My Virtual Life Program; What to Expect When Virtually Expecting Upon the completion of My Virtual Child, I have changed part of my opinions on how parenting can influence developmental outcomes, behaviors, and potentially the future of a child. My Virtual Child enabled me to truly understand on how basic parenting decisions truly have long-term effects on child and potentially their futures. When I say long-term effects I mean a wide variations; the most surprising one of a all is not always the “best” decision is always the “right” decision and making all the “right” choices doesn’t guarantee your child will be successful. Being a parent, even in a virtual one requires a lot of time physically, emotionally, and mentally. During the early months of my child, Ramona’s life included much health decision-making, as she had indigestion problems as well as constant colds, poor appetites and frequent irritability. Attachment theory states that either secure or insecure bonds may form between infant and mother in the first several months of the infant’s life for the purposes of safety and security. Throughout the course of the Virtual Child assignment I learned about how different parenting styles can affect children. I decided before raising my child that I wanted to mimic my parent’s style that they had used. I am an only child and my parents were strict and demanding, yet that taught me how to be determined and responsible. On January 25, 2016 at 8:34 AM I gave birth to my virtual child Amelia (Manis, 2008). My spouse and I chose the name Amelia based on the strong characteristics of Amelia Earhart.

One of the main theories in Developmental psychology is the attachment theory that was devised by Bowlby (1969) and was added to in 1973, by Mary Ainsworth. The attachment theory surrounds the bond between a primary care giver and a baby. They believe that attachment is a deep and enduring emotional bond that connects one person to another across time and space. In 1930 Bowlby worked as a psychiatrist in a children’s unit, where he treated many emotionally disturbed children, this lead him to consider the relationship between mother and child and the impact that could have on the child’s development. Bowlby believed that the attachment process was an all or nothing process and that you either were attached or were not attached.
The experiment was done in a room with a one way glass to observe the infant. Different situations were given to the infant to determine the infant’s attachment style, the mother of the infant would leave the room and the infant would be left with the experimenter or the experimenter would leave the room and leave the mother and infant alone. How the infant reacts to the situation is used to determine the attachment style of the infant. Infants with secure attachment style would be distressed every time the mother would leave, the infant avoids the stranger when the mother leaves and when the mother returns the infant becomes happier. Infants with ambivalent attachment attachment style get distressed whenever the mother leaves, and avoids the stranger when left alone.
Overview of Attachment Theory Attachment theory tries to describe the evolution of personality and behaviour in relationships and it gives a reason for the difference in a person’s emotional and relationship attitudes. In the beginning, it looked at the mechanics of relationships between children and their parents but it has since been expanded to cover the entire life of the human being (Howe, 2000). Attachment theory includes insights learned from evolutionary theory, ethology, systems theory and developmental psychology (Howe, 2001).

Infants are no longer regarded as passive and do not only respond to stimuli (Fantz, 1963).
