In this society, social class plays an extensive role. It can determine who one associates with, what type of education one has, and predominately, how successful one is in the world. Parents try to motivate their children to be his or her best in life, to change the social class that they grew up in. But can one legitimately change his or her social class? In the novel The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby was raised from nothing and worked to escape his circumstances by building a name for himself. Born “James Gatz,” he believed in chasing the American Dream and that he could work rigorously to pull himself out of the lower class community. While some people believe that changing one's social status is feasible, one just sincerely cannot. Throughout the novel, the main character, Nick Carraway, finds himself being associated with the upper class of his town because of his relationships with his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, and Jay Gatsby. However, he, himself, is not wealthy in comparison to these people; he even described his home as “a weather-beaten cardboard bungalow at eighty a month” (Fitzgerald 3). If one was to earn “new money” or even just surround themselves with people of wealthiness, they would appear to belong to an upper class setting, but …show more content…
It is the same way in reality. Wealthier people tend to have different views on daily struggles. Lower-ranking social class members have more realistic problems. The Great Gatsby explains that Daisy Buchanan moved from place to place “unrestfully wherever people played polo and were rich together” (Fitzgerald 6). She appeared to be “bored” with her life because of the amount of wealth she obtained, while others labored into long hours of the night trying to make a living. Lower social class citizens have differing opinions and viewpoints. This would cause them to protrude among the
Wealth has formed an enormous gap in the society. As a country, the people are as separated as oil and water. “The wealthy class is becoming more wealthy; but the poorer class is becoming more dependent. Social contrasts are becoming sharper” (Doc A), to distinguish the poor from the rich has become extremely effortless.
The more money the wealth has the less middle class there is. The more people that influences the wealthy the higher the social equality will grow. Krugman says “A society with highly unequal results is more or less inevitably a society with highly unequal opportunity, too (592).” Middle class is being denied for all the help that there is, while the wealth is getting help. They are force to live this way because of inequality in the world.
Will problems exist if one is in higher class? In the real world, no matter who you are you will have problems as seen in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. In the book, for the both groups struggles and they could never avoid them. With The Outsiders and two other sources sources, “The Allure of Gangs”, and “A Generation Struggling: Rich Kids are Losing” the problems of the wealthy class, why people join gangs, and how do both groups act when there is no supervision on them. First, rich kids such as the Socs are supposed to be perfect, who have it all and do not have problems.
The “upper classes lack of integrity” is one of the prominent themes in the novel, which is about differences in the social classes, such as Upper Class vs Lower Class. The Great Gatsby shows the developing class rivalry between “old money” and “new money” just like Gatsby and Tom. Economic classes is called new money that is about upper class that has more money and more wealthy. Gatsby is in new money. Gatsby who represented everything.

Social classes represent the hidden structure of America, as well as in several other countries in the world. If one is unsatisfied with the social class they are born into, however, is it possible for them to change it? The answer is yes, they can, as per evidence from real life situations and from The Great Gatsby. Some might say that it is impossible to change the social class one is born into. In their opinion, if that person is born poor, consequently they will certainly die poor.
The United States was considered the land of opportunity for many generations, but the situation has now changed. America is no longer the country where all people can pursue their American Dream. The main reason why the lower class cannot achieve their goal of upward mobility is the fact that the top one percent of the population holds most of the wealth of the country. These wealthy Americans also have a better chance of increasing their wealth than the lower classes do. Wealth, or net worth, is not only made up of money; it also includes everything a person owns that is of value, such as their house and property.
The impact of socioeconomic status can be examined through a myriad of lenses. F. Scott Fitzgerald aims to show the relationship between socioeconomic status and power. Throughout The Great Gatsby, Tom’s character shows that socioeconomic status is equivalent to power within the novel. Tom puts great pride and emphasis on his socioeconomic status and wealth.
Since the beginning of human kind, people have wanted to break down the social barriers between each other. Some barriers started to fall away during the 20th century when women were given the right to vote and people were given the right to become rich based on their skill groups, not based on how their families were like. Although these social barriers started to fade away, defeating a social barrier completely was still a huge problem. The Great Gatsby by the author F. Scott Fitzgerald, offers a glance of the life in America during the 1920s. Jay Gatsby dreams about overcoming the class barriers and marrying Daisy.
Heidi De La Paz Professor Kaluzhski English 120 September 7, 2016 In the essay “ Show Me The Money”; Walter Mosley informs his readers about the uneven distribution of wealth in America and the discrimination that the working class has to face everyday. He states that it is wrong to look down on people and place judgment on them because of the amount of education and wealth they might have. Mosley goes on to tell us that we all deserve to live comfortable lives regardless of our social or economic class. In conclusion Mosley states that wealth should not define who we are and that we should all be treated equal that way we can all have equal opportunities to try to make it in this world.
Class status has to do with a series of different aspects that relate to the degree of luxury in terms of wealth and lifestyle. From a generic viewpoint, class refers to a wealth concept that characterizes your lifestyle, assets, and family income. Although there are three generic categories for assessing one’s level of wealth (lower, middle, and upper class), is it possible for there to be a significant fluctuation in amount of wealth over a long period of time that culminates to a change in lifestyle? This question is one of the central themes of a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald known as The Great Gatsby. Jay Gatsby is a key character in this book that attained a lot of wealth throughout their lives, but passed away by the completion of the story.
The wealthier one gets, it seems, the more one rationalizes their decisions and actions. The more one stains their morality little by little until they no longer need to choose what’s right and wrong but what benefits them. Whether it’s right or wrong is then irrelevant. From people to companies, wealth is the source of
In The Great Gatsby, social status is a significant element in the book as it separates the haves from the have nots. However more importantly, social status portrays the personalities of people belonging to different classes. In the end, you are stuck in the class you are born into, and attempting to change classes only leads to tragedy and heartbreak. In The Great Gatsby, there are three main social classes portrayed. These are old money, new money, and no money.
It was a term most knew as “old rich”. While the “new rich was a social class that is used as today. As Nick had stated “I am still a little afraid of missing something if I forget that, as my father snobbishly suggested, and I snobbishly repeat, a sense of the fundamental decencies is parceled out unequally at birth”(Fitzgerald 11). By Nick saying this he had meant that money isn't the only thing that some people are born to. Some people are naturally well with manners and more loyal and they have more sense of the fundamental morals.
