “if the kid wants to get into really sentimental, weepy, emotional territory, you let him.” (1) Through this she can emphasize the logicality of writing the way that you personally want to write.

What do the human eyes and mind allow some to see when looking at images? What the eyes allow those to see is called how the mind interprets images. Everyone analyzes images differently than others. These three images show logos, pathos, and ethos, but they also show many stories and methods on how humans need to watch their health. The human body cannot function properly if those do not watch their healthy habits.
Context, Purpose and Audience Text one, a charity advertisement created by World Vision, displays the lengthy walk that young children take every day to collect dirty water. It has a worldwide context that is used to raise awareness for the deprived children living in third world countries and it is clearly identified in the short film that they are an organisation that have been shaped around supporting individuals that live with disadvantages and are exposed to horrific conditions on a daily basis. Text two is a leaflet published by the Salvation Army in relation to homeless people living on the streets in winter. The Australian context of this pamphlet is acknowledged through the website specified and the text saying, “Tonight, as many
