In the movie Crimson Tide, we look to the question ethical decisions, and what someone would do when thrown into a situation that made them question themselves, and who they serve for. In this example, when serving in the United States Military, once a solider is given orders, that solider must follow the orders out and not to question them. The trust between the solider and the higher command giving orders is almost based on blind faith. The solider relies on the higher commands decision of protecting democracy, even if someone, or a lot of people are killed. Is it an ethical decision to follow a commander’s order even if it means killing mass numbers of innocent civilians? Captain Frank Ramsey, a submarine commander receives orders to fire his nuclear weapons. While a second order struggles to arrive but is interfered halfway through transmission, now the commander of the boat is unsure what the second order says. Is it not to fire the weapons, or is it a warning? The commander now has two sets of orders, and is being pressured to wait to reestablish connection by Commander Ron Hunter, than to act on the first orders. …show more content…
Hunter previously states that; “the true nature of war is to serve itself and leave the world destroyed.” While Captain Frank Ramsey, rose through the military ranks, to his current position, he takes Hunter’s advice, but does not seem to listen to it because of their backgrounds. When making an ethical decision, many factors affect the process. In this example, it is pressure from your peers, the men on board, the military, and the people of the united states the swore to protect. Ramsey understands that if he does not act quickly his country is at stake, as well as what the Untied States stands for,
(Need Intro Sentence) Major General William S. Rosecrans was a great charmer and extremely charismatic. Immediately, upon his promotion to commander of the Army of the Cumberland, his troops loved and respected him.1 He was also, quick-tempered and would not hold back his hot headed opinions.2 This caused him to bump heads with the Secretary of Defense.3 While MG Rosecrans’ senior generals trusted him, his temper caused issues during the battle at Chickamauga.4 For instance, General Rosecran directed one of his staff officer, Major Frank S. Bond to write a dispatch to Brigadier General Thomas Wood stating if BG Brannan moves his men then BG Wood must close his line to the left of ____ Reynolds. Major Bond wrote, “The general commanding

Should orders to kill civilians be followed? In Syria, helicopters and jets bomb cities and have learned to target Syrian volunteer White Helmets on second bombing runs. The Syrian government has on several occasions gassed its own people with chemical weapons. These orders from authority figures continue to easily influence violent action against the innocent and unarmed countrymen. Just as the pilots have a choice to be inaccurate with their payloads as to minimize casualties, the Hutu did have a choice to not kill.
’’ Many of the soldiers know their actions are bad, but they refuse to stand up for
Stanley Milgram, a Yale University psychologist, shares his results from an experiment he conducted in 1963 regarding the obedience to authority in “The Perils of Obedience.” His experiment illustrates that when placed under peculiar circumstances, ordinary citizens are capable of performing terrible and unexpected actions (Milgram 85). Milgram rationalizes these proceedings by concluding that the average individual will decide to please the experimenter rather than resist his authority to protect the well-being of the learner (Milgram 86). Herbert C. Kelman, a Harvard University Social Ethics professor, and V. Lee Hamilton, a former University of Maryland Sociology chair, share of a U.S. military massacre in “The My Lai Massacre: A Military
The only potential hole in Captain Baum’s credibly in exercising disciplined initiative is the legitimacy of the mission itself. It was unethical for General Patton to risk the lives of more than three-hundred men in order to save his son-in-law. It was potentially unethical and showed a lack of personal courage for those who knew about it to not confront or oppose General Patton on the matter. However, Captain Baum exercised very disciplined initiative towards accomplishing the
Thinking with a humane mindset it is more ethical to continue to fight a long and hard struggle, rather than slaughter many innocent
Man, woman, child… terrorist. Trained in the crucible of Marines, to be the most devastating killing machine at the age of 19 or a martyr for weakness. The day I shot my rifle in combat has been imprinted in my mind as permanent as the ink on my body or the scars that tell the stories of war. Do I follow through?

For example, Francis says “when i fell on that grenade, I wasn't trying to save those GI’s” (Cormier 113). Francis was to much of a coward to kill himself. He decided to go to the war and get killed honorable way . Since he figured he will get killed there.

Thank you for sharing your ethical dilemma, Marie. A similar incident occurred at my workplace, where a nurse did not do round her patients until shift change. The patient has expired during the night without her knowledge. As nurses, our reputation, integrity, honesty, and ethical principles are always on the line. As stated by Harris (2015), the foundation of the nursing code of ethics is based on compassion, respect, accountability, commitment and advocacy, as nurses, we use these qualities to promote health, safety, competency, integrity and professional growth.
Having completed the mathematical computations, the option that is morally permissible as well as generating the highest net utility is Maria electing to spend the night with Bethany at her workplace until morning. The primary ethical dilemma belongs to the decisions made within the situation Maria is currently present for, even though she was not the cause of said situation. At first glance, Maria was merely acting from the perspective of an individual adhering to the Natural Law Theory. Since it was clearly stated that she rejected the conflict of interest restrictions and referred to them as “idealistic”, she proceeds to display a concise understanding of the Natural Law Theory by promoting all six universal human goods. The restrictions implemented by the organization or agency from which she is employed reveal yet another example

Garrett Hardin was a renowned Americans philosopher received his PhD in microbiology from Stanford University. He has written several books and articles that mainly focus on ecology, and throughout his life, has constantly forewarned the world about the risks of overpopulation. Due to his deep understanding of ecology, and due to the intensive research the author has done on this particular topic, Hardin is credible to write an article about this topic. Moreover, Hardin’s main purpose in writing this piece is to persuade the readers, the population of the rich countries and their governments, not to help the poorer countries.
