College sports are a lucrative business. March Madness, an end of season tournament for College Basketball, is televised for three weeks and was viewed by 10.7 million people in 2022. This is the reason that $3.1 billion was spent on sports betting in March and April of 2022. Yet up until the NCAA v Alston court case in 2021, not one off the participating players was getting paid for playing college basketball. Is this fair? If the winning teams are generating the fans and the T.V contracts, should these amateur players be compensated? No. College athletes should not be compensated because college athletes can always make their way up to the pros and get paid more money, very few college athletes will

They think it’s a good opportunity for them to earn money and prepare themselves for the pros. One reason is because these athletes “take great physical risks to play their sports and put their future earning potential at risk” (Maryville 10). They go to practices every day and travel across the United States to play a sport they love and they want to go pro someday. The idea of them getting paid motivates them to try harder in games. In fact, “College sports bring in tremendous amounts of money. Football, basketball, and baseball, in particular, generate billions of dollars a year for colleges in ticket sales, merchandise sales, and advertisements” (Drew 1). Because of how much money is being earned by a school, college athletes could earn some of this money. But, the school might use the money on other things such as campus needs. But, “ensuring that student-athletes are paid may not only alleviate the financial burden that some families face when sending their children to college. It may also encourage college athletes to stay for education before going pro” (Bouchrika 4). If these college athletes are being paid college benefits, they might want to stay at the college a full four years so they can graduate and this would have a big benefit for other schools. While many people approve of college athletes being compensated, there are far more reasons why college athletes should not be …show more content…

2019, www.theperspective.com/debates/sports/college-athletes-get-paid/. Summary: In the bottom section of this article, the author delves into a couple specific reasons why college athletes do not need or deserve compensation. Piccioto talks more about the harm that compensation for college athletes does to them, rather than the harm done to the universities. Piccioto suggests that paying college athletes takes away from what college actually is and he argues that the athletes should be treated as normal students, since they really are.
College Varsity Athletes Should be Paid In this paper, I argue that college varsity athletes should be paid for playing sports that bring in revenue. In particular, College football and basketball because they bring in the majority of the revenue for the schools. The revenue accomplished by college sports programs continues to increase, due to the growth in interest of the NCAA basketball tournament and the college football playoffs (Berry III, Page 270). Throughout the past few years, one of the main topics debated in college sports is whether or not the athletes should be paid.
Scholarships do not cover all the expenses and athletes do not have time to work to pay off debt. Since scholarships do not cover everything, athletes should get paid so they do not graduate largely in debt. The large debt would accumulate over the course of their four year stay at the college. The payment would be very similar to what they would get if they were working a job because they have spent a majority of their time with their sport. Furthermore most athletes do not receive full ride scholarships or student loans being schooled only have a limit number to offer.
College Athletes: Should They Get Paid? The controversial debate on whether or not collegiate athletes should be able to profit from their name, image, and likeness has been going on for as long as the brain can think. Each year, year-round, college athletics generate tens of thousands of dollars for their respective institutions, only for athletes to see none of that money. It is believed by many that the scholarships athletes receive is enough to compensate, along with the presented argument that allowing college athletes to make money makes college athletics political and takes away from integrity of the business. To oppose, not all sports give athletic scholarships, and even when they do, it still isn’t enough to compensate for an athletes’
They may say that the athletes are good to receive a higher education for free or lesser costs, which is already a form of payment. However, what people fail to recognize is the large amount of time and dedication these athletes put into their sport. They juggle both training/practice schedules with large amounts of academic coursework. Moreover, their athletic abilities generate millions of dollars for their collages and NCAA(National Collegiate Athletic Association) yet they do not see a dollar themselves. It's only fair that these student athletes should receive some money for the value they bring to the table for there
Leo Kaplan Ms. Skemp-Cook Academic Writing 8 May 2023 The Case For Paying College Athletes College athletes are not receiving the respect they deserve. They work day after day putting in the effort to contend for division championships and earn their team money but in the process, they are not being compensated in return. With schools collecting tons of revenue every year, college programs should have no problem paying athletes. For example, the Department of Education has stated that in 2019, college athletic programs earned $14 billion, which was a major increase from $4 billion in 2003 (Drozdowski).
College athletes should get paid Have you ever wondered why there is a major crisis with fees and expenses in college? Many people suffer with debt issues and sometimes have to drop out. Some people have even dropped out of their team because it's a waste of time and without having some type of help there's no energy enough for you to try your best. Within College expenses, they have gotten higher and higher over time. First off, college athletes have to have a way to pay for school.
Most colleges force their athletes to take classes that do not interfere with their sport, which makes their college experience not about education at all. Also, only about 2 percent of college athletes actually go on to become professional athletes, says Bob Willaims, Senior Vice President of Communication for the NCAA on page 23 of Junior Scholastic’s article about paying college athletes. This makes it so that if a college athlete is not able to become a professional athlete for any reason, their future is basically doomed. This can cause the lives of the player, and his or her family financially and mentally. However, if these college athletes got paid, at least they would have some funds to work off of to support themselves.
College athletes put in a lot of time, effort, and work into the sport they’ve played since they were young, but they aren’t getting paid for it. These student athletes deserve to be paid because they put in countless hours of hard work and balance sports with school work. The first reason athletes in college do deserve to be compensated is because they don 't have time to fit in work with a school and athletic schedule. College athletes don’t have time to get a real job. Student athletes have a very busy schedule, they don’t have time to fit in a job.
College athletes take many risks and make personal sacrifices in order to bring in revenue for their school, for this reason, they should be paid employees. The first reason in why college athletes should be paid is that college athletes take many risks. Depending on the scholarship, if an athlete is injured and unable to play they can lose their
If colleges began to pay their athletes, then they could build a bad reputation for being mercenary and lose their educational reputation If they are allowed to play, then it can be financially detrimental to the college because there are many flaws in the system. College athletes should not be compensated for their actions regarding athletic activities, no matter what sport or level they compete on. The idea that college athletes should or shouldn 't be paid
Should college athletes be paid? Annotated Bibliography Benedykiuck, Mike. “The Blue Line: College athletes should be paid.” Dailyfreepress.
The million dollar question; should college athletes be paid? This is an immense debate, but if you were to ask me, I would say yes, college athletes should be paid. There are a plethora of reasons why college athletes should get paid. College athletes should get paid because of the amount of time they put into their sport, the amount of money everyone else is making off of them, and their overall importance to the school. There are a myriad of reasons that people can argue the opposite way, but, the reasons they should get paid definitely outweigh the reasons they shouldn’t get paid.
Are they students or employees? They spend more time with the sport than in school. Student athletes should be acknowledged for their performances. College athletes should be paid to play because they bring money into the school, advertisement, and they perform the same tasks of pros. College kids bring in thousands of dollars every game day.
A growing debate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association is whether or not student athletes should be paid. The controversy began in 2011 after three hundred coaches and athletes signed a petition to pay college-level athletes, and since then other athletes have made several more arguments. The NCAA has rightfully denied all of the requests, saying they include too much. To pay student athletes could be hugely expensive for colleges, especially because they would not only pay for each athlete’s degree and equipment, but also provide a salary and give bonuses revenue for tournaments. Moreover, college athletes should not be paid because there is not enough money, it takes away a student’s focus from schoolwork, and not every athlete is guaranteed a professional career after graduating; however it is argued that it they are already paid in a way.
