What is new in the space travel world? Two article excerpts by author Cameron Keady “A Success in Space” and “America’s New Spacecraft” describe two space crafts with very different missions. The purpose of this essay is to explain the purpose of each mission and then argue which mission was the more successful. The first mission, as described in “A Success in Space,” used a small probe called the Philae lander, which had been dropped by Rosetta, a much larger craft that had been traveling 10 years prior to the drop of Philae. Philae, which is “about the size of a washing machine,” landed on the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko, also known as 67p. Its mission was to gather “valuable information about the origins of our solar system and how it evolved.” While on the comet, Philae tweeted a photo back to Rosetta about the breathtaking view. It took an entire decade to get to 67p, but Philae’s stay there will be short – only about 64 hours. However, Rosetta “will continue to travel with 67p, sending information about the comet back to Earth for as long as it can.” …show more content…
Its mission was designed to “test many of the most vital elements for human spaceflight . . . and provide critical data needed to improve Orion’s design for reduce rusks to future mission crews.” Even though the International Space Station is several miles into space, the Orion’s peak altitude was “more than 14 times farther from Earth” than the ISS. Both the flight and the landing were perfect. With the goal of eventually taking astronauts back to the moon or to Mars, Orion’s experimental voyage was considered a success. It tested the “capabilities of the spacecraft to ensure it is suitable for a future manned mission to the Red

Exploration to the New World led to greedy rulers wanting more. There were many new resources and opportunities to make money; for example tobacco, sugar, and even minerals. Because of the demand for these crops, the Europeans needed someone to do the work. With the Native American population drastically declining, the Europeans had to find another source of labor so they turned to the African Americans. This began the slave trade where millions of slaves were taken from Africa to other areas as a source of income.
During a long journey of a ten year flight to get next to the comet, Rosetta flew a distance away from the sun of 492 million miles (792 million kilometers). The space probe also made four “gravity assists” maneuvers three times around the Earth and once around Mars in order to gain
The successful launch shifted the nations focus from “life adjustment” to the National Defense Education Act (NDEA). Many government leaders blamed the “race to space” loss on education. They felt the current science and math curriculum wasn’t as rigorous as it ought to be. Millions of dollars
In a time of separation and unrest, the United States needed to be a united front against a common enemy with a common goal. The United States used the technological advances in space exploration and the rivalry with the Soviet Union to unite the citizens when tension was great among them. Space exploration milestones that occurred in the 1960s were important to the sense of pride of United States citizens. The Atlas Program and the Apollo Program were major successes in the eyes of the United States and set them apart from their opponent in the space race, the Soviet Union. Space exploration was very important to the 1960s because amongst the chaos of the revolutionary decade, the government was still able to boost morale and restore people’s
In a small city in Cheese Lake California, there lived a boy named Billy. He lived in a three bedroom house with his mom, dad, and sister. His whole family loved Star Wars;yet no one in the family was as enthusiastic about Star Wars then Billy. Standing at 4 feet 8 inches tall and with curly brown hair, Billy looked pretty short with his over sized Star Wars clothes on. In elementary school,Star Wars shirts were the only thing that Billy would wear to school, so he was planning to do the same middle school.
The current budget is a ninth of what it was in its heyday of the 60’s, yet missions continue to grow bolder[2]. NASA was born in the midsts of the Cold
y cover picture was taken at the Kennedy Space Center in Titusville, Florida, back in July 2007. My sister and I are pictured in front of the replica Space Shuttle Explorer. The rocket has since been moved to Houston, and was renamed Independence. The Kennedy Space Center is home to Launch Complex 39, which has been used for every NASA human space launch since 1972 (“Kennedy Space Center,” n.d.). Though the Kennedy Space Center only has space shuttles, the physics between the flight of an airplane, and flight of a rocket are very similar.
“Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly,” -John F. Kennedy. According to John F. Kennedy, in his famous speech, “Remarks at the Dedication of Aerospace Medical Health Center,” Kennedy strongly believed that America should take part in major space exploration. Readers should strongly agree with Kennedy’s position because there are medical and technological benefits. The first reason to agree with Kennedy’s position is that there are many medical benefits that can help improve modern medicine.

On the night of Wednesday, November 12th, 2014, the mission control room was buzzing with excitement with news concerning the spaceprobe, Philae. Philae, a spacecraft from the Rosetta Mission, had finally completed its journey, just barely landing safely on Comet 67P. Ten years ago, this landing was just a dream for the controllers of the European Space Agency, however, it became a reality with the collaboration of many astronautical engineers and scientists. The Rosetta satellite has been orbiting Comet 67P for the past ten years, taking pictures of the comet and sending the images back to mission control in Noordwijk, Netherlands. The purpose of this mission was to learn more about the seemingly icy surface of the comet to further speculate
Unquestionably, aviation and space travel have specifically and decisively contributed to the twentieth century’s progress. The aerial activity - particularly aviation (using heavier equipment than air) – has changed the transportation and communication between regions of the world. In the second half of the nineteenth century, they discovered airships (lighter than air flying machines) which had even enabled the communication between French forces during the encirclement of Paris by German armies in 1870-1871. While the Zeppelin couple’s airship balloon flies over the Lake de Constance since 07/09/1900, on 12/17/1903, the Wright brothers flew over North Carolina on a petrol airplane, the Flyer biplane which covers 3 km to 30 km/hr.
Sample-return missions are missions that have the goal of collecting samples from extraterrestrial locations to Earth for tests and analysis. As time progressed, space agencies like NASA want to eventually send humans to explore another planet, potentially Mars. Mars is the fourth planet in our solar system. One main goal of NASA is to colonize Mars. In order to accomplish this task, there needs to some samples collected from Mars.
When Neil Armstrong first touched down on the moon in 1969, millions of people watched him take the first step and create history (Villard). Yet even as we’ve moved on from the moon landings and consider them as a pivotal point for mankind, “Forty years after U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon, many conspiracy theorists still insist the Apollo 11 moon landing was an elaborate hoax”(Than). The idea that our voyage to the moon was deliberately staged seems to resurface year after year. While the conspiracy theorists claim the moon landing was a hoax, creating a fake moon landing would have been more expensive and difficult than actually reaching the moon. The race to the moon began on October 5, 1957, when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik into orbit around the earth: “When the Soviet Union launched the satellite Sputnik, on October 4, 1957, the United States experienced a technological identity crisis”(Olson).
