The Progressive Era was a time in United Sates History (roughly between 1890 and 1920) that bolstered unparalleled reform across America. Consisting of multiple social welfare reforms, three constitutional amendments, and numerous international policy changes, the Progressive Era resulted in very distinct changes throughout the country. One area of reform heavily emphasized by the movement was social welfare. Movements regarding social welfare aimed to confront and reform the growing gap in American society. As a result of the industrialization preceding and continuing into the Progressive Era, there was a disparity of wealth never before seen in American history.

The Progressive movement was a period of widespread social activism and political reform across the United States. This period of time focused on improving society in the United States—who needed to see change after the negative nation that was brought forth by the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution shifted the United States to a manufacturing economy where products were no longer made solely by hand but by machines, which introduced pollution and hardships for workers. Workers frequently suffered from health problems due to malnutrition, and as cities grew during this period of time there wasn’t enough housing for all the new inhabitants, which affected living conditions for workers. Progressive Movement Moving on from the Gilded age, the Progressive Era marked its place in history in the early 20th century. This movement started to take off when famous journalists were exposing the corruption of the work place, and politicians. Many issues came about with suffrage, and segregation, thus, helping to enforce the 17th, 18th, and 19th amendments. The political system was changing and the population was growing, but what really shaped the Progressive Era?

The post-World War I era sought plenty of events that impacted the lives of Americans in a way that most of the population had to modify their living to accommodate to the new laws being passed and inventions being created. Before the 1920s, the Progressive Era that began in 1890 and ended in 1920 was a period of time that sought to eliminate much of society’s problems, including the corruption within government. The progressive era advanced America where it lacked the most, it improved countless lives for the overall betterment of American society. There most definitely “good people” that were protected from “bad interests” by the reforms. Reforms were needed in corruption in labor, to government, issues in socialism, rights, trusts, the list was never ending until the reforms that shaped our country into much like what it has become today. During the progressive era our country faced many problems. The rise of substantial businesses caused industrial problems. Women suffrage, alcohol, child labor, and safety issues caused social problems. The necessitation of citizens in government decisions also caused political problems. Progressives were people who wanted to solve all of these quandaries.

The Progressive era was a very important time period that changed how people perceive the world. The Progressive era was the age that made different views acceptable and actually encouraged. People with influence started to support minorities and views that have had little to none support. During this time progressivism exploded, and the world was changing. Progressive ideas, or new/futuristic ideas that people had were accepted.

The Progressive Era in history of the United States is considered to be during the years of 1890 and 1920 (Byron, 2017). There were four amendments added to the Constitution of the United States during this time. On February 3, 1913, the 16th amendment was adopted by congress which levied a federal income tax. The 17th amendment was adopted in November of 1914 during a nationwide election. The 17th amendment established the way senators were elected and the rules of special appointments.

The early 1900s were a time of widespread social and political change in America. During this time, many Americans adopted new, more modern ideas about labor, cultural diversity and city life. Some of these Progressive ideas were brought about by the need for reform in the workplace due to the grown of large companies and rapid industrialization. Not everyone supported the ideas of the Progressive Movement, however. Anti-Progressives, especially in the South, preferred traditional, rural lifestyles, and a slower, simpler way of living.

The Gilded age was a period in the late 1800s (1865-1900) that showed tremendous increase of wealth caused by the industrial age. The lifestyle of the rich during this period hid the many problems of the time that eventually brought about the progressive era movement. This was a movement for reform between 1900-1920s. Progressives typically held that the irresponsible actions of the rich were corrupting both public and private life. Forces such as immigration, the Populist Party and industrialization that led to the progressive era also impacted the American government both in its activeness and its democracy.

The Progressive Era came to an end with World War I as the war exposed humanity's potential for large-scale cruelty (Social Welfare History Project, 2017). National politics took a part in the ending of the Progressive era. The Red Scare was a part of that because America had a fear that the United States would be vulnerable to a communist takeover (Schultz, 2013). America was not meant to be a communist country. Another issue they faced was with race.

Instead the Reconstruction caused the major issue of having to incorporate freed slaves into an American society increasing the demand of jobs and housing. The main issue from this was that despite the amendments being passed and federal law claiming that no state shall make their own laws, the Southern states decided to create their own laws known as the black codes. Document Collection 4 states how the laws restricted the rights of freed slaves and made them feel like slaves. Examples of such laws are not being able to come near the town unless specified by your master, not being able to rent or own housing under any circumstance, and etc. It proves how the South had a different view on slaves being emancipated and how they were willing to falsely accuse someone just because they were black.

Jane Addams The Progressive Era, 1890-1920, accomplished great change in the Unites States of America. Many reformers and activits demanded for change in education, food and drug policies, and most importantly the govermenet. The goal for the movement was the purify the nation. One of the main activits during this time was Jane Addams. Jane Addams is often refered to as a social and political pioneer.

The Progressive Reform Movement The Progressive Era is often looked as an age of reformation from the economic boom in the Gilded Age. From around 1890 to 1920s, citizens of the progressive reform movement had plans to amplify our American government and economy. The different outlooks and biases have created many interpretations of this era, along with many others. Historians have many different interpretations of the reform movement during the Progressive Era.

The progressives, wanted to create a society that acted as one. The idea of being an individual was something to be forgotten in order to create a more perfect civilization of order and pureness. During this time of the progressive movement, the rest of society began to reject it ideology of their message and goals of non­pleasure and work.
