Symbols are all around us. Whether it be something like a stop sign or an object like a wedding ring, symbols are everywhere. Things can be symbols of good and symbols of evil and even the gray area between. In the story “Young Goodman Brown,” symbols of good and evil are present. The pink ribbon is a symbol that represents purity, innocence and gaiety as well as Goodman Brown’s wife and his spirituality. The staff shaped like a serpent is a symbol of the devil and evil. Goodman Brown knows that as he walks into the forest, he is walking with evil and is leaving his faith behind. Although he does not choose to take the devils offer he still turned his back on his faith, and as a result he becomes an old, bad-tempered, untrusting man.
Symbols can have hidden meanings. In “The Metamorphosis,” the gesture of food is a symbol love. We can see that Gregor’s sister takes all of the responsibility for Gregor’s well-being during Part 2 of the story. In “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” the first indicator Connie gets that something is off or dangerous about Arnold Friend is his flashy gold car. The car has outdated phrases written all over it, and it seems that Arnold himself is also outdated and not really right. When Arnold insists that Connie take a ride with him, the car becomes something entirely different. It becomes a symbol of the horrible and violent things that will befall Connie in the future. I think the car is an omen because after Arnold shows up that car is what holds Connie’s future. In the short story, “ The Possibility of Evil” author Shirley Jackson uses several symbols in her story. The symbols were used to tell her story about an old lady named Ms. Strangeworth. Three main symbols used through the story where her roses, the letters, and Ms. Strangeworth herself. Connie describes it as a "convertible jalopy painted gold." Meaning an old junky car painted gold to disguise what it really was. There are many times when Connie believes he is disguising his own looks. Oates writes, "he had shaggy, shabby black hair that looked crazy as a wig..." and later "He had to bend and adjust his boots. Evidently his feet did not go all the way down; the boots must have been stuffed with something so that he would seem taller.
In Joyce Carol Oates fictional short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” the majority of the story lies beneath the surface. More specifically than just the story, you realize that there is more to the character Arnold Friend than what may appear. The author has always remained silent and ambiguous about the real meaning of Arnold Friend’s true nature and she leaves room for the readers to make their own interpretation of him. Readers can analyze Arnold Friend and see him as the devil, he could just be the personification of popular music imagined by Connie in a dream, but Arnold Friend could also be the result of drug use.

The story of Young Goodman Brown is the story of a tale about the main character becoming aware of the hypocrisy of his faith as a Puritan. Through his travels in the woods at night, he unveils the truths, or what he believes as truths, about his wife Faith, neighbors, and fellow Christians. By the end, Brown loses all trust in his Faith, both literally and spiritually, and refuses to see any good in the world. The beginning scene where Goodman Brown meets the old man has the most significance in the story’s resolution. This is where his mistrust starts to form and where he experiences his first temptations to sin.
Journal A 1. Nathaniel Hawthorne “Young Goodman Brown” I really liked “Young Goodman Brown”. I enjoyed the heavy symbolism, puns, and biblical themes, which made me think and analyze more. It reminded me of the short tv series, Over the Garden Wall that aired on Cartoon Network, which also had dark,creepy symbols and was set in an unsettling limbo-like forest.
