Social Problems in Societies
Social problems are issues which are considered to affect majority if not all members of a society either directly or indirectly. Whenever people come to live together in a social setting, conflict arises from their differences in opinions regarding political issues, religion, ethnic issues, cultural practices and other health and hygiene issues. In such a situation, we can say a society inevitably develops social problems. The various social issues present today vary from society to society, and as such, we cannot say that all societies face similar social issues. For example, the rich access different and better service from what the poor do, and this is responsible for quite a number of problems in societies. When the poor lack proper education, it results in a large number of them lacking employment and thus they indulge in crime, drug abuse, prostitution, even giving rise to incurable diseases. Poverty makes it hard for members of a society to access proper medical services which makes it tough to control spread of diseases, and ultimately death. According to the symbolic interactionism theory, humans are social animals and require interaction with one another. It studies social interactions between individuals and small groups and how humans interpret these interactions. In this respect, poverty can be eliminated by interaction with the right people in society. Poverty leads to most social problems in society but can be evaded or corrected with the correct perspective. Meaning of sociological imagination The sociologist, C Wright Mills said that the sociological imagination is a perspective on the world that helps us to see the links between society and the individual’s experiences and circumstances. The sociological imagination explains that external influences significally influence the individual’s motivations, way of thinking and social status in society. The sociological imagination attempts to understand human behaviour by placing it within a broader social context, as well as, observing the connections between what appears to be the personal problems of the individual compared to the larger social issues. A social problem is an aspect of life that people are concerned about and would like to change. It consists of two components: the objective requirement that an aspect of society can be measured. . The objective condition in the case of abortion entails the question whether abortions are legal, who obtains an abortion, and under what circumstances is an abortion secured (Henslin, 2008). The second component is the subjective condition; This is the concern that a significant number of people have regarding the objective condition. In the case of abortion, the personal condition involves distress that a pregnant woman must carry the unwanted baby to full term (Henslin, 2008).
These may include race, gender, and economic status. Because of this difficulty, many people get stuck in poverty and never become equal. They are also held down by themselves and their close friends and family. If those people aren’t well educated,
Poverty has been a major issue throughout the history till date, many nations are still fighting to solve this issue. They have been taking measures to eradicate poverty. However, many People are suffering from poverty, they have shortage of food, clothes and shelter which are the basic needs for a living. In the article “The Position of Poverty” by John Kenneth Galbraith a professor of economics at Harvard University. He talks about how an economy of a country affects poverty and how it can be eradicated.
With it being 2018 and America being one of the most diverse countries in the world, it faces many social problems. A social problem is any behavior or condition that has a negative effect for a large amount of people. As the population of America steadily increases so does the amount of social problems. This is because the more people there are, there is more opinions, beliefs, and cultures. America’s population today is 323 million people.
Monetary and Societal Obstacles Societal simply comes from the word society and it means relating to society. Monetary refers to money. In our society monetary and societal obstacles can intertwine. These obstacles can even build on each other. Consequently, this can cause bigger problems if they are not handled correctly.
Personal problems are specific to an individual. These are issues that are outside of the individual’s environment and control. If a large number of people experience this problem then that makes it a societal issue. These issues are both predictable and preventable. 2.2
My example of a singular explanation to a social problem is the accident rate while driving sky rocketed because of driving while intoxicated. Driving while intoxicated has cause many accidents but it is not the only reason that caused the collision rate to increase. Texting while driving is another reason the collision rate increased. Recently, it is said there are 10,550 alcohol related crashes while there were about 1.6 billion crashes caused by cell phones. Intoxication and texting while driving are the main reason collisions happen but there are many more, for example, running a stop light causes about 40 percent of the car collisions.
A social cause is any project that the members of the society personally support because they believe that it is their responsibility. These projects could be anything that benefit specific segments of society or the greater good of many. The diversity across the globe has contributed to the social changes that vary from one region to the other based on religion, politics, and ethnicity. Society is made up living individuals, who have the capability to reason for themselves, and this is the genesis of changes within the society. Development in any field is caused by a change from the normal way of doing things. Therefore, social change can be described as a transformation in a society way of conducting themselves. These changes have various impacts economically, socially and politically.
Society is made of individuals and hence there has be a profound change in the thought process of every individual in order to ensure smooth running of the society. This idea of the downfall of society because some individuals, is wonderfully brought out in the novel Lord of the Flies. The two World Wars left people speechless, their belief in each other started to dwindle. This sowed in the seeds of uncertainty amongst its members.
Many social problems existed back then. A social issue refers to an issue that influences and is opposed by a considerable number of individuals within a society. It is often created by others and is something out of an individual's. Shakespeare use his play The Tempest to comment on social issues that were present in his time. How do you define the harshness of society? Social Justice and Poverty is a hard concept to analyze when one does not have a clear understanding of the social justice structure and why most people living in poverty remain poor. Looking beyond the aspects of what causes everyday circumstances and situations, society must become more well-rounded to people living in poverty are lacking their everyday hierarchical needs. In a world with people who are very rich and people who are very poor, society tends to put their focus on making the rich richer. Poverty has swept over many cities, states and countries with low unemployment rates, child hunger, economic violence, homelessness, and major social class issues.
U.S. Poverty and Economic Inequality. There have been many dysfunctions result from social structures throughout the course of history. The negative consequences begin from the conflict between different factions within society based upon social class, race, and gender. Individuals with a conflict perspective reflect how supremacy and intimidation together hold society. ( LEON-GUERRERO 14).
