Culture is the shared characters of religion, language, symbols, values, norms, and routines of a specific group. With such a large concept like a culture, there’s bound to be more profound subgenres of cultures to better classify them. Subcultures are more compacted cultural groups within a vast culture. In addition to self-indulgent superiority complexes, a consumerist society also imposes social conformity. The green symbol claims “the way to live righteously is to enact one’s vignette with as much energy as possible, and oppose, as fiercely as possible, those who undercut the proper enactment of the sacred vignettes.” Individuals were created for “the sole purpose” to propagate consumerist messages; their ability to conform determines their right to live safely. Similarly capitalist societies with rampant consumerism believe individuals must earn housing and food through work. This mindset assumes social assistance breeds inefficient, dependent individuals and claims they deserve to suffer for their incompetence.

Every change comes with controversy, new radical ideas of the upcoming generation challenging the previous. Once deemed taboos become socially acceptable and ideas once thought absurd are altered to become social norms. The reaction to the punk subculture in Great Britain in the seventies is used to prove Hebdige’s thesis. The idea of social order is identified with language and discourse. The codes that shape language are often violated by members of subcultures such as punk.
