The ANA Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice include a list of standards. These standards are statements, which summarize what is expected from nurses in professional nursing practice. The standards form the foundation for decision-making and provide nurses with direction including which actions to take (Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2015). The ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements aids as the ethical structure in professional nursing and offers direction for the future. This theory provides a framework for understanding the different ways that nurses know and use their empirical, ethical, personal, and aesthetic knowledge in their practice. Carper suggests that incorporating these key components of knowing, combined with the science available, improves patient centered care and better outcomes. Empirical knowledge uses evidence based practice with current research and up to date scientific knowledge that the nurse continues to learn throughout practice. A nurse also applies the basic ethical principles to guide their patient care, such as respecting patient autonomy and ensuring non-maleficence while being treated medically for their health concerns. To provide holistic care, the nurse may also very cautiously apply personal knowledge from their own experience and value system to impact their practice, making sure to reflect on personal biases and keep their own feelings in check while ultimately respecting the patient’s wishes.

For this week’s journal assessment has asked to describe one of the ten General Competency Statement – on Values/Ethics in how I have met or will meet this competency during my practicum project this semester. This practicum project contains family education and training on proving care for a family member in a home setting, along with, the development of a train the trainer program, to ensure the high standard that has been established remain consistent throughout this program. In this discussion, I will be identifying the nine provisions of the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses. Furthermore, I will describe each provision in my own words. According to the American Nurses Association (2015), the Code of Ethics was established to be a guide for “carrying out nursing responsibilities in a manner consistent with quality in nursing care and the ethical obligations of the profession”. In my own words, I believe that the ANA Code of Ethics can be described as an ethical network of values and obligations that nurses must abide by to protect the public and produce the best quality care. In total, there are nine provisions found within the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses.

To me professionalism includes punctuality, looking the part, not being biased on one’s own beliefs and values, working in a team setting and putting the patients first, adhering to your workplaces’ policy and procedures, and knowing your job at hand and what is expected from you as a nurse. In the article, Perceptions of Professionalism Among Nursing Faculty and Nursing Students,” four different viewpoints of professionalism emerged and can be looked at from the view of humanists, the portrayers, facilitators and regulators (Akhtar, 2013)” According to the humanists professionalism is, “respect for human dignity, personal integrity, the right for patient’s to not have HIPPA violated, and the protection of patients from being harmed (Akhtar, 2013).” From the portrayers’ point of view, professionalism is evident from the overall appearance and attitude of an individual. Looking from the facilitators’ point of view of professionalism, one can believe that this should include; “standards and policies along with personal beliefs and values (Akhtar, 2013).”

This connects back to the learning outcome (4.1), “Demonstrates use of professional standards and the Code of Ethics to inform safe nursing care as applicable”. Using the code of ethics will help me provide competent, safe, compassionate care to clients. And my awareness and knowledge still need to develop to perform the ethical care I require to do in the long-term care

As a nurse, you have promised to give each of your patients the best care that can possibly be given. Nurses must follow a code of ethics, to act safely, provide ethical care no matter how they feel about the patient or the reason they are in your care. Following this code of ethics shows your commitment to caring for people and society, it is a guide of ethics and standards to follow to keep everyone safe. Nursing is also a wonderful opportunity to meet hundreds of people from almost every nationality and every walk of life.

Dr. Nancyruth Leibold listed thirty types of writing that nurses may encounter. The topic I have chosen is the development of the plan of care. A care plan is what is widely used in the medical field to create a program that is specified for that patient to follow and re-evaluate for its effectiveness. This provides a plan for the next course of action and allows other healthcare staff personnel overseeing the patient to follow the objective to get to the goal that is set. As a nurse, I have encountered many care plans for my residents/patients.

This portfolio represents the professional and academical achievements of my educational career in the course over the years. It is the compilation of the hard work I have completed and my accomplishments that illustrate my strengths, problem-solving ability, work ethic, responsibility and moral and professional values. All of the education obtained during these years and the effort put in has given me the required knowledge, experience, values, professional behaviors, and ethical standards to make me a stronger and well prepared professional nurse. It has been a long journey since I started my nursing education becoming a CNA, nurse assistant, then a practical nurse LPN. Continuing with my education I became a registered nurse (RN) and now I am finishing my Bachelors of Science in Nursing.

Providing care to a patient is a particularly challenging process that requires a great deal of effort from a nurse. A nurse’s ability to give quality care to their patient is an important aspect to a patient’s life both now and in the future. As such, nurses must exhibit specific qualities in their practice in order to maintain the best standard of care for their patients. Given this, I believe that the standards of knowledge, advocacy, and self-awareness are foundational to the nursing practice and to a nurse’s capacity to provide quality patient care. Knowledge

As a nurse, maintaining a sense of professionalism is of utmost importance in order to gain respect from our peers, leaders, and most importantly or clients. As I have gone out into the field during our clinical rotations, I have experienced many professional nurses and a few nurses I would consider unprofessional. So, I have decided to touch on a few key characteristics that I think make the mold of a professional nurse. As I searched for information regarding the professional nurse, I repeatedly saw these words throughout all the literature; autonomy, accountability, advocate, caregiver, and communicator. All of those aspects are pivotal in order to maintain a healthy, therapeutic relationship with our clients and to provide the greatest, holistic care possible while maintaining a sense of respect.
